Assessing cancer risk factors faced by an Ancestral Puebloan population in the North American Southwest.

Ancestral Puebloan people in the North American Southwest suffered high rates of disease, poor health, and early age-at-death. Four individuals with skeletal expressions of cancer were found in a pre-Columbian population in the Taos Valley - Reports of malignant neoplasms in the archaeological record are uncommon and their presence in four of 82 individuals is a high occurrence. This study continues Whitley and Boyer's (2012) research testing whether concentrations of ionizing radiation were sufficiently high to induce cancer and related health issues. Access to a preserved and partly reconstr

Osteochondritis Dissecans of skeletal elements of the foot in a 19th century rural farming community from The Netherlands.

Osteochondritis Dissecans (OD) is a pathological condition of the subchondral bone and surrounding cartilage of synovial joints, associated with strenuous activity and/or trauma. Reports of OD in archaeological skeletal remains are few and the majority demonstrate low OD prevalence (<1%). A predominantly 19th century skeletal sample from Middenbeemster, the Netherlands, was assessed for OD. The sample included adult individuals of both sexes. There were no definitive OD lesions in non-pedal elements, yet 12.9% of individuals suffered from pedal OD. Few archaeological and clinical reports speci

Scheuermann's disease in a juvenile male from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (3rd-4th century CE, Granada, Spain).

This study details a severe case of Scheuermann's disease (SD) in a well-preserved skeleton of a juvenile male (designated TOR302), dated to 3rd-4th century CE, from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (Granada, Spain). Individual TOR302 shows an evident kyphotic curve in the thoraco-lumbar spine, which is characterised by: (i) vertebral bodies of thoracic vertebra T2, thoracic segment T4-T9, and thoraco-lumbar segment T12-L2 wedged at >5°; (ii) slight anterior extensions of the epiphyseal ring; (iii) Schmorl's nodes on the superior and/or inferior plates; and (iv) a Cobb angle of 75°, der

Scurvy at the agricultural transition in the Atacama desert (ca 3600-3200 BP): nutritional stress at the maternal-foetal interface?

Studies of contemporary populations have demonstrated an association between decreased dietary diversity due to resource scarcity or underutilization and an increase in diseases related to poor micronutrient intake. With a reduction of dietary diversity, it is often the women and children in a population who are the first to suffer the effects of poor micronutrient status. Scurvy, a disease of prolonged vitamin C deficiency, is a micronutrient malnutrition disorder associated with resource scarcity, low dietary diversity, and/or dependence on high carbohydrate staple-foods. The aim of this pap

Insights on the paleoepidemiology of ancient tuberculosis from the structural analysis of postcranial remains from the Ligurian Neolithic (northwestern Italy).

The aim of this research is to gain insights on the progression timeline of osteoarticular tuberculosis (TB) in people from the Neolithic period by using skeletal traits that are independent of the bony lesions. The body proportions and postcranial mechanical strength of bones from two individuals from Liguria in northwestern Italy (Arene Candide 5, adolescent, and Arma dell'Aquila 1, adult), were compared with the rest of the Ligurian Neolithic skeletal series (45 individuals). If TB led to wasting of the skeleton and lack of normal function that endured for years, as often happens today, a c

Ectopic eruption of a lower permanent molar from the mediaeval necropolis of Alcáçova do Castelo, Mértola, Portugal.

The mediaeval necropolis of Alcáçova do Castelo is located in Mértola, Southern Portugal, and dates from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The archaeological campaigns started in 1978 and continue today, having yielded more than 759 graves. This report discusses an ectopic tooth eruption observed in skeleton 535, an adult female individual. A distal right permanent lower molar presents an ectopic eruption at the posterior margin of the coronoid process. On the opposite side, the first and second permanent molars are present, the left permanent lower third molar is absent and the mandibular ramus

Frequency and patterns of costovertebral osteoarthritis in two Medieval English populations.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequently identified lesions in palaeopathological research. It has been extensively studied by both bioarchaeologists and medical researchers for decades, yet the aetiology of osteoarthritis remains unclear. One of the most important aspects of osteoarthritic studies is identifying the distribution patterns of the condition throughout the skeleton. Despite many studies reporting the occurrence of postcranial osteoarthritis, including in the spine, the costovertebral articulations have received little focus. The current study describes the occurrence of costo

Suspected tuberculosis in an early 17th-century northern Finnish mummy-A computed tomography case study.

