[Human infection due to Bertiella sp (cestode: Anoplocephalidae) in a man originating from Yemen in Algeria].

Bertiella is a frequent parasite in animals, particularly in nonhuman primates. The infestation occurs in man by accidental ingestion of the intermediate host, an acarus containing the cysticercoid larva of Bertiella studeri or Bertiella mucronata. The diagnosis is based on the morphology of the gravid proglottis and eggs with pyriform embryo which is characteristic of the Anoplocephalinae. Human infection is asymptomatic or can induce minor non specific digestive disturbances and the niclosamide is effective in one single dose. The authors report the first case of human bertiellosis in Algeri

[Dipylidium caninum infection in an infant].

Dipylidium caninum, the dog tapeworm, is a common intestinal cestode of domestic dogs and cats, but few cases have been reported of human infection by this parasite in Japan. We repot a case of D. caninum infection in a 17 month-old girl, who sometimes had symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dysphoria at night. Her mother noted the appearance of small white worms in her stool, and she was seen by a local pediatrician. Despite antiparasitic therapy wiht pyrantel pamoate, the problem persisted and was eventually referred for further workup to Kurume University Hospital. The diagnosis was m

A new method for selective diagnostic staining of hooks of echinococci, cysticerci and tapeworms in histological sections.

This paper describes a new method for selective staining of hooks of echinococci, cysticerci and tapeworms in histological sections. The method is based on pre-staining in hematoxylin, then the preparations are stained overnight in dilute polychrome blue and differentiated with tartrazine in Cellosolve (Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether or Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether). The hooks stain blue, nuclei brown to brown-green, and cell plasma is yellow. The hooks stain very brightly, which enables the identification of parasite remnants in granulomas and scars. The intensity of staining depends on

Significance of the distribution of 57Co-vitamin B12 in Spirometra mansonoides (Cestoidea) during growth and differentiation in mammalian intermediate and definitive hosts.

The distribution of labeled cyanocobalamin (CN-[57Co]Cbl = [57Co]-vitamin B12) in pleurocercoids and adult tapeworms of Spirometra mansonoides was studied during development in mice 22 days days PI, respectively. Plerocercoid scolices, obtained by cutting away their bodies or by in vitro enzymatic dissolution of the bodies, were pulsed with CN- magnitude of 57Co Cbl for 1h at 37 degrees C and reimplanted subcutaneously into mice or given per os to cats. In regenerated plerocercoids, the highest concentration of magnitude of 57Co Cbl occurred in the scolex and then decreased posteriorly in the

Studies on chemotherapy of parasitic helminths (VI) effects of various neuropharmacological agents on the motility of Dipylidium caninum.

Effects of various neuropharmacological agents on the motility of Dipylidium caninum was studied. 5-HT stimulated the motility of D. caninum, while other drugs such as GABA, adrenaline, phenylephrine, isoproterenol, dibenamine, and propranolol showed little effect. The stimulatory action of 5-HT was antagonized by tryptophol. Stibnal caused paralysis which was blocked by the pretreatment with 5-HT. Paralytic effects were caused by eserine, dichlorovos, ACh, carbachol and DMPP, but not by pilocarpine and McN-A-343. d-Tubocurarine, hexamethonium, and atropine all showed little effect on the moti

A World of Viruses Nested within Parasites: Unraveling Viral Diversity within Parasitic Flatworms (Platyhelminthes).

Because parasites have an inextricable relationship with their host, they have the potential to serve as viral reservoirs or facilitate virus host shifts. And yet, little is known about viruses infecting parasitic hosts except for blood-feeding arthropods that are well-known vectors of zoonotic viruses. Herein, we uncovered viruses of flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes, group Neodermata) that specialize in parasitizing vertebrates and their ancestral free-living relatives. We discovered 115 novel viral sequences, including 1 in Macrostomorpha, 5 in Polycladida, 44 in Tricladida, 1 in Monogenea,

Orders out of chaos--molecular phylogenetics reveals the complexity of shark and stingray tapeworm relationships.

Novel molecular data are presented to resolve the long-standing issue of the non-monophyly of the elasmobranch-hosted tapeworm order Tetraphyllidea relative to the other acetabulate eucestode orders. Bayesian inference analyses of various combinations of full ssrDNA, and full or partial lsrDNA (D1-D3), sequence data, which included 134 species representing 97 genera across the 15 eucestode orders, were conducted. New ssrDNA data were generated for 82 species, partial lsrDNA data for 53 species, and full lsrDNA data for 29 species. The monophyly of each of the elasmobranch-hosted orders Catheto

Distinct evolutionary lineages of Schistocephalus parasites infecting co-occurring sculpin and stickleback fishes in Alaska.

