Osteoarthritis is a common condition of the mandible. The treatment of osteoarthritis primarily consists of rest therapy (restricting jaw movements), the use of pharmaceuticals (analgesics, antiinflammatories), splint therapy, thermotherapy or mini-invasive therapy. Our study investigated the effectiveness of the various therapeutic options in the treatment of osteoarthritis. We compared the effectiveness of rest therapy (restricting mouth opening, analgesic therapy), splints, arthrocentesis of the upper joint space, and arthrocentesis in combination with splint therapy. We looked at 80 patien

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with orofacial pain with or without reduced jaw function, are frequent conditions in the general population. Different factors such as tooth clenching and grinding, sometimes due to enhanced psychosocial stress, and trauma to the jaws may be important as etiologic factors. Signs and symptoms of TMD are a common cause for general practitioners to use different intraoral appliances as pain and bite-force reducing devices and for improvement of a reduced jaw function. Intraoral appliances are often used parallel to other treatment modalities. Before treatment sta

Rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with atrophic ridges is a problem especially when compounded with a severe prognathic inter-arch relationship. It is difficult to rehabilitate these patients prosthetically without correction of the malrelation of the jaws. The established surgical techniques for correcting combined sagittal and vertical discrepancies of edentulous jaws are often prolonged and complex with attendant morbidity. This article presents a novel, simple method of correction of severe interarch sagittal discrepancy (more than 15 mm) by performing distraction osteogenesis at Le

Bartter's syndrome is an autosomal recessive form of severe volume depletion due to renal salt wasting. This clinical report describes the prosthodontic treatment for a 24-year-old man who suffers from Bartter's syndrome. The treatment plan included endodontic treatment of the maxillary anterior incisors and placement of cast dowel-and-core restorations because of reduced crown height. The patient's remaining teeth were restored with metal-ceramic crowns.

This study consisted of 355 patients referred to a surgical practice complaining of facial pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds, and limited jaw opening. In 247 patients, 360 TMJs were evaluated by arthrography. While 72.2% of them had internal derangement, the remaining 27.8% had normal arthrograms (NID). Among the patients with internal derangement, meniscal displacement with reduction (MDR) was the largest group (47.3%), followed by meniscal displacement without reduction (MD) (32.3%), meniscal displacement without reduction associated with perforation (MDP) (15.4%), and perforation w

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare the effects on objective occlusal function of 2 types of jaw exercises during oral appliance therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
METHODS: Sixteen consecutive subjects with snoring or OSA undergoing oral appliance therapy were included in this study; the results were based on 10 patients who completed it. The patients were randomized to start with either a jig exercise or stretching movements for 1 month; after 1 month without exercise, they crossed over to the other exercise for 1 month. An occlusal diagnostic system that

Data collected from standardized temporomandibular joint examination forms and treatment records of patients diagnosed as having Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome and treated using occlusal adjustment as the primary mode have been presented. A higher success rate was found in those patients: (1) with a chief complaint of pain confined to the area of one or both temporomandibular joints only, (2) whose answer to location of pain on initial examination was identified as confined solely to the region of one or both temporomandibular joints, (3) with muscle tenderness to palpation to one or bot

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used as a reference imaging modality for evaluating the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc-condyle relationship because it provides direct visualization of the articular disc in closed- and open-mouth positions. However, routine MRI primarily provides structural information at static mandibular positions and may not adequately reflect dynamic mandibular function. Consequently, discrepancies between imaging findings and clinical symptoms or treatment response may create diagnostic uncertainty in selected patients. Computerized axiography

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a particular type of temporomandibular joint disorder. Research findings comparing various treatment approaches are scarce and controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of ultrasound therapy, stabilization splint, TheraBite device, and masticatory muscle exercises in reducing pain intensity and improving mandibular mobility in patients with MPS.
METHODS: It was a single-blind, randomized, parallel-group, active-controlled trial that took place between April 2023 and October 2023 at the Department of Fixed Prosthodonti

Mandibular condyle is one of the most common sites of injury in the facial skeleton. But many condylar injuries remain undiagnosed. In rare situations, these injuries may result in serious adverse sequel in the patient's growth and development that are more difficult to treat at a later stage. In growing individuals, conservative management results in better functional outcome and good remodelling of the condyle. The aim of this article is to present a case report of a bilateral sub-condylar injury in a young child with a novel concept--an esthetic splint.

Summary Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a frequent finding in cases of facial trauma or dental malpractice, and legal claims for TMD damage have been increased over the years. Temporomandibular disorders assessment in the medical legal setting is complicated by the peculiarities of these disorders, whose symptoms are heterogeneous, fluctuant, and recognise a multifactorial origin. A systematic Medline search in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database pointed out that, despite the medical legal aspects of the dental profession are gaining a growing attention, there is a paucit

The orthodontic population has a high probability of internal joint and muscles of mastication disorders. In the past orthodontics has been performed with modest consideration of the jaw joints. Reasons why braces are not effective in the treatment of TM disorders are explained. Presently increased emphasis is given to the function and health of the TM joints. The aware orthodontist has an opportunity to address TM disorders and improve the quality of life for his or her patients by doing a few things differently before or concurrent with conventional orthodontics. Application of orthotic and

Mandibular advancement appliances (MAAs) are accepted as a treatment option for snoring and mild obstructive sleep disorders. In the present clinical study two differently designed devices were examined for their effectiveness in treating obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The study was based on an assessment of 26 patients with a polysomnographic diagnosis of mild OSA [22 men, four women; mean body mass index 27.3 kg/m2 (SD 3.1); mean age 56.8 years (SD 5.2); mean respiratory disturbance index (RDI): 16.0 events/hour (SD 4.4)]. After insertion of the first MAA and a 6-8-week habituation period,

This article describes a case in which distraction osteogenesis of the vertical ramus of the mandible was used for a young woman with hemifacial microsomia. Failure of distraction occurred because of the wrong vector of distraction. The floating bone technique was applied to the vertical ramus and was used to correct the malocclusion and to recover the height of the vertical ramus. Complete skeletal correction of the asymmetry was obtained, with excellent esthetic results. The case shows that the floating bone technique is a valid method to help the surgeon in the management of malocclusion af

BACKGROUND: Heat-cured acrylic has been the most commonly used material for construction of bite splints. Although effective, its processing involves several steps and is time consuming. Furthermore, acrylic splints distort easily if not kept in water when not worn for long periods of time. A newly developed light-cured composite material is now being used for bite splint fabrication. The composite material offers benefits in ease and speed of construction, has minimal warping and distortion, and has proven patient acceptance. The aim of this study was to determine if patient satisfaction with

Posterior disk displacement is a rare temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The main clinical sign is sudden molar open-bite (jaw locked in the open position). This may be accompanied by a sensation of intra-articular foreign body and more rarely joint pain. Joint sounds are unremarkable. Mouth opening may be slightly impaired. Hypothetically, like anterior disk displacements, posterior disk displacements can be classified as either reducible or nonreducible. A definitive diagnosis requires magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There is no consensus concerning treatment. A conservative course of
