The Influence of Gender and Age on the Acoustic Voice Quality Index and Dysphonia Severity Index: A Normative Study.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) are commonly used in research and clinical practice to quantify voice quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of gender and age on AVQI and again on DSI. METHODS: In total, 123 vocally healthy adults (68 females, 55 males, and age ranging between 20 and 79 years) were evaluated. RESULTS: Gender had no effects on AVQI and DSI (both P values > 0.05). Additionally, AVQI showed no significant correlation with age (P > 0.05, r2 = 0.008). However, DSI had a statistically significant c

Effects of age and hearing loss on the relationship between discrimination of stochastic frequency modulation and speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability. DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

Inheritance patterns of noise vulnerability and "protectability" in (C57BL/6J × CBA/J) F1 hybrid mice.

BACKGROUND: Interindividual variation in cochlear vulnerability to noise and ototoxins must in part reflect allelic variation in genes that largely remain unknown. Work in our laboratory has shown that young adult CBA/J mice are more vulnerable to cochlear noise injury than are similar-aged mice of other well-studied strains such as C57BL/6J (B6). Conversely, young CBA/J mice are dramatically protected against noise exposure by low-dose kanamycin (KM) treatment, while B6 mice are not. Genetic differences that distinguish these two strains may include genes that help establish the early "sensit

What about the "actor's formant" in actresses' voices?

Spectrographic analysis of male actors' voices showed a cluster, the "actor's formant" (AF), which is related to the perception of good and projected voice quality. To date, similar phenomena have not been described in the voices of actresses. Therefore, the objective of the current investigation was to compare actresses' and nonactresses' voices through acoustic analysis to verify the existence of the "AF" cluster or the strategies used to produce the performing voice. Thirty actresses and 30 nonactresses volunteered as subjects in the present study. All subjects read a 40-second text at both

Word-recognition performance in interrupted noise by young listeners with normal hearing and older listeners with hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: The most common complaint of adults with hearing loss is understanding speech in noise. One class of masker that may be particularly useful in the assessment of speech-in-noise abilities is interrupted noise. Interrupted noise usually is a continuous noise that has been multiplied by a square wave that produces alternating intervals of noise and silence. Wilson and Carhart found that spondaic word thresholds for listeners with normal hearing were 28 dB lower in an interrupted noise than in a continuous noise, whereas listeners with hearing loss experienced only an 11 dB difference.

Variations of NICU sound by location and time of day.

PURPOSE/AIMS: The primary aim of this study was to identify time periods of sound levels >45 decibels (dB) in a large Level III NICU. The second aim was to determine whether there were differences in decibel levels across the five bays of the NICU, the four quadrants within each bay, and two 12-hour shifts. DESIGN: A repeated measures design was used. Bay, quadrant, and shift were randomly selected for sampling. Staff and visitors were blinded to the location of the sound meter, which was placed in one of five identical wooden boxes and was preset to record for 12 hours. SAMPLE: Sound levels

Cepstral analysis of voice in persons with vocal nodules.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional measures of dysphonia were reported to be unreliable, and the measurements of cepstral peak prominence (CPP) have been shown to correlate well with perceptions of breathiness. Hence, the present study was hypothesized that there would be abnormal reduction of the cepstral peak in the speakers with vocal nodules relative to the normal controls as they are characterized by hoarse and breathy voice due to inadequate closure of vocal folds. METHOD: Phonation of sustained vowel /a/ was subjected to acoustic analysis using Computerized Speech Lab (CSL model 4150) software. T

Analysis of Measured and Simulated Supraglottal Acoustic Waves.

To date, although much attention has been paid to the estimation and modeling of the voice source (ie, the glottal airflow volume velocity), the measurement and characterization of the supraglottal pressure wave have been much less studied. Some previous results have unveiled that the supraglottal pressure wave has some spectral resonances similar to those of the voice pressure wave. This makes the supraglottal wave partially intelligible. Although the explanation for such effect seems to be clearly related to the reflected pressure wave traveling upstream along the vocal tract, the influence

[Acoustic- and EGG-parametrisations of Phonatory Quality Provide Voice Profiles of Normal Speakers].

OBJECTIVE: The present study deals with the dimensions of normal phonation. It is generally accepted that there exists a wide range of normal voices. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using complementarily orientated electroglottografic and acoustic parametrisations of phonation quality, sustained vowel productions of 267 male and 267 female speakers without any reported voice pathology were analysed. A clustering technique serves to differentiate gender specific subgroups of normal phonation on the basis of these analysis results. RESULTS: Firstly, 3 subgroups within each gender on the basis of the EGG

Exploring the relationship between spectral and cepstral measures of voice and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI).

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the strength of relationship between impairment-level acoustic measures derived from spectral- and cepstral-based analyses (including the cepstral peak prominence [CPP]; ratios of low vs high frequency spectral energy; and the respective standard deviations [SDs] for these measures) and a disablement measure (the total Voice Handicap Index [VHI] score) in a large and diverse group of voice-disordered and control subjects. The relationship between total VHI and the Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSID-a multivariate estimate of dysphoni

Effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on cochlear tuning measured using stimulus frequency and distortion product OAEs.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether a change in cochlear tuning, measured using OAEs, could be detected due to contralateral activation of the efferent system using broadband noise. DESIGN: Cochlear tuning measures based on SFOAE phase gradients and SFOAE-2TS 'Q' were used to test this hypothesis. SFOAE magnitude and phase gradient were measured using a pure-tone sweep from 1248 to 2496 Hz at 50 dB SPL. 2TS curves of SFOAE were recorded with a suppressor frequency swept from 1120 to 2080 Hz at 50 dB SPL. DPOAE f2-sweep phase gradient was also obtained to allow comparisons with the literature. All thr

Over-injection of autologous fat in the vocal fold: how to remove the excess?

Chordal injection of autologous fat is useful in treating incomplete closure of the glottis on phonation, because it is simple, uses an intraoral approach and is mostly effective. However, when excess fat is injected, the removal of the excess is generally much more difficult than the injection. A 48-year-old man underwent intrachordal injections of autologous fat twice bilaterally for vocal fold atrophy. He came to our hospital because his hoarseness became worse after every operation. Three-dimensional computed tomography revealed that a large amount of fat was injected in the bilateral subg

Laryngeal mechanisms during human 4-kHz vocalization studied with CT, videostroboscopy, and color Doppler imaging.

The objective of this study was to investigate the underlying laryngeal mechanisms during the specific human 4-kHz vocalization. The laryngeal configuration during this vocalization was measured using high-resolution computerized tomographic scan and videostrobolaryngoscopy. The color Doppler imaging (CDI) of medical ultrasound was used to detect the vibrations of glottal and supraglottal mucosa. During the 4-kHz vocalization, the ventricular folds were adducted in the shape of a bimodal chink and the vocal folds were shaped as a "V" with an opening at the posterior glottis. In the coronal vie

Voice outcomes after transoral laser microsurgery for early glottic cancer-considering signal type and smoothed cepstral peak prominence.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESES: This study proposed the use of signal typing and acoustic measures experimentally validated for aperiodic voices to investigate voice outcomes after transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for early glottic carcinoma. It was of interest whether signal type and pitch-tracking indicators would reveal unreliable perturbation and noise measures. As an alternative, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) was used for the first time in this population. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive study of patients treated with TLM for early glottic carcinoma. METHODS: All participants (n=14) per
