Explainable, modality-adaptive radiomics for MGMT methylation prediction in high-grade glioma: a decision-curve analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: MGMT promoter methylation is a critical predictive biomarker in high-grade gliomas (HGG), but its assessment currently relies on invasive tissue sampling. We aimed to develop an explainable, modality-adaptive, and calibrated radiomics model for non-invasive prediction of MGMT promoter methylation using multi-center MRI data. METHODS: Pre-operative MRI from the UCSF-PDGM and UPENN-GBM cohorts was analyzed using radiomics extracted from intratumoral and peritumoral regions. Conventional (T1, T2, FLAIR) and advanced (DWI/ADC, ASL) MRI sequences were included. A novel modality-adapt

Diagnostic value of synchronized phonocardiogram-electrocardiogram monitoring in children with ventricular septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases in children, accounting for 20%-25% of all congenital heart defects (CHDs). Current clinical diagnostic methods for VSD mainly include electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and chest x-ray, among which echocardiography is the "gold standard" for evaluating the clinical significance of defects and determining the need for intervention. This study aims to explore the application value of synchronous monitoring technology in the differential diagnosis of pediatric VSD (especially subtype distinc

ScaHybNet: a scalogram-based hybrid ensemble network for ECG arrhythmia classification.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, requiring the accurate and timely detection of arrhythmias to prevent sudden cardiac death. In this work, ScaHybNet, a deep learning ensemble model is proposed for multi-class arrhythmia classification using the widely adopted ECG Heartbeat Categorization Dataset. The dataset comprises 109,446 samples across five heartbeat classes (N, S, V, F, Q), enabling comprehensive arrhythmia analysis. The proposed method first transforms the ECG signals to 224 × 224 RGB-scalogram images using CWT with the Morlet wavelet. Then, a hybrid

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation prediction based on morphological variant P-wave analysis with wideband ECG and deep learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most frequent asymptomatic arrhythmias associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Identifying the susceptibility to AF based on routine or continuous ECG recording is of considerable interest. Despite several P-wave characteristics and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) linked to AF onset, neither factor has offered accurate predictability. We propose a deep learning enabled method for AF risk prediction. METHODS: We develop a novel MVPNet to predict the upcoming onset of paroxysmal AF. MVPNet combines wavelet-base

Spatio-temporal variability of near-surface air pollutants at four distinct geographical locations in Andhra Pradesh State of India.

India is highly vulnerable to air pollution in the recent decade, especially urban areas with rapidly growing urbanisation and industrialisation. Here, we present spatio-temporal variability of air pollutants at four distinct locations in Andhra Pradesh State of India. The mean concentrations of air pollutants were generally higher at Visakhapatnam site than Amaravati, Rajahmundry, and Tirumala sites. The mean concentration of particulate matter of diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) was higher at Visakhapatnam site (48.5 ± 27.3 μg/m3) by a factor of about 1.6 as compared to Tirumala site (29.5

Influence of inter-observer delineation variability on radiomics stability in different tumor sites.

BACKGROUND: Radiomics is a promising methodology for quantitative analysis and description of radiological images using advanced mathematics and statistics. Tumor delineation, which is still often done manually, is an essential step in radiomics, however, inter-observer variability is a well-known uncertainty in radiation oncology. This study investigated the impact of inter-observer variability (IOV) in manual tumor delineation on the reliability of radiomic features (RF). METHODS: Three different tumor types (head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM

Automated system for lung nodules classification based on wavelet feature descriptor and support vector machine.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide; it refers to the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lung. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the thorax is the most sensitive method for detecting cancerous lung nodules. A lung nodule is a round lesion which can be either non-cancerous or cancerous. In the CT, the lung cancer is observed as round white shadow nodules. The possibility to obtain a manually accurate interpretation from CT scans demands a big effort by the radiologist and might be a fatiguing process. Therefore, the design of a computer-aided diagnosis (CADx

Voluntary ankle contraction reproduces centre of pressure features commonly attributed to automatic postural control.

BACKGROUND: Postural control is often assessed through centre of pressure (COP) analysis to infer underlying control mechanisms. For example, during dual-tasking, measures such as sample entropy have been interpreted as reflecting changes in automaticity, whereas shifts in frequency content have been associated with stiffening, often attributed to ankle co-contraction. However, the specificity of these metrics remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of dual-tasking and voluntary ankle contraction on COP and electromyographic (EMG) acti

Altered Neuromuscular Time-Frequency Organization During Sit-to-Walk in Parkinson's Disease: An Explainable Artificial Intelligence Approach Using Surface Electromyography.

Neuromuscular dysfunction during the sit-to-walk (STW) task in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains poorly understood. We aimed to analyze surface electromyography (sEMG) signals across STW phases using explainable machine learning (ML) and deep learning approaches in PD. Individuals with PD (n = 101) and healthy controls (n = 50) performed a standardized STW task while sEMG signals were recorded bilaterally from eight lower-limb muscles. These signals were preprocessed and segmented into three phases in the STW task. Feature-based ML models were compared with convolutional neural networks (CNN) t

Multi-scale dynamics and environmental controls on soil respiration in the loess hilly region in China.

