Survivors of childhood sexual abuse: implications for perinatal nursing care.

Childhood sexual abuse has a lifelong impact on its survivors and may affect the childbearing experience in a variety of ways. Nurses caring for women during the perinatal period can benefit from understanding the phenomenon of child sexual abuse, its prevalence, and the sequelae experienced by childbearing women. Signs, symptoms, and correlates of prior sexual abuse manifested during the perinatal period are described, and nursing care responses are suggested. Nurses may be able to use this information to recognize survivors and facilitate both a positive childbirth experience and the healing

Self-reported health in HIV-positive African American women: the role of family stress and depressive symptoms.

This prospective study examined the association between stressful life events and self-reported health in 72 inner-city, low-income African American women with HIV. Depressive symptoms were examined as a potential mediator of this association. Findings indicated that family stressors predicted deterioration in self-reported health status over the 15-month assessment period. Additionally, the association between family stress and self-reported physical health was mediated by depressive symptoms such that the strength of the association between family stress and self-reported health was no longe

HIV antiretroviral therapy and prevention use in US blood donors: a new blood safety concern.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) to treat and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection are effective tools to help end the HIV epidemic. However, their use could affect HIV transfusion-transmission risk. Three different ART/PrEP prevalence analyses in blood donors were conducted. First, blood samples from HIV-positive and a comparison group of infection-nonreactive donors were tested under blind using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for ART. Second, blood donor samples from infection-nonreactive, 18- to 45-year-old, male, first-time blood donors in 6 US locations wer

An Exploratory Study of Stigma and Discrimination among People Living with HIV/ AIDS in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Nigeria.

This study examined the magnitude of HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using both qualitative and quantitative methods to survey 100 PLWHA resident in AMAC-FCT. Participants were selected through a combination of two- stage and systematic random sampling technique using a table of random numbers. Alternative facts and morcellation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Since the recent black-box warning regarding the use of electromechanical morcellation, there has been a hesitancy to utilize the product and even to perform other types of morcellation by gynecologists. Unfortunately, this Food and Drug Administration action and the continued public criticisms of this procedure are grounded in poor data and faulty reasoning. To truly perform informed consent to patients considering procedures involving morcellation, a thorough review of the facts, not alternative facts, must be communicated. RECENT FINDINGS: Misrepresentation of the ethics

Patients' experiences of being informed about having an abdominal aortic aneurysm - a follow-up case study five years after screening.

The aim of this study was to describe patients' experiences 5 years after being informed about having an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), at screening, in a subgroup of patients who suffered a decrease in quality of life (QoL) 12 months after screening. Of 6 patients with a decreased QoL 12 months after AAA screening, one had died, one declined to participate and one suffered cognitive problems and was therefore excluded. The remaining 3 patients (all men, aged 79-80 years) were interviewed in their homes. The interviews were analysed using thematic content analysis. The result shows that the

Genetic testing in endocrinology: lessons learned from experience with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2).

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) is a syndrome characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), unilateral or bilateral pheochromocytoma and hyperparathyroidism. Familial MTC (FMTC) is a subvariant of MEN2 in which affected individuals develop MTC without other manifestations of MEN2. The identification of RET proto-oncogene mutations in MEN2 and FMTC have provided a precise method for identifying gene carriers. This review provides a concise discussion of the use of genetic testing in the management of hereditary MTC, discussing the appropriate use of this new technology with an

Are we making progress? Not in haematology!

It will be shown, through the presentation of recent research findings, that haematology is a neglected area in terms of sensitive care of the dying. The Australian evidence indicates that scant progress has been made in relation to even the most basic palliative care practices such as sensitive, honest information giving or appropriate referral to the palliative system. Rather, the data show that during terminal trajectory, patients from these diagnostic groups and their families remain trapped in processes within the high-tech, curative system that are not responsive to the needs of the dyin

Understanding the Influence of Culture on End-of-Life, Palliative, and Hospice Care: A Narrative Review.

Cultural beliefs and values significantly shape end-of-life care decisions, including palliative and hospice care approaches. These cultural influences affect how patients and families view death, pain management, and medical decision-making. This narrative review examines how cultural factors impact care delivery for patients with terminal diagnoses, with particular attention to improving patient-provider communication and trust across diverse populations. A search of the current literature was conducted from March 1, 2022, to May 1, 2022, through the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirec

Medical Oncology Professionals' Perceptions of Telehealth Video Visits.

IMPORTANCE: Telehealth has emerged as a means of improving access and reducing cost for medical oncology care; however, use by specialists prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic still remained low. Medical oncology professionals' perceptions of telehealth for cancer care are largely unknown, but are critical to telehealth utilization and expansion efforts. OBJECTIVE: To identify medical oncology health professionals' perceptions of the barriers to and benefits of telehealth video visits. Influence of the home environment on the prevention of mother to child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune-deficiency syndrome in South Africa.

The human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is still a 'family crises' which marks the beginning of the deterioration of the family unit and the trauma in the emotional, psychological and material lives of both the mother and child. In South African context where the majority of HIV-positive mothers are young single women who live in extended families, disclosure to the sexual partner alone is not an adequate condition for the success of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT). In South Africa, close to one in three women who attend antenatal
