Effect of fishing vessels on trace metal contamination in sediments of three harbors along Iranian Oman Sea coast.

In this study, the levels of natural and anthropogenic metal contamination (aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) in surface sediments of three harbors along the Iranian coast of Gulf of Oman were examined and reported for the first time. Effect of grain size, mineralogy, normalization technique using Fe concentrations, and different sediment quality guidelines were discussed. Data from the harbors were compared with other harbors worldwide. Sediments inside the harbors are characterized by moder

Quantum dot cytotoxicity in vitro: an investigation into the cytotoxic effects of a series of different surface chemistries and their core/shell materials.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a series of different surface coated quantum dots (QDs) (organic, carboxylated [COOH] and amino [NH₂] polytethylene glycol [PEG]) on J774.A1 macrophage cell viability and to further determine which part of the QDs cause such toxicity. Cytotoxic examination (MTT assay and LDH release) showed organic QDs to induce significant cytotoxicity up to 48 h, even at a low particle concentration (20 nM), whilst both COOH and NH₂ (PEG) QDs caused reduced cell viability and cell membrane permeability after 24 and 48 h exposure at 80 nM. Subsequent analysis

Intracellular K+ activities in Aplysia gut: effects of transport inhibitors on the Na+ pump.

Na+ absorption by the Aplysia californica foregut is affected through an active Na+ transport mechanism located in the basolateral membrane of the epithelial absorptive cells. Since Cl- absorption by the Aplysia gut has been shown to be very different from that demonstrated in vertebrate gut, the present study was undertaken to discern if Na+ transport was also different from that observed in vertebrate preparations. Utilizing microelectrode technique, it was demonstrated that intracellular K+ activity is above electrochemical equilibrium in the Aplysia absorptive cells and that serosal ouabai

Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Supramolecular Gels Based on Pyridyl-N-oxide Amides.

The nature of functional groups and their relative position and orientation play an important role in tuning the gelation properties of stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels. In this work, we synthesized and characterized mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)nicotinamide (L1-L3). The gelation properties of these N-oxide compounds were compared with the reported isomeric counterpart mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)isonicotinamide. Hydrogels obtained with L1 and L3 were thermally and mechanically more stable than the corresponding isomeric counterparts. The su

Irrigation water quality influences heavy metal uptake by willows in biosolids.

Phytoextraction is an effective method to remediate heavy metal contaminated landscapes but is often applied for single metal contaminants. Plants used for phytoextraction may not always be able to grow in drier environments without irrigation. This study investigated if willows (Salix x reichardtii A. Kerner) can be used for phytoextraction of multiple metals in biosolids, an end-product of the wastewater treatment process, and if irrigation with reclaimed and freshwater influences the extraction process. A plantation of willows was established directly onto a tilled stockpile of metal-contam

Cytotoxicity of cadmium and characteristics of its transport in cardiomyocytes.

Cadmium (Cd) is reported to produce cardiotoxicity at doses and exposure conditions that cause no effect in kidney or liver. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the cytotoxicity of Cd to neonatal rat cardiomyocytes in primary culture and to elucidate the transport characteristics of Cd in these cells at a nontoxic concentration. Cd concentrations of 0.1 microM and higher that are well tolerated by hepatocytes and renal cortical epithelial cells were toxic to the cardiomyocyte. The plot of initial uptake rate of Cd at various concentrations was nonlinear suggesting that, in

Inhibition of Autophagy Alleviates Cadmium-Induced Mouse Spleen and Human B Cells Apoptosis.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that can accumulate and cause severe damage to many organs, such as liver, kidney, lung, etc. Cd also significantly suppresses immunity, however, the underlying mechanism involved in Cd-induced immunnotoxicity is still unclear. The present study indicated that semichronic Cd exposure (7 days) induced apoptotic damage of mouse spleen. In human Ramos B cells, Cd exposure also induced apoptosis, which was dependent on Cd-induced vacuole membrane protein 1 (VMP1) expression and autophagy. Cd-induced autophagy and apoptosis were abated when VMP1 expression was kn

A polyvinylchloride-based cadmium ion-selective electrode using [Mo₂(OAc)₂(H₂-calix[4]arene)] as an electroactive material.

