Treatment of a mandibular molar with primary failure of eruption: A case report.

Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a rare inherited disorder that is uncommon in dental research. It is characterized by failure of healthy tooth eruption, which may result in unilateral or bilateral posterior open bite. To date, the etiology of PFE has remained elusive. The present study reported the case of a 12-year-old patient exhibiting unilateral open bite of the posterior teeth, with no evidence of local or systemic complications. The patient expressed aesthetic and functional concerns regarding the occlusion. Clinical and radiological examinations revealed unerupted mandibular molars

Natural Teeth for Prosthetic Solutions in Pediatric Patients: Two Case Reports of Biologically Based Removable Functional Partial Dentures.

Prosthetic appliances are essential for promoting the proper development of teeth, dental arches, and facial bones in children. Due to the constantly changing nature of a child's oral environment, these appliances must be temporary and require regular maintenance and adjustment to avoid impeding orofacial growth. A fundamental aspect of contemporary dentistry is re-establishing aesthetics. The absence of front teeth can cause appearance-related concerns in children. Personal appearance holds significant importance for children, particularly during adolescence. Even preschoolers, aged three to

Abnormal eruption of teeth in relation to FGFR1 heterozygote mutation: a rare case of osteoglophonic dysplasia with 4-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: We report a case and its 4-year follow-up of Osteoglophonic dysplasia (OD), a rare disease that disturbs both skeletal and dental development, which is usually caused by heterozygous FGFR1 mutations. CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents a case where a 6-year-old male patient suffered dysregulation of tooth eruption and was diagnosed with osteogenic dysplasia from a fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) heterozygote mutation. However, the number of teeth is within the normal range, and their roots are well developed. Several interventions were implemented with varying deg

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts: a Spanish tertiary care centre study based on HPV DNA detection.

BACKGROUND: The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOCs) has rarely been studied. The objective is to describe the clinicopathological findings in a series of OOCs from a Spanish population that were investigated in relation to the possible presence of HPV. METHODS: A clinicopathological retrospective analysis followed by a molecular analysis of 28 high- and low-risk HPV genotypes was performed in OOC samples of patients seen during the last 15-years in a Spanish tertiary care center. RESULTS: Of 115 odontogenic cysts with keratinization, 16 cases of OO

Nuclear DNA fragmentation during postnatal tooth development of mouse and hamster and during dentin repair in the rat.

The TUNEL (transferase-mediated, dUTP-biotin nick end labeling) method for in situ labeling of DNA strands was utilized to localize DNA fragmentation in cells involved in tooth formation in the neonatal mouse and hamster. Positive reactions for the presence of DNA fragments were obtained in some epithelial cells of the cervical loop region of incisors, late secretory, transitional and early maturation stage ameloblasts, stratum intermedium cells and in shortened ameloblasts just before eruption. Also, cells of the periodontal ligament of the continuously erupting incisors stained positive shor

An investigation of the rationality of lower third molar removal, based on USA National Institutes of Health criteria.

The appropriateness of surgical removal of lower third molars was audited in relation to 500 consecutive patients referred to hospital for third molar management during 1993/4. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) criteria were used as the validating standard. Immediately after patients had been seen for treatment planning, research workers repeated history taking and clinical examination and recorded the treatment that was planned. Appropriateness of treatment planning was then assessed. A total of 95% of patients had bilateral and 5% had unilateral lower third molars (976 teeth in all); 6

Thyroid radiation dose during panoramic and cephalometric dental x-ray examinations.

Radiation exposure from panoramic equipment can be reduced significantly by use of smaller film, adjustment of the beam height to the height of the smaller film, and careful positioning of patients. These techniques have no adverse effect on the quality of the diagnostic information needed in dentistry. In addition to describing methods of reducing exposures from panoramic machines, this study demonstrates that the use of a barrier collar during static, cephalometric examinations can appreciably reduce thyroid exposure. Since the objective is to obtain diagnostic information from the film with

Effects of orthodontic treatment and premolar extractions on the mandibular third molars.

