Dose reconstruction supports the interpretation of decreased abundance of mammals in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

We re-analyzed field data concerning potential effects of ionizing radiation on the abundance of mammals collected in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) to interpret these findings from current knowledge of radiological dose-response relationships, here mammal response in terms of abundance. In line with recent work at Fukushima, and exploiting a census conducted in February 2009 in the CEZ, we reconstructed the radiological dose for 12 species of mammals observed at 161 sites. We used this new information rather than the measured ambient dose rate (from 0.0146 to 225 µGy h-1) to statistically

Revealing trophic transmission pathways of marine tapeworms.

Parasites are important components of natural systems, and among their various roles, parasites strongly influence the flow of energy between and within food webs. Over 1000 tapeworm species are known to parasitise elasmobranchs, although full life cycles are resolved for fewer than 10 of them. The lack in resolution stems from the inability to distinguish larval from adult stages using morphology alone. Molecular elucidation of trophic transmission pathways is the next step in understanding the role of hosts and parasites within food webs. We investigated the parasite assemblage of New Zealan

Low Predictability of Colour Polymorphism in Introduced Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) Populations in Panama.

Colour polymorphism is a recurrent feature of natural populations, and its maintenance has been studied in a range of taxa in their native ranges. However, less is known about whether (and how) colour polymorphism is maintained when populations are removed from their native environments, as in the case of introduced species. We here address this issue by analyzing variation in colour patterns in recently-discovered introduced populations of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) in Panama. Specifically, we use classic colour analysis to estimate variation in the number and the relative area of differ

Reduced transmission of human schistosomiasis after restoration of a native river prawn that preys on the snail intermediate host.

Eliminating human parasitic disease often requires interrupting complex transmission pathways. Even when drugs to treat people are available, disease control can be difficult if the parasite can persist in nonhuman hosts. Here, we show that restoration of a natural predator of a parasite's intermediate hosts may enhance drug-based schistosomiasis control. Our study site was the Senegal River Basin, where villagers suffered a massive outbreak and persistent epidemic after the 1986 completion of the Diama Dam. The dam blocked the annual migration of native river prawns (Macrobrachium vollenhoven

Toxoplasmosis seroprevalence in wild small rodents, potentially preys of ocelots in north-eastern Mexico.

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in rodents that coexist with ocelots in north-eastern Mexico. Eighty rodents of five genera were captured and their serum samples tested for specific IgG antibodies to T. gondii by in-house indirect ELISA using three different conjugates. Prevalences of 7% (3/44) and 33% (4/12) were found in Sigmodon hispidus and Liomys irroratus, respectively, and were significantly different. All Baiomys taylori and Oligoryzomys fulvescens were negative for the presence of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies. The samples from Peromys

Insights into the ecology and evolutionary success of crocodilians revealed through bite-force and tooth-pressure experimentation.

BACKGROUND: Crocodilians have dominated predatory niches at the water-land interface for over 85 million years. Like their ancestors, living species show substantial variation in their jaw proportions, dental form and body size. These differences are often assumed to reflect anatomical specialization related to feeding and niche occupation, but quantified data are scant. How these factors relate to biomechanical performance during feeding and their relevance to crocodilian evolutionary success are not known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured adult bite forces and tooth pressures in

Implications of increased susceptibility to predation for managing the sylvatic cycle of Echinococcus multilocularis.

The ability to increase the chances that infectious prey are taken by predators is an observed feature of many parasites that rely on one or more predator-prey relationships to complete their life-cycle. In the sylvatic life-cycle of Echinococcus multilocularis - the causative agent of human alveolar echinococcosis-- foxes are the final host, with voles acting as intermediate hosts. Here we review the evidence that E. multilocularis causes increased susceptibility to predation and present a general mathematical model for the sylvatic life-cycle. The ability to increase susceptibility to predat

Influence of stationary and moving textured backgrounds on the response of visual neurons in toads (Bufo bufo L.).

Previous studies have shown that configurational prey recognition in common toads is performed by feature-analyzing functional units consisting of assemblies of connected neurons such as retinal (classes R2, R3), tectal [classes T5(1), T5(2), T5(3)], and pretectal (class TH3) cells. In the present paper, effects of textured backgrounds on the response of these neurons to a configurational moving stimulus have been tested quantitatively. (1) In all investigated neurons, neither the overall activation nor the respective stimulus-response relationships were significantly influenced by a stationar

Climate change and overfishing increase neurotoxicant in marine predators.

More than three billion people rely on seafood for nutrition. However, fish are the predominant source of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxic substance. In the United States, 82% of population-wide exposure to MeHg is from the consumption of marine seafood and almost 40% is from fresh and canned tuna alone1. Around 80% of the inorganic mercury (Hg) that is emitted to the atmosphere from natural and human sources is deposited in the ocean2, where some is converted by microorganisms to MeHg. In predatory fish, environmental MeHg concentrations are amplified by a million t

Effects of juvenile exposure to predator odor on adolescent and adult anxiety and pain nociception.

Clinical researchers have tracked patients with early life trauma and noted generalized anxiety disorder, unipolar depression, and risk-taking behaviors developing in late adolescence and into early adulthood. Animal models provide an opportunity to investigate the neural and developmental processes that underlie the relationship between early stress and later abnormal behavior. The present model used repeated exposure to 2,3,5-trimethyl-3-thiazoline (TMT), a component of fox feces, as an unconditioned fear-eliciting stimulus in order to induce stress in juvenile rats aged postnatal day (PND)

Archaeology and age of a new hominin from Flores in eastern Indonesia.

