Profiling ethanol-targeted transcription factors in human carcinoma cell-derived embryoid bodies.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a collective term that represents fetal abnormalities associated with maternal alcohol consumption. Prenatal alcohol exposure and related anomalies are well characterized, but the molecular mechanism behind this phenomenon is not yet understood. Few insights have been gained from genetic and epigenetic studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Our aim was to profile the important molecular regulators of ethanol-related alterations of the genome. For this purpose, we have analyzed the gene expression pattern of human carcinoma cell-derived embryoid bodies in

Propafenone versus disopyramide: a double-blind randomized crossover trial in patients presenting chronic ventricular arrhythmias.

In vitro and in vivo electrophysiological studies have shown that propafenone could be classified as a class I antiarrhythmic agent. The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term antiarrhythmic efficacy and safety of propafenone in 10 patients compared to disopyramide in a double-blind randomized protocol. Included patients suffered from ventricular arrhythmias with at least 60 ventricular premature beats (VPB) per hour refractory to at least two other antiarrhythmic agents. At the end of the control period and of the two treatment periods during which patients received either propaf

Differential changes in GAP-43 or synaptophysin during appetitive and aversive taste memory formation.

Association between events in time and space is a major mechanism for all animals, including humans, which allows them to learn about the world and potentially change their behavior in the future to adapt to different environments. Conditioning taste aversion (CTA) is a single-trial learning paradigm where animals are trained to avoid a novel flavor which is associated with malaise. Many variables can be analyzed with this model and the circuits involved are well described. Thus, the amygdala and the gustatory cortex (GC) are some of the most relevant structures involved in CTA. In the present

Response in taste circuitry is not modulated by hunger and satiety in women remitted from bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) engage in episodes of binge eating, marked by loss of control and eating despite fullness. Does altered reward and metabolic state contribute to BN pathophysiology? Normally, hunger increases (and satiety decreases) reward salience to regulate eating. We investigated whether BN is associated with an abnormal response in a neural circuit involved in translating taste signals into motivated behavior, when hungry and fed. Twenty-six women remitted from BN (RBN) and 22 control women (CW) were administered water and sucrose during 2 counterbalanced fMRI visits,

Catalysts of violence against women students: the role of the university, aggressors, and victims.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to bring a multilevel perspective to the discussion of the antecedents of violence against women in higher education settings. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This paper was guided by the need indicated in the literature for research on the multiple levels that constitute the context of violence against women, as this is a public health problem, a designation that indicates the urgency with which this pervasive phenomenon should be addressed. The university context is conducive to this type of research, as it includes situations that favor instances of violence. Addit

What are the main barriers to healthy eating among families? A qualitative exploration of perceptions and experiences of Tehranian men.

Despite women playing a pivotal role in shaping nutritional patterns in their families, it is the men whose ideas and preferences, after children, influence the selection and consumption of daily foods among Iranian families. This study focused on exploring the main barriers to healthy eating as experienced by male participants of the Tehran Lipid Glucose Study (TLGS). A grounded theory approach was used for analyzing participants' experiences and their perceptions regarding these barriers. Participants were 98 men, aged 25-65 years, selected and recruited from the TGLS cohort. Data collection

Comparative efficacy of the standard flossing procedure and a new floss applicator in reducing interproximal bleeding: a short-term study.

This was a parallel stratified study which examined the effect on gingival health of a new floss holder and applicator, designed to deliver a 25 microliters dose of 0.1% chlorhexidine solution to each interdental embrasure during the flossing procedure. Fifty-two patients with simple chronic gingivitis were stratified according to age, sex, and baseline interdental bleeding score and then assigned to one of three treatment groups. One of the following interdental cleaning agents was used once daily during a 2-week period: conventional floss; a flossing device with chlorhexidine; or a flossing

Preferred characteristics of long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatment for adolescents with HIV in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: a qualitative study of key stakeholders.

Adolescents with HIV (AHIV) in South Africa experience poor outcomes across the HIV care continuum. Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LAI-ART) may address key adherence barriers, but its acceptability and feasibility among AHIV remain understudied. As formative qualitative work for a cluster-randomized stepped-wedge trial (ATTUNE), we explored perceptions of LAI-ART using the technology acceptance model (TAM). Four facilitators conducted 23 focus group discussions (FGDs) across four clinics with purposively sampled stakeholders: AHIV aged 12-19 years, their caregivers, and healthc

Living with a hidden disability - a qualitative study of post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, olfactory dysfunction has become increasingly prevalent, manifesting as complete loss of smell, reduced olfactory sensitivity, or distorted perceptions such as parosmia. This qualitative study explored how post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction is experienced and how it impacts daily life, well-being, and quality of life. METHODS: A qualitative design inspired by Ricoeur's phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used. Twenty patients with post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction were recruited from an otolaryngology department in Denmark and i

High-resolution quantitative proteomics applied to the study of the specific protein signature in the sputum and saliva of active tuberculosis patients and their infected and uninfected contacts.

Our goal was to establish panels of protein biomarkers that are characteristic of patients with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and their contacts, including latent TB-infected (LTBI) and uninfected patients. Since the first pathogen-host contact occurs in the oral and nasal passages the saliva and sputum were chosen as the biological fluids to be studied. Quantitative shotgun proteomics was performed using a LTQ-Orbitrap-Elite platform. For active TB patients, both fluids exhibited a specific accumulation of proteins that were related to complement activation, inflamma

It's all in the mime: Actions speak louder than words when teaching the cranial nerves.

Cranial nerve (CN) knowledge is essential for students in health professions. Gestures and body movements (e.g., mime) have been shown to improve cognition and satisfaction with anatomy teaching. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the effectiveness of didactic lecturing with that of miming lecturing for student learning of the CNs. The research design involved exposure of the same group of students to didactic followed by miming lecturing of CNs. The effectiveness of each lecturing strategy was measured via pre- and post-testing. Student perceptions of these strategies were measured by

Smoke and Mirrors: The Perceived Benefits of Continued Tobacco use Among Current Smokers.

Despite 50+ years of public health efforts to reduce smoking rates in the United States, approximately one-fifth of the adults living in this country continue to smoke cigarettes. Previous studies have examined smokers' risk perceptions of cigarette smoking, as well as the perceived benefits of quitting smoking. Less research has focused on the perceived benefits of smoking among current cigarette smokers. The latter is the main focus of the present paper. Questionnaire-based interviews were conducted with a community-based sample of 485 adult current cigarette smokers recruited from the Atlan

Chlorhexidine use after two decades of over-the-counter availability.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a compound with plaque-inhibiting effects and available only by prescription in the United States. In Norway, however, CHX has been dispensed over-the-counter for over 20 years, and this study was undertaken to evaluate dentists' perceptions regarding its indications, usefulness, and side effects. A written questionnaire was sent to a sample of 10% of dentists registered in Norway, 78% of whom (354) responded. Additionally, representatives from 2% of all dental practices in Norway were contacted by telephone. Fourteen percent (14%) of the respondents reported that they n

Applied neuroanatomy elective to reinforce and promote engagement with neurosensory pathways using interactive and artistic activities.

One in six Americans is currently affected by neurologic disease. As the United States population ages, the number of neurologic complaints is expected to increase. Thus, there is a pressing need for more neurologists as well as more neurology training in other specialties. Often interest in neurology begins during medical school, so improving education in medical neural courses is a critical step toward producing more neurologists and better neurology training in other specialists. To this end, a novel applied neuroanatomy elective was designed at the University of Texas Health Science Center
