Bioarchaeologists rely on accurate estimations of age-at-death. Clearly, some pathological conditions are associated with gross morphological changes in the skeleton that could impact the effectiveness of age-at-death estimation (i.e. methods based on the pelvis, fourth rib, dental attrition, and cranial stenosis). The magnitude of this problem has not been widely studied due to a paucity of pathological skeletons of known age. We assessed age-at death for three individuals affected by bone dysplasias (achondroplasia, residual rickets, osteogenesis imperfecta) using cementum annulations and se

This is the first systematic large-scale palaeopathological study of adult vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia. One thousand one hundred and eighty-one skeletons from multiple urban contexts in post-mediaeval England (c. AD 1700-1855) were analysed. Twelve adults with evidence of osteomalacia were identified. When added to the seven cases previously identified by Brickley et al. (2007) the individual prevalence rate increased to 19 of 1323 individuals (1.43%). New lesions affecting the medial ilium, scapula coracoid process, proximal femur and vertebrae are presented. These are infrequently occu

The incomplete skeletonized remains of Person 3/3a, from Shaft Tomb 3 of Theban Tomb (TT) 65, show mixed osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions in the left os coxa, sacrum, and distal right radius, with less pronounced osteoblastic, possibly related lesions elsewhere. Iliacus-piriformis abscess and septic arthritis are deemed primarily responsible while other considered etiological entities are less likely.

This study analyses changes in the region of the oval window suggestive of stapedial footplate fixation in archaeological human skeletal remains. We endoscopically investigated 621 temporal bones of 385 individuals from five medieval sites in Germany to identify fixations of the stapedial footplate. For differential diagnosis, four cases suspicious of representing stapes fixation or remnants of the fixed footplate were further investigated using microscopic techniques (brightfield and darkfield imaging, phase-contrast microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, CLSM, SEM-BSE imaging), and EDX-analysi

The Broken Hill (Kabwe) 1 cranium exhibits dental caries on ten teeth, multiple periapical lesions, periodontal disease, severe anterior dental wear, and hypercementosis, conditions all little-studied in Middle Pleistocene humans and making Broken Hill 1 of great value to discussions of the antiquity of oral pathological conditions. These individual pathological conditions, however, have never previously been described in detail; the focus has been on diagnosing an overarching syndrome connecting the temporal and oral lesions. This case study examines the individual dentoalveolar pathological

Metabolic disorders, such as scurvy, manifested in human skeletal remains provide insight into health, nutrition, and environmental quality in past populations. Porous cranial vault lesions are often used to diagnose metabolic conditions in subadult remains, but overlapping gross lesion expressions have led to over-diagnosis of anemia and under-diagnosis of scurvy. Studies by Ortner and colleagues have suggested that specific porous cranial lesions are pathognomonic of scurvy, but additional diagnostic tools are necessary. In this technical report, we offer a preliminary assessment of cranial

Saranda Kolones (Forty Columns) at Paphos in Cyprus was a mediaeval concentric castle built after King Richard I of England captured the island in 1191AD, during the Third Crusade. The aim of this research is to determine whether the garrison of the castle was infected by intestinal parasitic helminths (endoparasites). The analysis was undertaken on soil sediments recovered from a latrine inside the castle. The microscopic examination demonstrated the eggs of two species of parasites, the roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura). Control samples were negative, confir

Over recent decades histology has increasingly been used as a diagnostic tool in human dry bone palaeopathology. Still, the use of histology in human dry bone is associated with various problems, including a lack of pathognomonic histomorphology and a need for more experimental data. Consequently, the value of histology as diagnostic tool in human dry bone remains a subject for debate. Here we review all published palaeohistopathological research in human dry bone. A systematic search identified 3363 articles, with the 64 most relevant citations studied in depth. We specifically focused on the

A skeleton from the Late Roman period, recovered in Amiens, northern France, exhibits multiple symmetrical marginal erosions, primarily involving the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints. Other skeletal changes include erosions of several peripheral joints and some entheses, and severe osteoporosis. Macroscopic and radiological aspects of the lesions, as well as the absence of spinal and sacroiliac joints involvement, are consistent with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Differential diagnosis includes other erosive arthropathies, in particular the diseases belonging to the sp

Os odontoideum is a rare craniocervical abnormality of the axis resulting in absence (aplasia) of the dens and, possibly, dislocation of the atlantoaxial articulation. Skeleton 0202 from the Osteology Collection at Khon Kaen University, Thailand exhibits aplasia of the os odontoideum with torticollis, accompanied by an unusual constellation of skeletal features that include craniosynostosis, platybasia with mild basilar invagination, unilateral Kimmerle anomaly, disuse atrophy resulting in "wasting" of the upper and lower limbs, and marked stenosis of the right foramen transversarium of the ax

Osteoarticular sequelae of smallpox (osteomyelitis variolosa) are uncommon today. Such lesions may be observed occasionally, however, in countries where the disease has been endemic. Without other forms of documentation, it is possible to suggest a diagnosis of smallpox in ancient skeletal remains and thus make a significant contribution to understanding the history of this disease. We have examined a subadult male (Skeleton 833), 15-17 years old at the time of death, who presents bilateral bone manifestations of the elbows suggestive of smallpox. No other bone is similarly affected. In additi

An early 15th-century burial from a basilica at Polis Chrysochous provides the first archaeological evidence of leprosy in Cyprus, extending the temporal depth and illuminating the biological and social history of this disease on the island. The skeletal remains of a young adult female (age 20-34 years) display pathognomonic features of lepromatous leprosy including maxillary alveolar resorption with antemortem loss of all but one incisor, remodeling of the margin of the nasal sill and resorption of the anterior nasal spine, with diaphyseal remodeling of hand and foot phalanges and the distal

The present study evaluates a fetal skeleton (B532) from the Romano-Byzantine period Kellis 2 cemetery (circa A.D. 50-A.D. 450), in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. This skeleton displays abnormal skeletal characteristics consisting of severe bowing of the long bones. Differential diagnoses using macroscopic and radiographic analyses indicate that this individual's pathological condition was caused by osteogenesis imperfecta (IO), possibly Type IIB/III, or Type IV OI, corroborating with characteristics reported in the clinical literature. Due to the severe bowing of the long bones, traditional aging

The skeletal remains of a young adult male (aged 25-35 years) recovered from an Old Kingdom cemetery at Saqqara, Egypt, displayed multiple skeletal abnormalities in the limbs and vertebral column. These included bilateral shortening and robusticity of the humeri with flared distal metaphyses and exaggerated muscle attachments, early-onset osteoarthritic changes in the glenohumeral joints, thoraco-lumbar scoliosis, deformities of the proximal tibiae characteristic of a genu varum condition, angulation and shortening of the fourth metacarpal and metatarsal typical of brachydactyly type E1, and p

A notable lack of agreement on a standardised criterion for representing changes in alveolar bone persists, which limits its application in forensic dentistry. This study aimed to describe the data on loss of tooth substance and alveolar bone in skulls. Dental and trabecular bone information from 28 skulls from the German Helmer skull collection was collected through dental charting, intraoral photographs taken with a DSLR camera (Nikon D5600, Nikon Corporation, Japan), and small radiographs obtained using a handheld dental X-ray device (Nomad Pro 2, Kavo Kerr, Biberach, Germany).
