The relation between estrogen receptors (ER) and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in situ within human breast cancer cells was analyzed. The influence of pathomorphological parameters (keratinization, grading, nucleolar organizer region (NOR) counts, automatic analysis of micrographs) on prognosis was determined for 284 patients with carcinomas of the oropharynx or hypopharynx. Indirect immunofluorescence(IIF) and double immunodiffusion (DID) were performed on the sera of 64 patients who had a nucleolar immunofluorescence pattern on HEp-2 cells. Forty-nine of the sera were from 296 patients with systemic scleroderma (SSc) and 15 sera were from 214 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). AgNOR (Argyrophilic nucleolar organiser region) has been shown in recent times, to have value in knowing the prognosis of carcinoma oesophagus. We have evaluated the significance of AgNOR in oesophageal cancer with reference to prognosis following treatment. We report here the first case of NPM1/RARA-positive acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) preceded by myeloid sarcoma (MS) in the vertebra.
