Randomised controlled trial testing the feasibility of an exercise and nutrition intervention for patients with ovarian cancer during and after first-line chemotherapy (BENITA-study).

OBJECTIVES: Advanced ovarian cancer is a severe disease with major side effects caused by peritoneal carcinomatosis, ascites and gastrointestinal involvement as well as exhaustive treatment like debulking surgery and combination chemotherapy. Two most frequently reported side effects are muscle wasting and malnutrition, leading to frailty, decreased health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and cancer-related fatigue (CRF). As muscle wasting and malnutrition often commence during first-line chemotherapy and develop progressively into a refractory state, an early intervention is warranted. This pi

Study protocol: cost-effectiveness of multidisciplinary nutritional support for undernutrition in older adults in nursing home and home-care: cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults in nursing home and home-care are a particularly high-risk population for weight loss or poor nutrition. One negative consequence of undernutrition is increased health care costs. Several potentially modifiable nutritional risk factors increase the likelihood of weight loss or poor nutrition. Hence a structured and multidisciplinary approach, focusing on the nutritional risk factors and involving e.g. dieticians, occupational therapists, and physiotherapist, may be necessary to achieve benefits. Up till now a few studies have been done evaluating the cost-effectiveness

Numbers and Features of Patients With a Diagnosis of Celiac Disease Without Duodenal Biopsy, Based on a National Survey.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: According to guidelines, individuals with symptoms of celiac disease should undergo duodenal biopsy analysis to establish a diagnosis, but little is known about physician adherence to these guidelines. We used a patient-powered research network (PPRN) to compare demographics, diagnoses, symptoms, and treatment between groups of patients with celiac disease diagnosed by biopsy analysis and patients with a diagnosis based on results of serology tests. METHODS: We analyzed data from iCureCeliac-a voluntary, PPRN hosted and distributed by the Celiac Disease Foundation, from Jan

[Problems in the energy and nutritional requirements of feeding and welfare of food producing animals].

The efforts in optimizing feeding conditions of food producing animals in the past were focussed primarily on promoting performance and/or the products' quality (MEYER 1997). In spite of great success in this direction various risks occur due to the conflict between the increased requirements on the one hand and the species typical demands on the other (for example: need of roughage as well as of concentrates with high energy and nutrient density in ruminants). Especially in feeding high yielding dairy cows the conflict is obvious: Even in the case, that high amounts of concentrates are fed it

Selenium deficiency in HIV infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

UNLABELLED: Selenium is required for activity of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, and selenium deficiency may be associated with myopathy, cardiomyopathy and immune dysfunction including oral candidiasis, impaired phagocytic function and decreased CD4 T-cells. We assessed selenium status in 12 patients with AIDS compared to normals and found significantly low plasma and red blood cell levels. Plasma selenium in AIDS was 0.043 +/- 0.01 microgram/ml vs 0.095 +/- 0.016 in controls (P < 0.001). Selenium status correlated with serum albumin (r = 0.77; P < 0.001) and 60% had documented GI malabsor

Impact of multi-disciplinary treatment strategy on systolic heart failure outcome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with reduced ejection fraction have high rates of mortality and readmission after hospitalization for heart failure. In Taiwan, heart failure disease management programs (HFDMPs) have proven effective for reducing readmissions for decompensated heart failure or other cardiovascular causes by up to 30%. However, the benefits of HFDMP in different populations of heart failure patients is unknown. METHOD: This observational cohort study compared mortality and readmission in heart failure patients who participated in an HFDMP (HFDMP group) and heart failure patients who recei

The role of prehabilitation in HNSCC patients treated with chemoradiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is used in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with excellent effectiveness, but it is burdened by important side effects, which may negatively impact patients' quality of life (QoL). In particular when associated with chemotherapy (CT), that has a radiosensitising effect (and its own toxicities), it is responsible for several adverse events, causing social discomfort and lower QoL, in patients who are already experiencing several tumor-related discomforts. Prehabilitation is a healthcare intervention consisting of several specialist visits prior to the

Association of a 'three meals and sleep routine' lifestyle intervention with weight and metabolic health in children with obesity: a prospective, single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment is the foundation of pediatric obesity care, but sustained adherence and weight-loss maintenance remain difficult. Regular meal and sleep timing may complement standard care, although pediatric interventional evidence is limited. This prospective, single-arm pilot study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in weight, body composition, and metabolic markers during a 'three meals and sleep routine' (TMSR) intervention. METHODS: This prospective, single-center, single-arm pilot study consecutively included 119 children with obesity