A highly electroactive material [Mo₂(OAc)₂(H₂-calix[4]arene)] is used as a neutral carrier for Cd²+ ions in this paper. The membrane is fabricated by using ionophore [Mo₂(OAc)₂(H₂-calix[4]arene)]:poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC): dibutylphthalate(DBP):sodium tetraphenyl borate (NaTPB) in the ratio of 40:300:470:5 respectively and tetrahydrofuran (THF) used as a solvent. The membrane electrode performed in the concentration range of 9.9 x 10⁻⁸-1.0 x 10⁻¹ M (2.34 x 10⁻⁵-23.64 mg/mL) having the Nernstian slope of 30.0±1.0 mV and the best detection limit was observed at 9.8 x 10⁻⁸ M (2.31 x 10⁻⁵ mg/mL).

Effects of cadmium on the hearing system.

The functional resemblance between kidney proximal tubular and inner ear epithelial cells which has often been pointed out in the literature led us to hypothesize that nephrotoxic agents that cause renal tubular injury might also impair the function of inner ear cells. As one of the most toxic environmental nephrotoxic agents is cadmium, we aimed to study its effects on hearing experimentally in rats. In this study, increased blood and renal cortical cadmium levels were associated with high cadmium accumulation in ear ossicles and labyrinth in rats exposed to cadmium. The changes in auditory b

Exposure to four typical heavy metals induced telomere shortening of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in relevant with declined urinary aMT6s in rats.

Environmental heavy metals pollution have seriously threatened the health of human beings. An increasing number of researches have demonstrated that environmental heavy metals can influence the telomere length of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs), which implicate biological aging as well as predicts diseases. Our previous study has shown that methylmercury (MeHg)-induced telomere shortening in rat brain tissue was associated with urinary melatonin metabolite 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) levels. Here, we aimed to further elucidate the impact of 4 typical heavy metals (As, Hg, Cd and Pb

Superior incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of Mo-doped activated carbon supported CdS-sensitized solar cells.

In this study, the performance of activated carbon (AC) produced from defatted black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) by chemical activation with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) activator in photovoltaic application is evaluated. It is of great importance to increase the photovoltaic efficiency of cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based solar cells, which are widely used in photovoltaic applications, with AC support. The main purpose of the study is to determine how the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of undoped and Mo-doped AC supported CdS semiconductor materials changes in the presence of AC sup

Amplitude and time course of evoked and spontaneous synaptic currents in rat submandibular ganglion cells.

1. Excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) were recorded in rat submandibular ganglion cells in vitro using the two-electrode voltage clamp technique. 2. The peak amplitude of EPSCs evoked by nerve impulses in single presynaptic fibres varied between 1.2 and 9.8 nA in different cells (mean = 4.6 +/- 2.6 nA; n = 23; -80 mV membrane potential; 22-25 degrees C). 3. Experiments were performed to re-investigate a previous hypothesis that different mechanisms underlie the generation of evoked versus spontaneous quantal EPSCs in submandibular cells. This hypothesis was based on the observation of di

Cadmium induces N-cadherin cleavage via ERK-mediated γ-secretase activation in C6 astroglia cells.

N-cadherin has known to be involved in tumor progression and metastasis. However, it is still obscure about the signaling pathway involving in the processing of N-cadherin. Thus, we examined which signaling pathway plays a major role in the processing of N-cadherin in C6 glioma cells following treatment of cadmium (Cd), a highly ubiquitous heavy metal. A cleavage product of N-cadherin, N-cad/CTF2 was observed by the treatment of Cd to C6 cells in a time and concentration-dependent manner. The production of N-cad/CTF2 was inhibited by pretreatment of γ-secretase inhibitors or siRNA transfection

Cadmium is a novel and independent risk factor for early atherosclerosis mechanisms and in vivo relevance.

