Bacterial Isolates Associated with Mortality Events in Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) Restocking Farms in Spain: A Descriptive Field Study.

This study aimed to identify bacterial isolates associated with mortality events in Salmo trutta rearing farms in Spain and to assess their antibiotic resistance profiles. The analysis covered five fish farms: two with a recent history of antibiotic use and three without any antibiotic application in the six months prior to sampling. Tissue samples were collected from moribund fish displaying clinical signs such as erratic swimming, ocular hemorrhages, fin hemorrhages, and skin lesions during disease outbreaks in 2022 and 2023. The samples were analyzed using real-time PCR, amplification and s

Characterization and Comparison of Microbiota in the Gastrointestinal Tracts of the Goat (Capra hircus) During Preweaning Development.

Bacterial communities in gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) play an important role in animal health and performance. Despite its importance, little information is available on the establishment of microbial populations in the goat GIT or on changes occurring during early development. Therefore, this study investigated the bacterial community dynamics of the rumen, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon in 15 goats at five developmental stages (0, 14, 28, 42, and 56 days old) by using 16S rDNA sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR technology. 940 genera were found to belong to 44 phyla distr

Probiotic bacteria affect the composition of salivary pellicle and streptococcal adhesion in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: The use of probiotic bacteria is increasing worldwide and at least some of them can transiently colonize the oral cavity. Several studies have shown that probiotic bacteria, which are often thought of in relation only to intestinal health, can also affect the oral ecology, but the mechanisms for this are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro if the probiotic bacteria used in commercial products affect the protein composition of the salivary pellicle and the adherence of other oral bacteria. METHODS: Salivary pellicle on hydroxyapatite and the adhesio

Biodegradation mechanisms of p-nitrophenol and microflora dynamics in fluidized bed bioreactors.

p-Nitrophenol (PNP), a member of the nitroaromatic family, is widely used in the production of pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum products. As a toxic compound, PNP is highly resistance to degradation, posing a significant challenge in agricultural and industrial wastewater treatment. Conventional PNP wastewater treatment methods require complex operational conditions that incur high chemical and equipment costs, and potential secondary pollution. Therefore, this study developed an anoxic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBBR) and an anaerobic-aerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AAFBBR)

Intestinal microbiome: a new target for chalaziosis treatment in children?

Intestinal dysbiosis (changes in the gut commensal microbiome) is related to several ophthalmic diseases. The aim of this study was to verify whether oral specific probiotics can alter the clinical course of chalaziosis and its recurrence. A prospective comparative pilot study involving 26 children suffering from chalaziosis was conducted. Children were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received medical treatment (lid hygiene, warm compression and dexamethasone/tobramycin ointment for at least 20 days), and the second group received medical treatment plus a daily supplementatio

Response of Gut Microbiota to Dietary Fiber and Metabolic Interaction With SCFAs in Piglets.

Dietary fiber (DF) is increasingly thought to regulate diversity of piglet gut microbiota to alleviate weaning stress in piglets. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of DF on growth performance of piglets and composition of their gut microbiota, as well as the interaction between gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in piglets. A total of 840 piglets were allocated to three dietary treatments consisting of a control group (CG), an alfalfa meal group (AG), and a commodity concentrated fiber group (OG) in a 30-day feeding trial. Gut mucosa and feces samples were use

Hearing loss in a mouse model of 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) arises from an interstitial chromosomal microdeletion encompassing at least 30 genes. This disorder is one of the most significant known cytogenetic risk factors for schizophrenia, and can also cause heart abnormalities, cognitive deficits, hearing difficulties, and a variety of other medical problems. The Df1/+ hemizygous knockout mouse, a model for human 22q11DS, recapitulates many of the deficits observed in the human syndrome including heart defects, impaired memory, and abnormal auditory sensorimotor gating. Here we show that Df1/+ mice, like human 22q1

A Single Cysteine Residue in the Translocation Pathway of the Mitosomal ADP/ATP Carrier from Cryptosporidium parvum Confers a Broad Nucleotide Specificity.

Cryptosporidiumparvum is a clinically important eukaryotic parasite that causes the disease cryptosporidiosis, which manifests with gastroenteritis-like symptoms. The protist has mitosomes, which are organelles of mitochondrial origin that have only been partially characterized. The genome encodes a highly reduced set of transport proteins of the SLC25 mitochondrial carrier family of unknown function. Here, we have studied the transport properties of one member of the C. parvum carrier family, demonstrating that it resembles the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier of eukaryotes. However, this carrie

Role of surface protein SasG in biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus.

The SasG surface protein of Staphylococcus aureus has been shown to promote the formation of biofilm. SasG comprises an N-terminal A domain and repeated B domains. Here we demonstrate that SasG is involved in the accumulation phase of biofilm, a process that requires a physiological concentration of Zn(2+). The B domains, but not the A domain, are required. Purified recombinant B domain protein can form dimers in vitro in a Zn(2+)-dependent fashion. Furthermore, the protein can bind to cells that have B domains anchored to their surface and block biofilm formation. The full-length SasG protein

Longitudinal Microbiome and Metabolome Shifts After Successful Intervention in Impending Stunting in Indonesian Infants.