The custom of burying deceased members of the elite beneath church floors was common in 17th-18th-century Finland. This practice is responsible for the mummification of the remains of an early 17th-century vicar of Kemi parish, Nikolaus Rungius. Computed tomography performed on his remains revealed a possible tuberculous infection in his spine. The purpose of this paper is to further elaborate on findings in support of this diagnosis. Whether Vicar Rungius had tuberculosis is not only interesting considering his personal history, but also in terms of the history of tuberculosis in Northern Fin

A Neolithic case of fibrous dysplasia from Çatalhöyük (Turkey).

The vast majority of primary burials at Neolithic Çatalhöyük (Central Anatolia, Turkey, 7100-6000cal BC) are recovered from beneath house floors, with burials in external spaces extremely rare. Excavations at Çatalhöyük in 1998 brought to light a young adult male buried in a midden (a burial location observed so far for only 4 out of 440 individuals), showing a suite of pathological features affecting the entire skeleton. The observed pathological changes include perimortem and antemortem fractures, proliferative and resorptive areas, thinning of the bone cortex, and localized areas of disorga

Diagnosing a possible case of juvenile idiopathic arthritis: A palaeopathology study from the Ishkeenickh River Cave Site.

In the summer of 1967, a relatively complete skeleton of a juvenile was excavated from the Ishkeenickh River Cave Site (now the Ksi Hlginx River) in British Columbia, Canada, dating from approximately 2000 years ago. This individual, likely aged between 10 and 12 years at time of death, displays osteological features consistent with a chronic arthropathy. The most striking pathological changes are on the spine, with bony ankylosis present on several of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae. Lesions can also be observed on the ribs, the ilia, the femora, and a tibia. The arthritic conditions of j

Differential diagnosis of a probable case of non-adult thalassaemia from 4th century AD Romano-British Colchester, UK.

Our current understanding of immigration and diasporic disease in Roman Britain has been greatly enhanced by the recent identification of thalassaemia in the non-adult skeletal record. The wide phenotypic variation in the clinical expression of β-thalassaemia, however, means that additional cases may go unrecognised. A probable diagnosis for β-thalassaemia intermedia or a mild form of major in a 1.0-1.5year old skeleton from Butt Road, Colchester, dating to the 4th century AD is discussed here. The assessment was undertaken using macroscopic and radiographic analysis. Several conditions were a

Prevalence of chronic maxillary sinusitis in children from rural and urban skeletal populations in Poland.

Maxillary sinuses of 100 subadults from Cedynia, an early-urban site (stronghold), dated to the 10th-14th centuries AD, and of 28 subadults from Słaboszewo, a rural site, dated to the 14th-17th centuries AD, were examined for bone formation indicative of chronic sinusitis in order to explore the effect of urban and rural environments on the occurrence of upper respiratory tract infections in the past. We expected a higher prevalence of sinusitis in subadults from a stronghold than from a village, because of such factors as crowding, rapid spread of infections, and pollution from workshops loca

Differential diagnosis of a progressive neuromuscular disorder using bioarchaeological and biogeochemical evidence from a bronze age skeleton in the UAE.