Accurate estimation of the spatial and temporal soil carbon dioxide (CO2) flux is vital for understanding the impacts of climate change on the soil carbon cycle. However, despite the expansion and refinement of weather stations, few statistical models have predicted soil respiration (SR) using meteorological data, particularly in deep soils. Thus, this study explored whether meteorological data can effectively predict SR at depths of 0-10, 10-50, and 50-100 cm, and examined the time-frequency patterns between SR and meteorological factors during 2005-2022 in the loess hilly region in China. Optical-Tattoo Sensing for Non-Contact Control of Bionic Limbs: A Conceptual Framework.

Conventional pattern recognition (PR) methods in bionic hand systems are reliant on contact-based sensors and remain vulnerable to the inherent instability of biological signals. This study presents an alternative method that uses a novel non-contact PR approach to classify the motion of individual fingers and hand grasping gestures. This method does not depend on biosignals; instead, it utilises optical sensing. To enhance optical differentiation during muscle contraction, interference-pigment tattoos were applied to the targeted areas of the skin of the muscular areas. In this approach, musc

Prediction of aortic valve regurgitation after continuous-flow left ventricular assist device implantation using artificial intelligence trained on acoustic spectra.

Significant aortic regurgitation (AR) is a common complication after continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Using machine-learning algorithms, this study was designed to examine valuable predictors obtained from LVAD sound and to provide models for identifying AR. During a 2-year follow-up period of 13 patients with Jarvik2000 LVAD, sound signals were serially obtained from the chest wall above the LVAD using an electronic stethoscope for 1 min at 40,000 Hz, and echocardiography was simultaneously performed to confirm the presence of AR. Among the 245 echocardiogra

Electrocortical activity in fetal sheep in the last seven days of gestation.

1. Electrocorticogram (ECoG) and myometrial electromyogram (EMG) were recorded continuously in chronically instrumented late gestation sheep fetuses (n = 9) to analyse: (1) 24 h ECoG patterns, (2) relationships between ECoG and myometrial contractility, and (3) 24 h ECoG patterns at the spontaneous onset of labour. 2. Spontaneous onset of labour was determined from the myometrial EMG. ECoG signals were purified by a denoising procedure of wavelet decomposition. High-voltage slow ECoG activity (HV) and low-voltage fast ECoG activity (LV) were determined mathematically, and HV-LV cycle periodici

Rapid improvement of renal microcirculatory homeostasis by liraglutide following diabetes induction.

AIMS: Renal microvascular dysfunction is a central driver of diabetic kidney disease, yet the potential for rapid therapeutic reversal remains obscure. We investigated the effect of short-term liraglutide on early changes in the renal microcirculation post-induction of diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was induced in BALB/c mice via high-fat diet and streptozotocin. Following induction, mice received insulin or liraglutide treatments for 1 or 2 weeks. Renal microhemodynamics was analysed using laser Doppler flowmetry and wavelet analysis. Histopathological evalu

EEG-Derived Wavelet Index for Assessment of Procedural Sedation in Children Undergoing Magnetic Resonance Examination: A Diagnostic Study.

BACKGROUND: Procedural sedation is often essential for children undergoing imaging examinations. Whether the wavelet index (WLI) could outperform Ramsay Sedation Score (RS) in assessing sedation depth and identifying children at risk of MRI sedation failure was unknown. METHODS: This prospective, single-blind study was performed at a tertiary care hospital. WLI and RS were measured in 74 pediatric patients who underwent MRI scanning after procedural sedation with chloral hydrate and dexmedetomidine. Once the patient reached RS scores 5 or 6, the MRI examination was initiated. Successful MRI s

Ex Vivo Differentiation of Cartilage Degeneration Severity and Subchondral Bone Using Vibroacoustic Signals from Instrument-Tissue Interaction.

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is characterized by cartilage matrix degeneration, which eventually leads to joint dysfunction and surgical replacement. Preoperative radiography, the standard for treatment decision making, provides limited information on the extent of degeneration, emphasizing the need for quantitative intraoperative techniques. This study evaluates the potential of vibroacoustic signals generated from instrument-tissue interactions to assess cartilage degeneration severity. A total of 136 ex vivo cartilage specimens of varying degeneration severity, histologically graded usin

Radiomics analysis of substantia nigra on multi-echo susceptibility map-weighted imaging for differentiating Parkinson's disease from atypical parkinsonian syndromes.

BackgroundWhile the "swallow tail" sign observed in the substantia nigra (SN) on susceptibility map-weighted imaging (SMWI) serves as an effective marker for differentiating patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) from healthy individuals, its visual assessment proves inadequate in differentiating PD from atypical Parkinson syndromes (APS).PurposeTo employ radiomic features extracted from multi-echo SMWI of the SN to distinguish between PD and APS.Material and MethodsSMWI data were acquired from 63 PD patients, 38 APS patients, and 89 healthy controls. The participants were randomly assigned to
