OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: An estimation of burden of serious fungal diseases in France is essential data to inform public health priorities on the importance of resources and research needed on these infections. In France, precise data are available for invasive fungal diseases but estimates for several other diseases such as chronic and immunoallergic diseases are by contrast less known.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using the Web of Science Platform. Published epidemiology papers reporting fungal infection rates from France were identified. Where no data

OBJECTIVE: Jamaica is one of the largest countries in the Caribbean with a population of 2 706 500. Prevalence of human immunodificency virus (HIV) in Jamaica is high, while that of tuberculosis (TB) is recorded to be low. In this study, we have estimated the burden of serious fungal infections and some other mycoses in Jamaica.
METHODS: All published papers reporting on rates of fungal infections in Jamaica and the Caribbean were identified through extensive search of the literature. We also extracted data from published papers on epidemiology and from the World Health Organization (WHO) TB

Although anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) agents are commonly used to treat psoriasis and other inflammatory diseases in adults and children, numerous reports have documented new-onset or flaring psoriasis in adults treated for the other conditions. Individual case reports have documented similar observations in three children. We report a series of anti-TNF-α-induced psoriasis in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease treated at a large children's hospital. All five patients presented with severe scalp involvement. One child was treated with adalimum

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous tumefaction with presence of grains or granules. Etiological agents include bacteria or filamentous fungi. Mycetoma due to dermatophytes is uncommon, mainly occurring in Africa. To our knowledge, no case has been reported in the West Indies. Only two observations of Micosporum canis mycetoma in humans have been reported in the literature. We report a third case of mycetoma of the scalp caused by this fungus.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old woman from Martinique, French West Indies, presented with an indolent tumefaction of the scalp evolving over five

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton quinckeanum is a zoophilic dermatophyte causing mouse favus, that was only sporadically detected in Germany for decades. Since 2014, an increasing number of isolates have been found in central Germany, giving rise to dermatophyte skin infections and skin appendix infections like tinea capitis or even kerion Celsi.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to characterize the specific features of dermatophyte infections due to T. quinckeanum.
METHODS: We collected the data of 550 isolates of T. quinckeanum from Germany between March 2014 and December 2024 in the laborato

INTRODUCTION: Invasive and superficial fungal infections are increasingly reported in Algeria, testifying to the increase in their frequency in parallel with the increase in risk factors and the availability of diagnostic means, at least in university hospitals (CHU). The latter, located in the major northern cities, are equipped with high-performance diagnostic tools compared to hospitals in the interior of the country.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of published and grey literature was undertaken. Prevalence and incidence of discrete fungal diseases were estimated using a deterministic mod

The epidemiology of fungal infections in Eritrea is unknown. Most cases are under-reported due to a lack of diagnostics. This study estimates the burden of serious fungal infections and highlights treatment and diagnostic gaps in the country. All publications related to fungal infections were identified by searches using PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar. Where no data were available, data from neighbouring countries, then sub-Saharan African countries, then other parts of the world were considered for deriving estimates. The Eritrea population was 3,546,427 in 2020. In 2020, HIV/AIDS patients

Mali is a developing country facing several health challenges with a high rate of tuberculosis (TB) and a moderate HIV infection burden. Little is known or done about fungal diseases, yet they represent a significant public health problem in certain populations. The aim of this study was to estimate the national burden of fungal disease, and summarize data, diagnostic and treatment gaps. We used national demographics and PubMed searches to retrieve articles on published data on these infections and at-risk populations (pulmonary TB, HIV/AIDS patients, patients receiving critical care etc.) in

Despite efforts to address the burden of fungal infections in Malawi, the prevalence and incidence remain largely unknown. We assessed the annual burden in the general population and among populations at high risk and fungal infection frequencies in each particular population to estimate the national incidence or prevalence. The Malawi population is approximately 17.7 million (2017), with 48% under 15 years of age. Approximately 8% of the population is HIV positive. The most common infections are present in HIV/AIDS patients, with oral candidiasis being the commonest. Life threatening infectio

BACKGROUND: Dermoscopy is a noninvasive technique allowing rapid magnified in vivo observation of the skin and structures that lie beneath the skin surface. Various congenital and acquired hair shaft abnormalities may also be evaluated by dermoscopy. Additionally, characteristic features of Microsporum canis-induced tinea capitis and trichotillomania in humans have been reported.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the dermoscopic findings observed in cats with patchy alopecia due to M. canis infection and in cats with self-inflicted hair loss.
ANIMALS: Twenty-four client-owned cats presented at a veter

Data on the association between smoking and meningioma are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to assess the role of smoking in radiation- and non-radiation-related meningiomas. The study was designed as a 4-group case-control study, balanced for irradiation, including 160 irradiated meningioma case patients, 145 irradiated control subjects, 82 nonirradiated case patients, and 135 nonirradiated control subjects. The sources of these groups included a cohort of individuals who underwent radiotherapy (mean dose, 1.5 Gy to the brain) during childhood for treatment of tinea capitis, claims fil

While the association between exposure to ionizing radiation and cancer is well established, its association with schizophrenia is unclear. The aim of our study was to assess risk of schizophrenia after childhood exposure to ionizing radiation to the head (mean dose: 1.5 Gy). The study population included an exposed group of 10,834 individuals irradiated during childhood for treatment of tinea capitis in the 1950s and two unexposed comparison groups of 5392 siblings and 10,834 subjects derived from the National Population Registry individually matched to the exposed group by age, sex (when pos

BACKGROUND: Although central scalp hair loss is a common problem in African American women, data on etiology or incidence are limited.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the frequency of various patterns and degree of central scalp hair loss in African American women and to correlate this with information on hair care practices, family history of hair loss, and medical history.
METHODS: Five hundred twenty-nine subjects at six different workshops held at four different sites in the central and/or southeast United States participated in this study. The subjects' patterns and degree of central

INTRODUCTION: The majority of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have established primary skin manifestations or associated clinical feature. Skin NTDs often result in physical impairment and disfigurement, which can lead to disability. Skin diseases have been proposed as an entry point for integrated NTDs control. However, the magnitude and overlap of skin NTDs is poorly understood.
METHODOLOGY: An institution-based cross-sectional study was done using medical records of dermatology patients between July 2017 and June 2018 in a dermatology service in Northeast Ethiopia. A total of 661 patien

Dermatophytoses are common superficial fungal infections, most frequently caused by Trichophyton species. Among them, Trichophyton tonsurans is increasingly recognized as an important cause of tinea capitis and other dermatophytic infections. We conducted a retrospective review spanning three- years and six months (January 2022 - June 2025) in the Parasitology-Mycology Laboratory of La Rabta University Hospital (Tunis, Tunisia). The study included patients with dermatophytosis confirmed to be caused by Trichophyton tonsurans. Clinical samples (skin, scalp, nails) were examined by direct micros

Kerion celsi is a severe inflammatory form of tinea capitis that is uncommon in adults and may mimic bacterial furunculosis, abscess, or cellulitis, resulting in delayed diagnosis and antibiotic-only treatment. We report a 48-year-old woman with a one-month history of a painful, purulent, crusted lesion on the left temporal and retroauricular scalp, localized alopecia, and ipsilateral periorbital edema. She reported close exposure to 10 cats daily and did not improve after treatment for presumed furunculosis. Potassium hydroxide examination demonstrated fungal elements. Fungal culture and lact
