OBJECTIVES: The permeability characteristics of dentin have been used in many in vitro studies to evaluate longitudinally the efficacy of various restorative and preventative procedures. The easiest way to evaluate dentin permeability is to calculate its hydraulic conductance (Lp) by fluid filtration method. There are researches on electronic hydraulic conductance measurement systems which can give more precise and reliable results of permeability of dentine than the classical system. To the authors' knowledge, there are no studies on bonding properties of restoratives to fluorotic primary tee

AIMS: Delayed eruption of teeth may be caused by the presence of one or more supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate findings, predisposing factors and differentiate different techniques used that affect the outcome following removal of supernumerary teeth. A comprehensive literature review was also undertaken.
METHODS: A longitudinal retrospective study was carried out at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital. A total of 120 patients were identified from the general anesthesia records that had supernumeraries extracted. Only 43 cases had delayed eruption of teeth cau

Dental malformations relating to bigeminism, fused teeth, etc., have a prevalence of 0.5-5%, depending on geographic, racial or genetic factors. This in turn may influence the treatment to be provided in each case. Anomalies in the shape, size and number of teeth are more common in the so-called pediatric genetic syndromes, many of which are associated to mental retardation. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion involving a central incisor and comprising different and individualized treatment plans due to the important differences in the characteristics of eac

BACKGROUND: Maxillary canines are the most frequently impacted teeth after the third molars, with an incidence of 0.9%-2.2% where females are 2-3 times more affected. The various causes include local, systemic, and genetic factors. To prevent complications, early prediction and age-appropriate intervention are crucial for initiating timely interceptive orthodontic treatment, thereby reducing treatment duration and cost.
AIM: To validate the modified Erickson's and Kuroll's method in predicting the prevalence of canine impaction in children aged 14-18 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children vi

ISSUE: General dentists are trained to identify and treat the most common oral conditions and their complications, including dental caries lesions, by restoring tooth structure and function and replacing missing teeth, as well as by treating gingival diseases. However, many senior undergraduate students and junior dentists believe they lack confidence to practice comprehensive clinical dentistry; they may avoid surgical endodontic procedures, orthodontic care, and implant-related cases, for example. The answer, they believe, lies in the imminent need to pursue a specialization to have a succes

BACKGROUND: Successful tooth autotransplantation (TAT) requires preservation of the periodontal ligament (PDL) on donor teeth and good vascularization of the recipient site to ensure maintenance of alveolar bone volume through physiological stimulation of PDL. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the survival and success rate of a two-step procedure that uses dual periodontal stimulation and a 3D replica of the transplanted tooth to promote ligament repair and prevent ankylosis and root resorption.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Angioedema is a nonpruritic swelling that typically affects the skin, mucous membranes of the face, and perioral soft tissues. It can be life-threatening, but it is usually not and can be treated conservatively unless the airway is compromised. This paper seeks to illuminate a rare case of hereditary angioedema (HAE) onset following dental procedures in a 9-year-old Indian boy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old male patient reported a chief complaint of spacing in the upper anterior region, which was diagnosed to be due to impacted supernumeraries. Two days after the oral sur

OBJECTIVES: Preventive orthodontic therapy with a band and loop is recommended to reduce the prevalence and severity of malocclusion on premature loss of a primary molar. However, when young patients are less cooperative and have a severe gag reflex, using traditional impression methods may be challenging. The use of a conventional metal space maintainer (SM) requires manual laboratory procedures and does not provide optimal esthetics. Moreover, gingival submergence of the wire and gingivitis caused by metal structures may occur. This clinical report describes a complete digital workflow for t

BACKGROUND: Maxillary frenectomy in children is a common procedure, but concerns about scar tissue affecting diastema closure prevent many clinicians from treating prior to orthodontics.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if maxillary frenectomy is safe and if diastema size is affected by early treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paediatric patients with hypertrophic maxillary frena were treated under local anaesthesia with diode laser and CO2 laser. Diastema width was compared by calibrating and digitally measuring initial and postoperative intraoral photographs.
RESULTS: In total, 109 patients were i

BACKGROUND: Although Le Fort type II, prosthesis detainment, and orthodontic treatment are considered for the management of midface retraction, they may be limited by their high cost, infection risk, and excessive amount of tooth movement. Therefore, the Point A-Koji method was devised as a novel treatment in patients with midface retraction.
METHODS: This is a case report of a 26-year-old woman who presented with a feeling of depressed midface and protrusion of the mouth. Preoperatively, the position of the lip and line connecting the nasal apex and mental muscles (E-line) were normal, but t

INTRODUCTION: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more sleep breathing problems and parafunctional oral habits than individuals without ADHD. However, there is scarce information on the correlation between their dental malocclusion and these functional disorders. The objective of this study was to assess the severity of malocclusion in patients with and without ADHD and to evaluate the correlation between their functional disorders and dental malocclusion.
METHODS: Eighty-eight patients aged 6-17 years were divided into 2 groups: ADHD (n = 44) and control (n = 4

BACKGROUND: STAT3 hyper-IgE syndrome (STAT3-HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency that clinically overlaps with atopic dermatitis. In addition to eczema, elevated serum-IgE, and recurrent infections, STAT3-HIES patients suffer from characteristic facies, midline defects, and retained primary teeth. To optimize dental management we assessed the development of dentition and the long-term outcomes of dental treatment in 13 molecularly defined STAT3-HIES patients using questionnaires, radiographs, and dental investigations.
RESULTS: Primary tooth eruption was unremarkable in all STAT3-HIES pat

OBJECTIVES: Pedicle location and recognition play important roles in spinal morphology analysis and orthodontic screw implantation, which can help doctors avoid injuring the pedicle during screw implantation. However, because of the complex spatial structures of vertebrae and the close connection between the pedicle and other parts of the vertebrae, it is challenging to locate and recognize the pedicle of the vertebral arch in 2D or 3D vertebral images.
METHODS: In this paper, based on deep learning technology, we propose a method for automatically recognizing the vertebral pedicle in individ

Bilateral complete clefts represent the result of an incomplete fusion with all the morphologic components present. It is well known that patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate have typical characteristics such as insufficient medial face development with an orthodontic class III tendency, flat nose and short columella with abnormal nasolabial angle, bilateral oronasal fistulas, alterations in the number and position of the lateral incisors, and agenesis or supernumerary teeth. Successfully solving these cases, results in a difficult challenge and studies showing extended follow-up are n