Background/Objectives: Stunting and weight faltering (WF) remain pressing public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, with long-term consequences for child growth, development, and survival. While the role of gut health in early growth is increasingly recognized, evidence on how the gut microbiome and metabolome respond to nutritional interventions in WF infants is scarce. This study explored gut microbiome and metabolome changes in Indonesian infants aged 6-12 months who overcame WF following a one-month intervention. Methods: Infants were assigned to either a Nutritional Ad

Bioengineering of LAB vector expressing Haemolysin co-regulated protein (Hcp): a strategic approach to control gut colonization of Campylobacter jejuni in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) is accountable for more than 400 million cases of gastroenteritis each year and is listed as a high-priority gut pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although the acute infection of C. jejuni (campylobacteriosis) is commonly treated with macrolides and fluoroquinolones, the emergence of antibiotic resistance among C. jejuni warrants the need for an alternative approach to control campylobacteriosis in humans. To this end, vaccines remain a safe, effective, and widely accepted strategy for controlling emerging and re-emerging infectious d

Postbiotics derived from recombinant lactic acid bacteria exhibit high IL6-binding capacity and suppress IL6-induced STAT3 signaling.

INTRODUCTION: With growing evidence of clinical efficacy of probiotics in various diseases, safety concerns have arisen regarding the therapeutic use of live probiotic bacteria, especially in critically ill, immunocompromised, and pediatric populations. Serious probiotic-related adverse effects have been reported in these patients, including bloodstream infection and sepsis. This has led to an increased interest in developing postbiotics (non-viable bacterial products) that may exert beneficial effects on the host without the risks associated with administration of live microorganisms. The aim

The impact of perinatal maternal stress on the maternal and infant gut and human milk microbiomes: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal maternal stress, which includes both psychological and physiological stress experienced by healthy women during pregnancy and the postpartum period, is becoming increasingly prevalent. Infant early exposure to adverse environments such as perinatal stress has been shown to increase the long-term risk to metabolic, immunologic and neurobehavioral disorders. Evidence suggests that the human microbiome facilitates the transmission of maternal factors to infants via the vaginal, gut, and human milk microbiomes. The colonization of aberrant microorganisms in the mother's micro

Antifungal activity of nisin against clinical isolates of azole-resistant Candida tropicalis.

The rapid emergence of invasive infections caused by azole-resistant Candida tropicalis has become a public health concern, and there is an urgent need for alternative treatment strategies. Studies have demonstrated the antibacterial effects of nisin, a well-known peptide naturally produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis. However, there is scant information about the antifungal effect of nisin against C. tropicalis. The present study aims to investigate the in vitro antifungal activity of nisin against clinical isolates of azole-resistant C. tropicalis strains, as well as its inhibitory e

Dynamic microbial and metabolic changes during Apulian Caciocavallo cheesemaking and ripening produced according to a standardized protocol.

The microbiota of a cheese play a critical role in influencing its sensory and physicochemical properties. In this study, traditional Apulian Caciocavallo cheeses coming from 4 different dairies in the same area and produced following standardized procedures were examined, as well as the different bulk milks and natural whey starter (NWS) cultures used. Moreover, considering the cheese wheels as the blocks of Caciocavallo cheeses as whole, these were characterized at different layers (i.e., core, under-rind, and rind) of the block using a multi-omics approach. In addition to physical-chemical

Antibiotic Resistance-Susceptibility Profiles of Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus spp. From the Human Vagina, and Genome Analysis of the Genetic Basis of Intrinsic and Acquired Resistances.

The spread of antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern worldwide. Commensal bacteria from the human genitourinary tract can act as reservoirs of resistance genes playing a role in their transfer to pathogens. In this study, the minimum inhibitory concentration of 16 antibiotics to 15 isolates from the human vagina, identified as Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus anginosus, and Streptococcus salivarius, was determined. Eight isolates were considered resistant to tetracycline, five to clindamycin and quinupristin-dalfopristin, and four to rifampicin. To investigate the presence

Effects of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, a phenolic acid compound from Yucca schidigera extract, on immune function and intestinal health in meat pigeons.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4-HPAA), a phenolic acid compound from Yucca schidigera extract, in Caco-2 cells and artificial rearing of pigeons. In vitro experiments showed that 4-HPAA at different levels exhibited higher cell viability than shikimic acid and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and with the highest viability observed at 600 μM. Additionally, 600 μM 4-HPAA alleviated LPS-induced upregulation of IL-1β and CASPASE1 expressions (P < 0.05). In vivo results demonstrated that supplemental 4-HPAA at 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg levels did not affect the
