Some wildlife species are capable of surviving in urbanised environments. However, the implications of urbanisation on wildlife health, and public health regarding zoonoses, are often unknown. Quenda (syn. southern brown bandicoots, Isoodon obesulus) survive in many areas of Perth, Australia, despite urbanisation. This study investigated differences in gastrointestinal and macroscopic ecto-parasitic infections, morphometrics and reproductive status between bushland and urban dwelling quenda. 287 quenda in the greater Perth region were captured and sampled for faeces (to detect gastrointestinal

Studies simultaneously examining tick-associated pathogens in wildlife blood and host-attached ticks remain limited in South Korea. We investigated selected Borrelia spp. and piroplasmids in blood samples from 34 animals-16 Korean water deer (Hydropotesinermis), seven raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and 11 wild boars (Sus scrofa)-and in 246 host-attached ticks collected from 13 animals of the same species-three Korean water deer, six raccoon dogs, and four wild boars-in Jeonnam Province. Paired blood and tick samples were available from eight animals. The ticks were processed as 186 m

Identification of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) is problematic due to inconsistent diagnostic characters, sexual dimorphism, individual variation, and vast morphological differences among life stages, as well as distortion through blood feeding. DNA barcoding has proven useful in delineating tick species, but available genetic databases are littered with misleading mis-identifications, hindering tick-borne disease mitigation strategies. Efforts are needed to generate high quality reference sequences from expertly identified and morphologically vouchered samples. To date, 56 species of

BACKGROUND: Tick infestation and tick-borne diseases remain a major threat to small ruminant production in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, favourable ecological and climatic conditions promote the survival of ixodid ticks, yet no systematic evidence has summarized their overall prevalence in sheep and goats.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guideline, a systematic search was conducted in databases (ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Wiley Online Library and African Journals Online) and other sources (Google Scholar and Google Engine). Studies published between January 2012 and

BACKGROUND: Ticks are vectors of pathogens that affect the health of animals and humans. With the constant trade of livestock across borders, there is the risk of new tick species invasion accompanied by the spread of infectious tick-borne pathogens.
AIM: This study sought to determine the diversity of tick species within abattoirs and a slaughter slab as well as identify the pathogens carried by these ticks.
METHODS: The ticks were collected from slaughtered cattle, identified and screened for pathogens using PCR and sequencing.
RESULTS: A total of 371 ticks were collected from slaughtered

Comprehensive disease surveillance has not been conducted in elk (Cervus canadensis) in Tennessee, US, since their reintroduction to the state 20 yr ago. We identified causes of death, estimated annual survival, and identified pathogens of concern in elk at the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area (NCWMA), Tennessee, US. In 2019 and 2020, we captured 29 elk (21 females, eight males) using chemical immobilization and fitted individuals with GPS collars with mortality sensors. Elk that died between February 2019 and February 2022 were necropsied to identify causes of death; these included d

MALDI-TOF MS has recently been proposed as an accurate tool for arthropod identification, including ticks. In this study, we evaluate and confirm the ability of MALDI-TOF MS, to identify different tick species collected in Cameroon, considering other lines of evidence (morphology and molecular). A total of 1483 adult ticks were collected from cattle in five distinct sites in the Western Highland of Cameroon. Because of engorged status and/or absence of some morphological criteria, some Ixodes spp. and Rhipicephalus spp. were identified to the genus level only. Among those, 944 ticks (543 males

BACKGROUND: Ticks cause substantial losses in cattle production, in terms of diseases, and reduced productivity, and are economically the most important ectoparasites of cattle.
METHODS: A cross-section study was conducted from January 2022 to August 2022 in the Bedele district to identify genera and species of Ixodid ticks infesting cattle and determine the prevalence concerning host-related factors. Adult ixodid ticks were collected from 384 randomly selected cattle by using forceps and preserved in separate collecting bottles with 70% ethyl alcohol. The collected ticks were identified unde

Ticks are involved in the transmission of many public health and veterinary important pathogens. Although tick-borne pathogens are widely distributed in South Africa, information on tick-pathogen relationship needs to be updated particularly using modern molecular techniques. This study used PCR and sequencing to confirm the identity of the tick species collected from cattle and sheep from KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Eastern Cape. Furthermore, presence of Babesia spp., Theileria spp., Anaplasma marginale, Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia ruminantium and Coxiella burnetii was detected from tick DNA

As human cases of tick-borne disease continue to increase, there is a heightened imperative to collect data on human-tick encounters to inform disease prevention. Passive tick surveillance programs that encourage members of the public to submit ticks they have encountered can provide a relatively low-cost means of collecting such data. We report the results of 11 years of tick submissions (2006-2016) collected in Monmouth County, New Jersey, an Atlantic coastal county long endemic for Lyme disease. A total of 8,608 ticks acquired in 22 U.S. states were submitted, 89.7% of which were acquired i

Erythema migrans (EM) rashes once considered pathognomonic of Lyme disease (LD) have been reported following bites of arthropods that do not transmit LD and in areas with no LD. Also, EM rashes have been reported in association with organisms other than members of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. Arthropod saliva has chemicals that have effects on the host and pathogen transmission. Tick saliva has protein families similar to spiders and scorpions and even substances homologous to those found in snakes and other venomous animals. Ticks "invertebrate pharmacologists" have a sophisticate

Sentinel animals are defined as sensitive indicators of environmental hazards that provide an early warning system for public health interventions. Spotted fever group rickettsioses are zoonotic tick-borne diseases that are considered endemic in different American countries with significant rates of morbidity and lethality, mainly when involving species such as Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri. Dogs have been recognized as good sentinels for these rickettsioses, since they are hosts to different species and stages of ticks, and they sustain a good immunological response after infec

Bourbon virus (BRBV) is an emerging tick-borne virus that can cause severe and fatal disease in humans. BRBV is vectored via the Amblyomma americanum tick, which is widely distributed throughout the central, eastern, and southern United States. Serosurveillance studies in Missouri and North Carolina identified BRBV-neutralizing antibodies in approximately 0.6% of tested individuals. To date, no specific antiviral therapy exists. As part of an initial screen, several nucleoside analogs were tested for their ability to inhibit BRBV replication in cell culture. Among the compounds assessed, molnu