BACKGROUND: The space available for an unerupted mandibular third may depend on the choice of premolar extracted. AIMS: To investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment and premolar extractions on the inclinations of the mandibular third molars and the space available for their eruption, and to compare these changes with a nonextraction group. METHODS: The pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs of 54 subjects (20 males, 34 females) were used. Eighteen of these subjects had the four first premolars extracted, 16 subjects had four second premolars extracted and 20 subjects were treat

Orthodontic extrusion in the transitional dentition: a simple technique.

Extrusion of teeth may be necessary in cases of delayed eruption, primary retention, traumatically intruded teeth, or subgingivally fractured teeth. Removable appliances are advantageous, as anchorage is not as tooth-dependant as in the case of fixed appliances. They are cost-effective, operator friendly, and a valuable treatment option to consider in cases where extrusion of anterior teeth in the transitional dentition is necessary. The purpose of this paper was to describe a simple, cost-effective technique using a removable appliance for extrusion of incisors in the transitional dentition.

Occult radiologic changes in the skull and jaw in familial adenomatous polyposis coli.

It has been suggested that radiology of the skull and jaw in familial polyposis coli may be a useful marker in up to 90 percent of cases. These x-rays were reviewed independently by a dental surgeon and a neuroradiologist in 51 patients. Only seven patients (14 percent) had significant lesion seen in the context of screening. Each of these patients also had other extracolonic manifestations of familial polyposis coli. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation experience with radiology of the jaw and skull is that it is not a useful screening tool.

Cone beam computed tomography for diagnosis and treatment planning of supernumerary teeth.

Conventional radiographic images are frequently used to detect supernumerary teeth. However, recent developments in 3D imaging systems have enabled dentists to better visualize supernumerary teeth, with better contrast and more details. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has improved diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with supernumerary teeth. The decision to use CBCT should be based on the diagnostic information required. This article presents three case reports of patients with supernumerary teeth to demonstrate the need for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning based on a co

Clinical relevance of third permanent molars in relation to crowding after orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental crowding and the clinical presence or absence of third permanent molar teeth. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients were analysed before and after orthodontic treatment and at least three years after the end of retention. The sample consisted of four groups: subjects whose third permanent molar teeth had erupted into the mouth, were non-erupted, were extracted, and were congenitally absent. Arch Length Discrepancy, Irregularity Index and observer bias were examined. Multivariate analysis of variance with repeated m

Diagnostic Pitfalls of Dental Follicles and Cyst-like Lesions in Juvenile Patients: An Early Odontogenic Myxoma Mimicking a Follicular Cyst.

The occurrence of cysts and tumors in pediatric patients varies across different age groups. Follicular and dentigerous cysts are among the most common lesions. However, typical odontogenic tumors in juvenile patients are not frequently observed. Early stages of cyst and odontogenic tumor development might exhibit some similar characteristics due to the presence of unerupted teeth or their relationship with various stages of tooth formation and eruption. Many small lesions are discovered accidentally on routine orthopantomography (OPG), while the bigger ones manifest themselves as bone swellin

The current status of cone beam computed tomography imaging in orthodontics.

Cone beam CT (CBCT) has become an increasingly important source of three dimensional (3D) volumetric data in clinical orthodontics since its introduction into dentistry in 1998. The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the current understanding of, and evidence for, the clinical use of CBCT in orthodontics, and to review the findings to answer clinically relevant questions. Currently available information from studies using CBCT can be organized into five broad categories: 1, the assessment of CBCT technology; 2, its use in craniofacial morphometric analyses; 3, incidental and missed fin

Traumatic intrusion of primary teeth and its effects on the permanent successors: a clinical follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: Owing to the anatomic proximity between the root of the primary tooth and its permanent successor, trauma to primary dentition may cause developmental disturbances in unerupted permanent teeth. STUDY DESIGN: This report presents the findings of a prospective 7-year study examining developmental disturbances of permanent teeth attributed to intrusive injury of their primary predecessors based on initial patient records and clinical observation. Intrusive injuries were diagnosed and grouped according to World Health Organization classifications, as modified by Andreasen et al. RESUL
