Nail polishes contain over a dozen chemical compounds, including chemicals that can cause adverse reproductive outcomes and pose a risk to the high proportion of nail salon workers who are women of childbearing age. Consumer demand has resulted in a shift toward more natural products, with manufacturers attempting to remove harmful ingredients (n-free products). Many products that claim to have eliminated toluene, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are labeled as "3-free"; however, studies have found these products often contain higher concentrations of toluene and DBP compared to produ

OBJECTIVE: Mask positive pressure ventilation (PPV) in the delivery room is routinely delivered with set peak inflation pressures. To aid mask PPV, stand-alone respiratory function monitors (RFMs) have been used in the delivery room, while ventilator-based, volume-targeted ventilation (VTV) is routinely used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
DESIGN: This is a prospective, randomised, crossover simulation study. Participants were briefly trained to use a neonatal ventilator for volume-targeted mask ventilation (VTV-PPV), then performed mask ventilation on a manikin in a randomised or

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic dental injury is the most common complication of conventional laryngoscopy during orotracheal intubation. The main cause is unintended pressure and leverage forces from the hard metal blade of the laryngoscope. The aim of this pilot study was to introduce and test a novel, reusable low-budget device not only providing contactless dental protection during direct laryngoscopy for endotracheal intubation, but also enabling, in contrast to established tooth protectors, active levering with conventional laryngoscopes for easier visualization of the glottis.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (P-OHCA) are infrequent, have low survival rates, and often have poor neurologic outcomes. Recent evidence indicates that high-performance emergency medical service (EMS) care can improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) guideline performance in the out of hospital setting and introduce an easy-to-use tool that scores guideline compliance and patient safety.
METHODS: We observed EMS teams responding to standardized pediatric resuscitation simulations. Teams were dispatched to a mock assisted livin

INTRODUCTION: Charging defibrillators prior to analyzing heart rhythms may decrease the no-flow time during rhythm check pauses while resuscitating in cardiac arrest. Although this anticipatory method is already used in some centers little is known about its safety. This study was carried out to confirm the safety and feasibility of the anticipatory method. It was hypothesized that this anticipatory method results in shorter total no-flow times, while other parameters of defibrillation efficacy including defibrillator safety and minimization of peri-shock pauses are unchanged.

BACKGROUND: The quality of prehospital care impacts patient outcomes. Military efforts have focused on training revision and the creation of high-fidelity simulation models to address potentially survivable injuries. We sought to investigate the applicability of models emphasizing hemorrhage control and airway management to a civilian population.
METHODS: Prehospital health care providers (PHPs) undergoing their annual training were enrolled. A trauma scenario was simulated with two modules: hemorrhage control and airway management. Experienced raters used a validated tool to assess performan

INTRODUCTION: Current ethical practice allows for adult patients with decision-making capacity to refuse blood transfusion, even at the cost of high morbidity or mortality. However, for an adult patient who is of the Jehovah's Witness faith, an unwanted blood transfusion confers a psychospiritual cost to the patient and a financial cost to health care entities. The ethical boundaries are increasingly ambiguous with minors who are members of the Jehovah's Witness faith. This simulation experience intends to identify and address knowledge gaps in the care of minors in an emergent setting using a

Active compression-decompression cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ACD-CPR) has been introduced to improve outcome of CPR after cardiac arrest. Usually, ACD-CPR is performed with the rescuer kneeling beside the patient (ACD-B), but ACD-CPR with the rescuer in standing position (ACD-S) has been taught and applied in some centres in addition to conventional ACD-CPR (ACD-B). The aim of this randomised and cross-over study was to evaluate the new technique of ACD-S and to compare it with conventional ACD-B. Twelve professional rescuers (aged 30.8 +/- 7.9 years) applied both methods of ACD-CPR on a ma

Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that requires effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to preserve life. Smartwatches equipped with accelerometer sensors and worn close to the wrist joint may offer an accessible way to provide CPR feedback. This study determined whether accelerometer data from a smartwatch could provide valid estimates of CPR parameters, including compression, decompression, frequency, and cycle time. Nineteen medical school students performed CPR on an instrumented mannequin while wearing a smartwatch. CPR parameters were derived from the smartwatch’s acce

INTRODUCTION: Advances in knowledge regarding mechanical ventilation (MV), in particular lung-protective ventilation strategies, have been shown to reduce mortality. However, the translation of these advances in knowledge into better therapeutic performance in real-life clinical settings continues to lag. High-fidelity simulation with a mannequin allows students to interact in lifelike situations; this may be a valuable addition to traditional didactic teaching. The purpose of this study is to compare computer-based and mannequin-based approaches for training residents on MV.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Whereas arthrodesis is the most common surgical intervention for the treatment of symptomatic cervical degenerative disc disease, arthroplasty has become increasingly more popular over the past decade. Although literature exists comparing the effects of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion and cervical total disc replacement (CTDR) on neck kinematics and loading, the vast majority of these studies apply only quasi-static, noninjurious loading conditions to a segment of the cervical spine.
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of arthrodesis

We assessed the effect of modifying standard Magill forceps on the laryngeal introduction of an Eschmann stylet during nasotracheal intubations with three indirect laryngoscopes (Airtraq™, C-MAC(®) or GlideScope(®)) in patients with predicted difficult intubation. We allocated 50 participants to each laryngoscope. The stylet was advanced by one forceps followed by the other (standard or modified), with each sequence allocated to 25/50 for each laryngoscope. There were no differences in rates of failed tracheal intubation with the allocated laryngoscopes: 6/50, 5/50 and 5/50, respectively. An E

OBJECTIVE: Although advanced restraint systems, such as seat belt pretensioners and load limiters, can provide improved occupant protection in crashes, such technologies are currently not utilized in military vehicles. The design and use of military vehicles presents unique challenges to occupant safety-including differences in compartment geometry and occupant clothing and gear-that make direct application of optimal civilian restraint systems to military vehicles inappropriate. For military vehicle environments, finite element (FE) modeling can be used to assess various configurations of res

Skull fractures are common injuries in young children, typically caused by accidental falls and child abuse. The paucity of detailed biomechanical data from real-world trauma in children has hampered development of biomechanical thresholds for skull fracture in infants. The objectives of this study were to identify biomechanical metrics to predict skull fracture, determine threshold values associated with fracture, and develop skull fracture risk curves for low-height falls in infants. To achieve these objectives, we utilized an integrated approach consisting of case evaluation, anthropomorphi

INTRODUCTION: Graduated compression stockings (GCS) are widely used to prevent venous thromboembolism; however, GCS are slippery and a fall hazard owing to the synthetic fibers. Therefore, we investigated whether changing the sole's shape decreased slipping.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We designed four GCS types with varying sole shapes and normal slipperiness to compare with normal GCS and a barefoot model without GCS (control). A mannequin foot with a GCS type or the control was placed on a ramp at 0°, and the angle was slowly increased. When the mannequin foot had moved ≥100% from the original
