UNLABELLED: Although the appendix is the most commonly resected and examined intra-abdominal organ, the pathogenesis and etiology of acute nonspecific appendicitis remain enigmatic. This retrospective study aimed to assess the prevalence of parasitic infection in surgically removed appendices and to evaluate the probable associations between the presence of parasites and the occurrence of appendicitis through parasitological and histopathological examinations of the appendectomy specimens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out from April 2016 to March 2021 among all

Intestinal parasitic infections could play an important role in the progression of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), by further disturbing the immune system whilst it is already engaged in the fight against HIV. HIV and intestinal parasitic infections were investigated in 1239, randomly selected individuals, aged 15-54 years, living on a sugar estate in central Ethiopia. Intestinal parasites were identified in faecal samples (one/subject) using direct, concentration, and (for Strongyloides stercoralis larvae) Baermann methods. HIV serological status was determined using ELISA,

Health education has been shown to be effective in slowing the spread of the disease, infectious disease in particular. To evaluate the impact of health education on the prevalence and pattern of new infection of enterobiasis, children from 6 kindergartens in Ulsan city, South Korea, were recruited after undergoing a screening for enterobiasis, and then divided into three groups, including group medication (GM), education (Edu), and control group. All children in GM group received medical treatment with 500 mg albendazole twice, with 15 days interval. In the Edu group, only children diagnosed

The present study examines the most common home remedies in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy currently used in the treatment of pediatric enterobiasis, commonly known as pinworm infection. The remedies in question, typically based on popular beliefs and as such are nearly useless, were noted through interviews with subjects who had come to the local Hygiene and Public Health Services offices for information about pinworm prevention and treatment. Analysis of replies by the subjects clearly indicates that local families are ill-prepared to recognize the symptoms this parasitic infection;

In recent years, numerous veterinary practitioners have reported anecdotal episodes in which anthelmintic treatment did not appear to deliver the expected efficacy against equine pinworms (Oxyuris equi). Anthelmintic resistance has not been demonstrated formally in equine pinworms, so a clinical study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of paste formulations of pyrantel pamoate or ivermectin against naturally acquired infections with O. equi. Twenty-one horses (>4 months to 15 years of age) with patent, naturally acquired pinworm infections were blocked by source of origin and allocated rand

We report a 20-year-old man who presented with abdominal discomfort for 2 months. Colonoscopy showed skip areas with ulceration, resembling Crohn's disease. Biopsies showed chronic inflammation and a non-necrotizing granuloma. An adult pinworm was found in the lumen from an uninvolved segment. The patient responded to mebendazole.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remain a major public health concern in low-income settings where sanitation and hygiene are inadequate. Schoolchildren are among the most vulnerable groups, yet limited data exist on the prevalence and determinants of IPIs in Afghanistan. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IPIs and identify associated factors among schoolchildren in Jalalabad city.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between May and October 2023 among 603 students aged 6-15 years from eight randomly selected schools in Jalalabad. Stool samples were exami

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and rapid diagnosis is crucial for the effective treatment of parasitosis. Traditional etiological methods, especially microscopic examination, are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to false or missed detections. In response to these challenges, this study explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for the detection and classification of human parasite eggs through the YOLOv4 deep learning object detection algorithm.
METHODS: Eggs from species such as Ascaris lumbricoides (A. lumbricoides), Trichuris trichiura (T. trichiura), Enterobius vermicularis (E. v