Excavations at Liang Bua, a large limestone cave on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, have yielded evidence for a population of tiny hominins, sufficiently distinct anatomically to be assigned to a new species, Homo floresiensis. The finds comprise the cranial and some post-cranial remains of one individual, as well as a premolar from another individual in older deposits. Here we describe their context, implications and the remaining archaeological uncertainties. Dating by radiocarbon (14C), luminescence, uranium-series and electron spin resonance (ESR) methods indicates that H. flore

A novel mathematical model of bone remodelling cycles for trabecular bone at the cellular level.

After an initial phase of growth and development, bone undergoes a continuous cycle of repair, renewal and optimisation by a process called remodelling. This paper describes a novel mathematical model of the trabecular bone remodelling cycle. It is essentially formulated to simulate a remodelling event at a fixed position in the bone, integrating bone removal by osteoclasts and formation by osteoblasts. The model is developed to construct the variation in bone thickness at a particular point during the remodelling event, derived from standard bone histomorphometric analyses. The novelties of t

Phenotypic integration in a series of trophic traits: tracing the evolution of myrmecophagy in spiders (Araneae).

Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the evolution of prey specificity (stenophagy). Yet little light has so far been shed on the process of evolution of stenophagy in carnivorous predators. We performed a detailed analysis of a variety of trophic adaptations in one species. Our aim was to determine whether a specific form of stenophagy, myrmecophagy, has evolved from euryphagy via parallel changes in several traits from pre-existing characters. For that purpose, we studied the trophic niche and morphological, behavioural, venomic and physiological adaptations in a euryphagous s

Changes in mercury bioaccumulation in an apex predator in response to removal of an introduced competitor.

We evaluated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in native apex predators, lake trout Salvelinus namaycush before and after the large-scale removal of introduced predators, smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu in a 270 ha Adirondack lake. Previous studies show that removing competitors can result in increased growth and decreased mercury concentrations in remaining fish. Instead, we observed a significant increase in lake trout MeHg concentrations despite observed increases in lake trout growth. Bioenergetics simulations predicted similar increases in lake trout MeHg concentrations. Higher MeH

Decreased predator avoidance in parasitized mice: neuromodulatory correlates.

Although parasites are reported to alter host responses to predators, little is known about the neurochemical mechanisms involved. Using an odour preference test, we examined the effects of an acute, subclinical infection with the naturally occurring, single host, enteric protozoan parasite, Eimeria vermiformis, on the responses of male laboratory mice, Mus musculus, to a predator. Uninfected mice avoided the odour of a predatory cat, spending a minimal amount of time in a Y-maze in the vicinity of the cat odour. In contrast, mice infected with E. vermiformis, spent a significantly greater amo

Evidence that long-lasting potentiation of amygdala efferents in the right hemisphere underlies pharmacological stressor (FG-7142) induced lasting increases in anxiety-like behaviour: role of GABA tone in initiation of brain and behavioural changes.

The hypothesis that long-lasting potentiation (LLP) in amygdala efferents to the periacqueductal gray (PAG) of the right hemisphere mediates initiation of lasting increases in defensive response to rats induced by FG-7142 was supported in this study. GABA transmission was potentiated with Vigabatrin (gamma vinyl GABA, GVG), a suicide inhibitor of GABA transaminase. It was predicted that increasing GABA transmission would interfere with LLP and behavioural changes. The hypothesis was confirmed, for the most part. GVG given 1 day prior to FG-7142 prevented increased defensive response to rats as

Secondary metabolites help biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 to escape protozoan grazing.

In soil ecosystems, bacteria must cope with predation activity, which is attributed mainly to protists. The development of antipredation strategies may help bacteria maintain higher populations and persist longer in the soil. We analyzed the interaction between the root-colonizing and biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 and three different protist isolates (an amoeba, a flagellate, and a ciliate). CHA0 produces a set of antibiotics, HCN, and an exoprotease. We observed that protists cannot grow on CHA0 but can multiply on isogenic regulatory mutants that do not produce the extracell

Molecular Adaptations for Sensing and Securing Prey and Insight into Amniote Genome Diversity from the Garter Snake Genome.

Colubridae represents the most phenotypically diverse and speciose family of snakes, yet no well-assembled and annotated genome exists for this lineage. Here, we report and analyze the genome of the garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis, a colubrid snake that is an important model species for research in evolutionary biology, physiology, genomics, behavior, and the evolution of toxin resistance. Using the garter snake genome, we show how snakes have evolved numerous adaptations for sensing and securing prey, and identify features of snake genome structure that provide insight into the evolution of

Structure, innervation and response properties of integumentary sensory organs in crocodilians.

Integumentary sensory organs (ISOs) are densely distributed on the jaws of crocodilians and on body scales of members of the families Crocodilidae and Gavialidae. We examined the distribution, anatomy, innervation and response properties of ISOs on the face and body of crocodilians and documented related behaviors for an alligatorid (Alligator mississippiensis) and a crocodylid (Crocodylus niloticus). Each of the ISOs (roughly 4000 in A. mississippiensis and 9000 in C. niloticus) was innervated by networks of afferents supplying multiple different mechanoreceptors. Electrophysiological recordi

Evolution of color variation in dragon lizards: quantitative tests of the role of crypsis and local adaptation.

Many animal species display striking color differences with respect to geographic location, sex, and body region. Traditional adaptive explanations for such complex patterns invoke an interaction between selection for conspicuous signals and natural selection for crypsis. Although there is now a substantial body of evidence supporting the role of sexual selection for signaling functions, quantitative studies of crypsis remain comparatively rare. Here, we combine objective measures of coloration with information on predator visual sensitivities to study the role of crypsis in the evolution of c
