BACKGROUND/AIM: Ulnar compressive neuropathy is the second most common nerve compression in the upper extremity. Although numerous operative procedures have been defined for the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), the best operative intervention remains controversial. The aim of this study is to discuss the efficacy of a modified simple decompression (MSD) of the ulnar nerve in the treatment of CuTS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each patient was preoperatively examined, and the following data were recorded: initial complaint, duration of symptoms, and presence of Tinel's sign around the el

BACKGROUND: The nose is a dangerous site for filler injection. This study investigated the anatomy of the dorsal nasal artery at the upper part of the nose to clarify how ocular complications occur.
METHODS: Dissections were performed in 50 noses of the embalmed cadavers. Either the soft embalming or formaldehyde embalming processes were used.
RESULTS: The dorsal nasal artery is not a constant artery. The artery traveled in the subcutaneous tissue layer of the nasal dorsum on the transverse nasalis muscle and its midline nasal aponeurosis which connected the muscles on both sides. Bilateral

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that the thread carpal tunnel release (TCTR) is a safe and effective technique. Through a study on 11 cadaveric wrists, the TCTR procedure was modified and the needle control accuracy was improved to 0.15 to 0.2 mm, which is precise enough to preserve superficial palmar aponeurosis (SupPA), Berrettini branch, and common digital nerves. The aim of the present study was to verify the modified TCTR clinically.
METHODS: The modified TCTR was performed on 159 hands of 116 patients. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire was used for assessing th

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren's disease (DD) is a fibroproliferative pathology that affects the palmar aponeurosis causing the development of nodules and collagen cords and the progressive flexion of the fingers. The standard procedure is surgical fasciectomy, followed by high recurrence rates. Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) injection represents an innovative noninvasive approach to the treatment of DD. This prospective study was designed to examine the efficacy and safety of CCH injection performed in the outpatient, using local anesthesia.

PURPOSE: The standard palmaris longus (PL)-to-rerouted extensor pollicis longus (EPL) transfer was modified by taking the PL with an extension of the palmar aponeurosis (PA) and performing the transfer at the level of the thumb metacarpal. Our purpose was to evaluate whether this modified transfer could restore both the extension and the radial abduction of the thumb without rerouting the EPL.
METHODS: We restored thumb function of 5 patients with unrecovered radial nerve palsy (4 men and 1 women; mean age at surgery, 47 years; mean duration between onset of palsy and surgery, 13 months; and

Dupuytren disease (DD) is a common fibroproliferative disease of unknown etiopathogenesis affecting the palmar aponeurosis, causing reduced hand function and resulting in fixed flexion contractures of the digits. Current gold standard treatment for the management of DD is surgical excision involving removal of the affected palmar fascial tissue. However, there are potential complications associated with surgery as it is costly and a positive surgical outcome is often short-lived because the disease tends to recur. Therefore, there is growing interest in nonsurgical, outpatient-based treatments

The surgical technique of L2- L5 Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF), including the exposure of the surgical corridor, preparation of the disc space, and placement of the interbody cages, followed by pedicle screw fixation, is presented. To perform this technique, the patient is positioned in right lateral decubitus on a radiolucent table, and an oblique incision is made 3-5 cm anterior to the middle of the L3-L4 disc space. After dissecting the subcutaneous fat, the external oblique aponeurosis is cut along the line of the incision and the oblique muscles (external and internal), and the t

BACKGROUND: Dupuytren's contracture is a hereditary disorder which causes progressive fibrosis of the palmar aponeurosis of the hand, resulting in digital flexion contractures of the affected rays. Limited fasciectomy is a standard surgical treatment for Dupuytren's, and the one with the lowest recurrence rate; however, the recurrence is still relatively high (2-39%). Adipose-derived stem cells have been shown to inhibit Dupuytren's myofibroblasts proliferation and contractility in vitro, as well as to improve scar quality and skin regeneration in different types of surgeries. INTRODUCTION & IMPORTANCE: The first clinical presentation of a hernia developing along the Spigelian line had been reported by Klinkosch. The Belgian anatomist Adriaan van der Spieghel (Adrianus Spigelius) was the first to describe the semilunar line now known as the linea Spigeli in 1645. Spigelian hernias are rare and account for 1 % to 2 % of all abdominal wall hernias. Most of these hernia occurs in the lower abdomen where posterior sheath is deficient. The hernia ring is well defined defect in the transverse aponeurosis.

Introduction: The laparoscopic intracorporeal rectus aponeuroplasty (LIRA) was developed as an alternative for minimally invasive ventral hernia repair. This technique allows the closure of the defect and restoration of the midline without tension by plication of both aponeurosis of the abdominal rectus muscles combined with a minimally invasive intraperitoneal underlay mesh repair. The objective of this study is to report our early experience with the Robotic-LIRA (R-LIRA) technique and its safety and short-term efficacy. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing R

Background: Dupuytren's disease (DD) is well known as a fibromatous disorder of the palmar aponeurosis. Although there is a large body of literature on the etiology of DD in Europe, there have been few studies in Japan. The purpose of our study was to investigate the etiology and risk factors of DD in a large population in Japan. Methods: The subjects were voluntary participants from the 2014 Health Promotion Project, and 1,112 individuals were included (421 men and 691 women; mean age = 54.2 ± 15.3 years) in this study. The severity of DD was assessed using the Meyerding classification. All p

BACKGROUND: Scalp is comprised of five layers namely skin, connective tissue, aponeurosis, loose areolar tissue, and periosteum, each having distinct characteristics. The scalp mobility plays an important role in scalp wound closure. Thus, the estimation of scalp mobility is necessary to obtain a tension-free closure and fine scar in hair restoration surgery.
AIMS: To know the difference of available number of FUs while using two different scalp mobility methods, that is, horizontal vs vertical methods.
PATIENTS/METHODS: The study was conducted in a private hair restoration clinic in the pat

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Fertility preservation is a major goal in treatment of children with cancer. We describe a new technique of testicular transposition (TT) in patients treated with pulse-dose-rate (PDR) brachytherapy as part of the multimodal conservative treatment of bladder neck and/or prostate rhabdomyosarcoma (BP RMS).
METHODS: Medical records of consecutive patients treated between September 2016 and August 2017 were studied. These patients underwent a TT performed during BP RMS surgery by the same suprapubic incision. The external oblique aponeurosis was not incised. The spermatic cor

INTRODUCTION: Inguinal lymphadenectomy for metastatic melanoma is reported to have a complication rate as high as 50%. Wound dehiscence has been reported to occur in more than half of these patients, and as a result many surgeons routinely use sartorius muscle transposition to protect against the potential for exposed vessels. We report feasibility of minimally invasive inguinal lymphadenectomy intended to minimize wound complications inherent to this procedure.
METHODS: Five patients with histologically confirmed inguinal metastases from melanoma underwent minimally invasive inguinal lymphad

The cubital tunnel syndrome is one of the most widespread compression syndromes of a peripheral nerve. In German-speaking countries it is known as the sulcus ulnaris syndrome (retrocondylar groove syndrome), which is anatomically incorrect. The cubital tunnel consists of the retrocondylar groove, the cubital tunnel retinaculum (Lig. arcuatum or Osborne band), the humeroulnar arcade and the deep flexor/pronator aponeurosis. According to Sunderland it can be divided into a primary form (including the ulnar luxation and the epitrocheoanconaeus muscle) and a secondary form caused by deformation or
