GABAA agonist reduces visual awareness: a masking-EEG experiment.

Consciousness can be manipulated in many ways. Here, we seek to understand whether two such ways, visual masking and pharmacological intervention, share a common pathway in manipulating visual consciousness. We recorded EEG from human participants who performed a backward-masking task in which they had to detect a masked figure form its background (masking strength was varied across trials). In a within-subject design, participants received dextromethorphan (a N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist), lorazepam (LZP; a GABA(A) receptor agonist), scopolamine (a muscarine receptor antagonist),

Speech-in-noise difficulties in aminoglycoside ototoxicity reflects combined afferent and efferent dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF) often receive aminoglycosides (AGs) to manage recurrent pulmonary infections, placing them at risk for ototoxicity. Chronic AG use can lead to complex cochlear damage affecting inner and outer hair cells, the stria vascularis, and spiral ganglion neurons. The greatest damage is typically in the basal cochlear region, which encodes high-frequency hearing, with additional involvement of more apical regions. While extended-high-frequency (EHF) hearing loss (EHFHL; 9-16 kHz) is often the earliest sign of AG ototoxicity, speech in noise (SiN) effects a

Rapid Brain Adaptation to Hearing Amplification: A Randomized Crossover Trial of Personal Sound Amplification Products.

Understanding speech in noise is a common challenge for older adults, often requiring increased listening effort that can deplete cognitive resources and impair higher-order functions. Hearing aids are the gold standard intervention for hearing loss, but cost and accessibility barriers have driven interest in alternatives such as Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs). While PSAPs are not medical devices, they may help reduce listening effort in certain contexts, though supporting evidence remains limited. This study examined the short-term effects of bilateral PSAP use on listening eff

The effect of reward on listening effort as reflected by the pupil dilation response.

Listening to speech in noise can be effortful but when motivated people seem to be more persevering. Previous research showed effects of monetary reward on autonomic responses like cardiovascular reactivity and pupil dilation while participants processed auditory information. The current study examined the effects of monetary reward on the processing of speech in noise and related listening effort as reflected by the pupil dilation response. Twenty-four participants (median age 21 yrs) performed two speech reception threshold (SRT) tasks, one tracking 50% correct (hard) and one tracking 85% co

Neural representation of the self-heard biosonar click in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

The neural representation of the dolphin broadband biosonar click was investigated by measuring auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to "self-heard" clicks masked with noise bursts having various high-pass cutoff frequencies. Narrowband ABRs were obtained by sequentially subtracting responses obtained with noise having lower high-pass cutoff frequencies from those obtained with noise having higher cutoff frequencies. For comparison to the biosonar data, ABRs were also measured in a passive listening experiment, where external clicks and masking noise were presented to the dolphins and narrowban

Synchrony Detection of Linguistic Stimuli in the Presence of Faces: Neuropsychological Implications for Language Development in ASD.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be impaired in their ability to detect audiovisual synchrony and their ability may be influenced by the nature of the stimuli. We investigated the possibility that synchrony detection is disrupted by the presence of human faces by testing children with ASD using a preferential looking language-based paradigm. Children with low language abilities were significantly worse at detecting synchrony when the stimuli include an unobscured face than when the face was obscured. Findings suggest that the presence of faces may make multisensory processing

Effects of noise exposure on young adults with normal audiograms II: Behavioral measures.

An estimate of lifetime noise exposure was used as the primary predictor of performance on a range of behavioral tasks: frequency and intensity difference limens, amplitude modulation detection, interaural phase discrimination, the digit triplet speech test, the co-ordinate response speech measure, an auditory localization task, a musical consonance task and a subjective report of hearing ability. One hundred and thirty-eight participants (81 females) aged 18-36 years were tested, with a wide range of self-reported noise exposure. All had normal pure-tone audiograms up to 8 kHz. It was predict

Individual differences in speech-in-noise perception parallel neural speech processing and attention in preschoolers.

From bustling classrooms to unruly lunchrooms, school settings are noisy. To learn effectively in the unwelcome company of numerous distractions, children must clearly perceive speech in noise. In older children and adults, speech-in-noise perception is supported by sensory and cognitive processes, but the correlates underlying this critical listening skill in young children (3-5 year olds) remain undetermined. Employing a longitudinal design (two evaluations separated by ∼12 months), we followed a cohort of 59 preschoolers, ages 3.0-4.9, assessing word-in-noise perception, cognitive abilities

Normal adult aging and the contextual influences affecting speech and meaningful sound perception.

It is widely accepted that hearing loss increases markedly with age, beginning in the fourth decade ISO 7029 (2000). Age-related hearing loss is typified by high-frequency threshold elevation and associated reductions in speech perception because speech sounds, especially consonants, become inaudible. Nevertheless, older adults often report additional and progressive difficulties in the perception and comprehension of speech, often highlighted in adverse listening conditions that exceed those reported by younger adults with a similar degree of high-frequency hearing loss (Dubno, Dirks, & Morga

Backward masked fearful faces enhance contralateral occipital cortical activity for visual targets within the spotlight of attention.

Spatial attention has been argued to be adaptive by enhancing the processing of visual stimuli within the 'spotlight of attention'. We previously reported that crude threat cues (backward masked fearful faces) facilitate spatial attention through a network of brain regions consisting of the amygdala, anterior cingulate and contralateral visual cortex. However, results from previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dot-probe studies have been inconclusive regarding a fearful face-elicited contralateral modulation of visual targets. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the capture of

Auditory and visual lexical neighborhoods in audiovisual speech perception.