Bioarchaeologists frequently rely on differential diagnoses to examine pathological conditions in ancient human skeletons. However, this method is often hindered by the skeleton's limited response abilities, resulting in similar skeletal expressions across multiple diseases. These diseases can be placed into perspective by using stable isotope analysis to explore the life course of an individual. In the current study, strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotope values from the dental enamel of a young (18-20 year old) paraplegic female interred within the Bronze Age Tomb of Tell Abraq are used to ex

'Til Poison Phosphorous Brought them Death': A potentially occupationally-related disease in a post-medieval skeleton from north-east England.

This paper describes the pathological changes observed on the skeleton of a c.12-14 year old person buried in a north-east England Quaker cemetery dated to AD 1711-1857. Bone formation (woven and lamellar) and destruction are present mainly on the mandible, clavicles, sternum and scapulae, long bones of the right arm, left ribs, spine, ilia, and the femora and tibiae. Differential diagnoses of tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases, smallpox, actinomycosis, neoplastic disease, and "phossy jaw" are considered. While the pathological changes could represent all previously described diseases a

An unusual exostotic lesion of the maxillary sinus from Roman Lincoln.

This report provides a differential diagnosis of an exostotic bony lesion within the left maxillary sinus of a Romano-British (3rd to 4th century AD) adult male from Newport, Lincoln. Macroscopic, radiographic, and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analyses suggest that the lesion is likely of odontogenic origin. The overall size of the lesion and areas of sclerosis and radiolucency, together with its hypothesised odontogenic origin, suggest that the lesion represents a chronic exostotic osteomyelitic reaction to the presence of odontogenic bacteria. While modern case studies of odontogenic

Prosthetics in antiquity-An early medieval wearer of a foot prosthesis (6th century AD) from Hemmaberg/Austria.

Even though the earliest prosthetic devices date to the Ancient Egyptian Empire and iconographic sources attest their use in the Greco-Roman world, archaeological evidence for this practice prior to 2nd millennium AD is very scant. In 2013, a skeleton dating to the Frankish period (6th century AD) was excavated at the Hemmaberg in southern Austria. The middle adult male was missing his left foot from above the ankle. In its place, an iron-ring and wooden remains were recovered and interpreted as a prosthesis replacing the lost foot. This represents one of the oldest examples of prosthetic limb

Spinal hyperostosis and ankylosis in a Gallo-Roman horse from Iwuy 'Val-de-Calvigny' (Nord, France): 'Ankylosing spondylarthritis' (spondylarthritis ankylopoetica), 'deforming spondylarthrosis' (spondylarthrosis deformans) or 'DISH' (hyperostosis vertebralis ankylopoetica)? An archeozoological and comparative nosological review.

A Gallo-roman horse from the ancient site of Iwuy ("Val-de-Calvigny", Nord, France) showed extensive lesions of severe vertebral ankylosing hyperostosis reliable to "ankylosing spondylarthritis/-osis" and "deforming spondylarthrosis". Discussing the case gives the opportunity to a comparative and critical review of spinal hyperostosing and ankylosing diseases in horse and man.

Characterization of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy in an identified skeleton from Évora, Portugal, using combined and comparative morphology and microscopy.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is a bone pathology that can be associated with a number of focal or systemic diseases, particularly those affecting the respiratory system. HOA is characterized by proliferative periostosis of the long bones, especially in their distal and periarticular regions. This report presents a probable case of HOA in the skeleton of an elderly Portuguese male from Évora, Portugal, who died in 1970. The skeleton was evaluated by morphological, radiological, and histological methods. We found bilateral periosteal proliferation of the tubular bones, remodeling of the p

A severe case of congenital aural atresia in pre-Columbian Venezuela.

A severe case of unilateral congenital aural atresia was observed in an adult male from the pre-Columbian archaeological site of Los Tamarindos in Venezuela. Macroscopic analysis of the right temporal showed a complete absence of an external auditory meatus. Further examination of the cranium using a micro-CT scanner revealed a fusion of the incus and malleus on the affected side. Modern clinical data suggest this would have resulted in hearing loss on the affected side and was likely accompanied by visible malformations of the external ear. The placement of antlers besides the head of this in
