Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common forms of dementia in the elderly. In AD patients, β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are common features observed in the CNS. Aβ deposition results in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to the hyperphosphorylation of tau that are associated with neuronal damage. Cholinesterase inhibitors and a partial NMDA receptor antagonist (memantine) have been identified as potential treatment options for AD. However, clinical studies have found that these drugs fail to prevent the disease progression. From anci

Currently accepted conservative treatments of hypertrophic scars are limited to steroid injections, radiation therapy, and silicone occlusive therapy. However, the use of Mederma for these problematic lesions has become quite prevalent in the clinical setting. Little scientific evidence exists to support the efficacy of this product in reducing hypertrophic scars. The aim of this study was to study the effects of Mederma on hypertrophic scars in the rabbit hypertrophic scar model, allowing the histologic quantification of scar elevation, dermal collagen organization, vascularity, and inflammat

To elevate chemo-resistance of human cancer cells is a major obstacle in the treatment and management of malignant cancers. Diallyl sulfide (DAS), diallyl disulfide (DADS) and diallyl trisulfide (DATS) are presented in the Alliaceae family particularly in garlic. Although DAS, DADS and DATS have been shown to exhibit anticancer activities, there is little information on effects of these compounds on drug resistant genes in human colon cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Herein, we are the first to show that DAS, DADS and DATS at 25 μM for 24-h and 48-h incubations promoted expression of drug re

An increased prothrombotic state is a major risk factor for the development of heart attacks, strokes, and venous thromboembolism. Platelet activation and aggregation play an important role in determining a prothrombotic state. Although pharmaceutical agents such as aspirin, heparin, and warfarin are able to reduce prothrombotic tendency, long-term drug treatment may produce a variety of side effects, including bleeding. Diet is generally recognized to be significantly involved in modifying the individual risk for the development of thrombotic diseases, although its influence during the treatm

In this study, the toxicity induced by metronidazole, one of the most preferred pharmaceutical active ingredients worldwide, in Allium cepa L, a non-target organism, was investigated. Many genetic (mitotic index = MI, micronucleus = MN and chromosomal abnormalities = CAs) and biochemical (malondialdehyde = MDA, proline, superoxide dismutase = SOD, catalase = CAT, chlorophyll a and b) parameters have been used as indicators of toxicity. Furthermore, the degree of DNA damage caused by metronidazole was investigated by the Comet assay method. On the other hand, metronidazole toxicity was also sup

BACKGROUND: Malaria is extremely common in Ethiopia, and it is one of the country's most serious public health and economic problems. Traditional medicines have long been utilized in Ethiopia by people of various ethnic groups. As a result, the goal of this study is to record the use of Ethiopian medicinal herbs that have been used to treat malaria. Also, a critical review of the literature on the therapeutic properties of these and other Ethiopian medicinal plants that have been tested against Plasmodium spp. parasites was conducted with the goal of highlighting neglected studies and fosterin

The OH radical-initiated atmospheric oxidation mechanism of dipropyl thiosulfinate (CH3CH2CH2-S(O)S-CH2CH2CH3, DPTS), a volatile released by Allium genus plants, has been investigated using ab initio/DFT electronic structure calculations. The DPTS + •OH reaction can proceed through (1) abstraction and (2) substitution pathways. The present calculations show that addition of •OH to the sulfur atom of the sulfinyl (-S(═O)) group, followed by simultaneous cleavage of the S-S single bond, leading to the formation of propanethiyl radical (PTR) and propanesulfinic acid, is the major pathway when com

BACKGROUND: In the years 2003-2005 research was carried out concerning ethno-medicine in the high Molise (central- southern Italy), a region that has been the object of very little investigation from the ethnobotanical point of view. Upper Molise is a continuation of the mountain profiles of the Abruzzi Appenines: a series of hills, steep slopes and deep fluvial valleys making communications difficult. Primordial traditions (e.g. harvest feasts) are typical of the region.
METHODS: Field data were collected through open interviews in the field. These were conducted on both an individual and gr

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia's diverse ecosystems and substantial livestock population have sustained a long tradition of ethnoveterinary practices that predate and coexist with formal veterinary services. Despite the importance of this knowledge, systematic documentation in many districts remains limited, and associated plant resources face growing threats from environmental change and cultural erosion. This study aims to document and analyze traditional knowledge related to the use of medicinal plants in treating livestock ailments in Habru District, North Wollo Zone, Ethiopia.
METHODOLOGY: Ethnove

BACKGROUND: Protein detection on large somatic chromosomes typically includes paraformaldehyde fixation and squashing of enzymatically softened root tips in a buffer. It often suffers from chromosome clumping, poor chromosome morphology, non-specific fluorescence, insufficient immunoreactivity, which collectively reduce the credibility of immunolabeling, hindering its effective combination with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Material harvesting and pre-detection steps must be completed within a short time, usually one day, which complicates research. The aim of this study was to de

BACKGROUND: Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a powerful antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory agent. Aged garlic has more antioxidant and antimicrobial properties compared to fresh garlic. Garlic has been used for the treatment of many oral and periodontal diseases. However, the efficacy of aged garlic extract (AGE) against periodontal pathogens has never been explored. Hence, this in vitro study aims to assess the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, substantivity, and cytotoxic properties of AGE against key periodontal pathogens and oral tissues.
METHODS: The antimicrobial properties of the

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are a group of conditions marked by the formation of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs in all age groups, slightly more often affecting women. Several factors may be linked to the development of AIBDs, with nutrition being one of them. The literature mentions various food products and food ingredients acting as disease modifiers. Given the complex relationship between bullous diseases and nutrition, the current literature on AIBDs has been reviewed, with an emphasis on the influence of dietary modifications, various diets, and

Blowflies are vectors of microorganisms and human pathogens, and their maggots cause myiasis in vertebrates and infest and spoil meat and fish products. Essential oils (EOs) from spices were proven to be a safer and more sustainable alternative to synthetic insecticides for the control of blowflies and are suitable for protecting food from such pests. However, some EOs are not acceptable for environmental or topical applications due to their strong, unpleasant odour. In this study, we measured the acute toxicity and the repellence of two EOs extracted from the Andean plants Aloysia citrodora P

Clinical studies and case reports have identified a number of herb-drug interactions potentiated by the concurrent use of herbal medicines with prescription drugs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the mechanisms and clinical implications of such herb-drug interactions by reviewing published human studies. Both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic components may be involved in herbdrug interactions, although metabolic induction or inhibition is a common underlying mechanism for many herb-drug interactions. Drugs that have a high potential to interact with herbal medicines usually have a n