Sculpins (coastrange and slimy) and sticklebacks (ninespine and threespine) are widely distributed fishes cohabiting 2 south-central Alaskan lakes (Aleknagik and Iliamna), and all these species are parasitized by cryptic diphyllobothriidean cestodes in the genus Schistocephalus. The goal of this investigation was to test for host-specific parasitic relationships between sculpins and sticklebacks based upon morphological traits (segment counts) and sequence variation across the NADH1 gene. A total of 446 plerocercoids was examined. Large, significant differences in mean segment counts were foun

Comparison of diagnostic methods for laboratory diagnosis of the zoonotic tapeworm Dipylidium caninum in cats.

The tapeworm Dipylidium caninum is the most widely distributed cestode infecting dogs, cats, and sometimes humans, worldwide. The diagnosis of the infection caused by D. caninum is achieved via the visualization of proglottids in feces or with traditional microscopic tests, but both lack sensitivity. The present study has evaluated and compared the diagnostic performance of a PCR protocol on different feline biological samples to detect D. caninum. A sample of feces, a Scotch tape test from the perianal area, and a rectal swab were collected from a total of 100 privately owned cats from Italy

Conspecific migration and environmental setting determine parasite infracommunities of non-migratory individual fish.

Parasite infracommunities tend to be stochastic in nature, although environmental characteristics such as the type of water source in streams and host traits can have an effect on the biotic assemblages and by extension the parasite fauna. We examined the effect of water source and the rate of adult fish migration on the metazoan parasite infracommunities of conspecific juvenile brown trout, Salmo trutta L. among streams flowing into Lake Lucerne (Switzerland). Juvenile (1 to 2-year old) fish harboured higher parasite species richness in groundwater-fed than in surface water-fed streams, where

Estimating effective population size for a cestode parasite infecting three-spined sticklebacks.

Remarkably few attempts have been made to estimate contemporary effective population size (Ne) for parasitic species, despite the valuable perspectives it can offer on the tempo and pace of parasite evolution as well as coevolutionary dynamics of host-parasite interactions. In this study, we utilized multi-locus microsatellite data to derive single-sample and temporal estimates of contemporary Ne for a cestode parasite (Schistocephalus solidus) as well as three-spined stickleback hosts (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in lakes across Alaska. Consistent with prior studies, both approaches recovered sma

Alternative prey use affects helminth parasite infections in grey wolves.

Predators affect prey populations not only through direct predation, but also by acting as definitive hosts for their parasites and completing parasite life cycles. Understanding the affects of parasitism on prey population dynamics requires knowing how their predators' parasite community is affected by diet and prey availability. Ungulates, such as moose (Alces americanus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), are often important prey for wolves (Canis lupus), but wolves also consume a variety of alternative prey, including beaver (Castor canadensis) and snowshoe hare (Lepus america

Competition and Facilitation between a Disease and a Predator in a Stunted Prey Population.

The role of diseases and parasites has received relatively little attention in modelling ecological dynamics despite mounting evidence of their importance in structuring communities. In contrast to predators, parasites do not necessarily kill their host but instead they may change host life history. Here, we study the impact of a parasite that selectively infects juvenile prey individuals and prevents them from maturing into adults. The model is inspired by the Ligula intestinalis tape worm and its cyprinid fish host Rutilis rutilis. We demonstrate that the parasite can promote as well as demo

A Rare Cause of Diarrhea in a Kidney Transplant Recipient: Dipylidium caninum.

We report the first case of dipylidiasis in a kidney transplant recipient. Watery diarrhea due to Dipylidium caninum was observed in a male patient who had been undergone kidney transplantation 2 years before. The patient was successfully treated with niclosamide. D. caninum should be considered as an agent of diarrhea in transplant patients.

The protection afforded by the outer layer to procercoids of Schistocephalus solidus during passage through the stomach lumen of their vertebrate host (Gasterosteus aculeatus).

Intestinal cestodes with complex life cycles have to pass through the acid stomach lumen of their vertebrate host(s) in order to reach their preferred site of development. The cestode's tegument is the only organ in constant contact with this hostile environment. Procercoids of Schistocephalus solidus (order Diphyllobothriidea) lose their outer layer on passing through the acidic stomach of their second intermediate host (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We wanted to investigate if the outer layer is an adaptation that enables passage through this hostile environment. We used fish bile to force the pr