OBJECTIVE: Although cadmium (Cd) is an important and common environmental pollutant and has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, little is known about its effects in initial stages of atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the 195 young healthy women of the Atherosclerosis Risk Factors in Female Youngsters (ARFY) study, cadmium (Cd) level was independently associated with early atherosclerotic vessel wall thickening (intima-media thickness exceeding the 90th percentile of the distribution; multivariable OR 1.6[1.1.-2.3], P=0.016). In line, Cd-fed ApoE knockout mice yielded a significantl

Nonselective cation current in rabbit ventricular myocytes.

Currents contributing repolarization in rabbit ventricular myocytes are very complex because the I(to.s) covers almost the whole repolarization phase of the action potential. The other components of repolarizing currents, such as I(Kr) and I(Ks), are small. In the present work, with whole-cell patch-clamp technique, a clear evidence was provided for the existence of a hitherto unreported, voltage-dependent, nonselective cation current (NSCC) in rabbit ventricular myocytes. Na(+), K(+), and Cs(+) can permeate through the nonselective cation channel and the NSCC can be blocked by Gd(3+). The cha

A novel Cd4O4 cubane cluster-based complex and its bifunctional catalytic activity aiming for artificial photosynthesis.

Artificial photosynthesis represents a promising route for sustainable energy conversion, utilizing efficient catalysts for both water oxidation and CO2 reduction. Cubane clusters as tunable molecular platforms bridging homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis offer practical strategies for designing molecular catalysts for integrated artificial photosynthetic systems. We introduce a novel cubane cluster complex [Cd(dpk(H)(O))(Cl)]4·2H2O (1), achieved by the solvothermal method, as the first Cd4O4 molecular catalyst exhibiting bifunctional activity that is important in artificial photosynthesis

Morphological and lipid metabolism alterations in macrophages exposed to model environmental nanoplastics traced by high-resolution synchrotron techniques.

The release of nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment is a significant health concern for long-term exposed humans. Although their usage has certainly revolutionized several application fields, at nanometer size, NPs can easily interact at the cellular level, resulting in potential harmful effects. Micro/Nanoplastics (M/NPs) have a demonstrated impact on mammalian endocrine components, such as the thyroid, adrenal gland, testes, and ovaries, while more investigations on prenatal and postnatal exposure are urgently required. The number of literature studies on the NPs' presence in biological sam

Exploring the Effects of Metabolism-Disrupting Chemicals on Pancreatic α-Cell Viability, Gene Expression and Function: A Screening Testing Approach.

Humans are constantly exposed to many environmental pollutants, some of which have been largely acknowledged as key factors in the development of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. These chemicals have been classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and, more recently, since they can interfere with metabolic functions, they have been renamed as metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs). MDCs are present in many consumer products, including food packaging, personal care products, plastic bottles and containers, and detergents. The scientific literature has ever-increasingly

The traditional Chinese medicine Qiangjing tablet prevents blood-testis barrier injury induced by CdCl2 through the PI3K/Akt/Rictor signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Environmental contaminants such as cadmium (Cd) may have a deleterious impact on sperm and reduce male fertility by compromising the blood-testis barrier (BTB). Hence, the effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Qiangjing tablet (QJP) on sperm quality and BTB alterations induced by Cd in mouse testes were examined. METHODS: Adult KM mice challenged with Cd chloride were examined, QJP was administered to mice as an oral drug by gavage, and the experiments lasted 2 weeks. Activation of GABAB receptors results in excitatory modulation of calyx terminals in rat semicircular canal cristae.

Previous studies have found GABA in vestibular end organs. However, existence of GABA receptors or possible GABAergic effects on vestibular nerve afferents has not been investigated. The current study was conducted to determine whether activation of GABAB receptors affects calyx afferent terminals in the central region of the cristae of semicircular canals. We used patch-clamp recording in postnatal day 13-18 (P13-P18) Sprague-Dawley rats of either sex. Application of GABAB receptor agonist baclofen inhibited voltage-sensitive potassium currents. This effect was blocked by selective GABAB rece