Much evidence suggests that the mental lexicon is organized into auditory neighborhoods, with words that are phonologically similar belonging to the same neighborhood. In this investigation, we considered the existence of visual neighborhoods. When a receiver watches someone speak a word, a neighborhood of homophenes (ie, words that look alike on the face, such as pat and bat) is activated. The simultaneous activation of a word's auditory and visual neighborhoods may, in part, account for why individuals recognize speech better in an auditory-visual condition than what would be predicted by th

Auditory filter nonlinearity in mild/moderate hearing impairment.

Sensorineural hearing loss has frequently been shown to result in a loss of frequency selectivity. Less is known about its effects on the level dependence of selectivity that is so prominent a feature of normal hearing. The aim of the present study is to characterize such changes in nonlinearity as manifested in the auditory filter shapes of listeners with mild/moderate hearing impairment. Notched-noise masked thresholds at 2 kHz were measured over a range of stimulus levels in hearing-impaired listeners with losses of 20-50 dB. Growth-of-masking functions for different notch widths are more p

Prediction of conductive hearing loss based on acoustic ear-canal response using a multivariate clinical decision theory.

This study evaluated the accuracy of acoustic response tests in predicting conductive hearing loss in 161 ears of subjects from the age of 2 to 10 yr, using as a "gold standard" the air-bone gap to classify ears as normal or impaired. The acoustic tests included tympanometric peak-compensated static admittance magnitude (SA) and tympanometric gradient at 226 Hz, and admittance-reflectance (YR) measurements from 0.5 to 8 kHz. The performance of individual, frequency-specific, YR test variables as predictors was assessed. By applying logistic regression (LR) and discriminant analysis (DA) techni

Speech perception in tinnitus is related to individual distress level - A neurophysiological study.

Individuals suffering from tinnitus often complain about difficulties understanding speech in noisy environments even in the absence of a peripheral hearing loss. This EEG study aimed to investigate whether aspects of phonetic perception are affected by the experience of tinnitus. We examined a sample of individuals with chronic, subjective tinnitus (n = 30, age range 30-50 yrs.), who underwent behavioural screening (standard tinnitus questionnaires) and comprehensive audiometric testing that covered peripheral and central hearing abilities (pure tone audiometry, suprathreshold audiometry (fre

Growth of suppression using distortion-product otoacoustic emission measurements in hearing-impaired humans.

Growth of distortion-product otoacoustic emission suppression was measured in 65 subjects with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss (HI). Measurements were made at four probe frequencies (f(2)) and up to five L(2) levels. Eleven suppressor frequencies (f(3)) were used for each f(2), L(2) combination. These data were compared to data from normal-hearing (NH) subjects (Gorga et al., 2011a). In both NH and HI subjects, growth of suppression depended on the relation between f(2) and f(3), such that the slope was close to one when f(3) ≈ f(2), steeper than one when f(3) < f(2), and shallower

Individual differences in behavioral estimates of cochlear nonlinearities.

Psychophysical methods provide a mechanism to infer the characteristics of basilar membrane responses in humans that cannot be directly measured. Because these behavioral measures are indirect, the interpretation of results depends on several underlying assumptions. Ongoing uncertainty about the suitability of these assumptions and the most appropriate measurement and compression estimation procedures, and unanswered questions regarding the effects of cochlear hearing loss and age on basilar membrane nonlinearities, motivated this experiment. Here, estimates of cochlear nonlinearities using te

The effects of age and cochlear hearing loss on temporal fine structure sensitivity, frequency selectivity, and speech reception in noise.

Temporal fine structure (TFS) sensitivity, frequency selectivity, and speech reception in noise were measured for young normal-hearing (NHY), old normal-hearing (NHO), and hearing-impaired (HI) subjects. Two measures of TFS sensitivity were used: the "TFS-LF test" (interaural phase difference discrimination) and the "TFS2 test" (discrimination of harmonic and frequency-shifted tones). These measures were not significantly correlated with frequency selectivity (after partialing out the effect of audiometric threshold), suggesting that insensitivity to TFS cannot be wholly explained by a broaden

Comparison of phonological and whole-word treatments for two contrasting cases of developmental dyslexia.

This study compared the effectiveness of two reading treatment programmes for two contrasting developmental dyslexics. W.B. demonstrated "pure" phonological dyslexia (deficient nonword reading but normal irregular-word reading) and N.S. "pure" surface dyslexia (the converse pattern). Both participants completed: (a) a phonological programme, which targeted the sublexical reading procedure through repeated exposure to word "families" with the same grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPC; e.g., frail, raid, bait); and (b) a whole-word programme, which targeted the lexical reading procedure through

The band importance function for the Dutch digits-in-noise test: A computational derivation using human and automatic speech recognition data, including extended high frequencies.

The band importance function (BIF) quantifies the contribution of each frequency band to the intelligibility of speech and is a key element of the speech intelligibility index. The BIF depends on the type of speech material and speaker characteristics. Several BIFs exist, but they do not cover all test materials used in audiology. This study aimed to determine the BIF for the Dutch digits-in-noise (DIN) test, a widely used speech-in-noise measure. Twenty young adults with normal hearing completed a speech recognition task using Dutch DIN triplets presented at multiple signal-to-noise ratios (S
