End-tidal pCO2 in blood phobics during viewing of emotion- and disease-related films.

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with blood, injection, and injury (BII) phobia respond to specific stimuli with vasovagal dysregulation and fainting. However, little is known about the role of hyperventilation in the distress of these patients. Hyperventilation, defined by subnormal arterial pCO2 levels, induces anxiety and may promote the development of fainting. We studied end-tidal pCO2 in 12 patients with BII phobia and 14 nonanxious controls during presentation of emotional films. METHOD: Ten film clips were shown, two in each of 5 categories: pleasant, unpleasant, neutral, BII-related (surgery

Computer-aided therapeutic diagnosis for anorexia.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is a clinical disorder syndrome of the wide spectrum without a fully recognized etiology. The necessary issue in the clinical diagnostic process is to detect the causes of this disease (e.g., my body image, food, family, peers), which the therapist gradually comes to by verifying assumptions using proper methods and tools for diagnostic process. When a person is diagnosed with anorexia, a clinician (a doctor, a therapist or a psychologist) proposes a therapeutic diagnosis and considers the kind of treatment that should be applied. This process is also continued dur

A conceptual model of the risk of elder abuse posed by incontinence and care dependence.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe and critically analyse the thinking that led to the concept of an association between incontinence, care dependence and elder abuse. BACKGROUND: Coercive or abusive continence care practices include chastising a person for their incontinence and overriding their attempts to resist continence care. Neglect in continence care is characterised by withholding or delaying responding to requests for help to maintain continence or to manage incontinence, and restricting a person's access to toileting assistance, incontinence aids or hygiene care. METHODS: Contempora

Psychological aspects of Peyronie's disease.

BACKGROUND: Peyronie's disease (PD) is an acquired fibrotic disorder (disorganized collagen deposition) in the tunica albuginea. This scar tissue or "plaque" builds up in the tunica albuginea and results in penile deformities. PD can have a significant negative impact on mood and quality of life. Although the psychological impact of PD has generally been understudied, there has been a growing body of literature that has assessed the impact PD can have on men's mental health and relationships. The aim of this study is to review the current literature focused on the psychological and relationshi

Emotions and health: findings from a randomized clinical trial on psychoeducational nursing to patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

BACKGROUND: Serious illness will inevitably lead to a fundamental emotional reaction. Traditionally, in interventional treatment or rehabilitation trials, the psychological status of patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators has been evaluated with anxiety and depression as outcome measures. In caring for these patients, the aim of nursing is to help patients manage life with complex heart disease. The early detection and management of negative emotional response might prevent the development of pathological conditions such as depression. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to

Identifying Unmonitored Tone Drift in Patient Education Materials Transcribed to a Lower Reading Level by a Large Language Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Effective patient education is essential in neurosurgery, but many materials exceed recommended readability levels, which can limit comprehension and informed consent. Simplification can also alter tone, potentially introducing bias. Recent studies have used large language models such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) to simplify neurosurgical patient education materials (PEMs), but the impact of this process on sentiment and emotional tone remains unclear. Our objective was to assess the sentiment and emotional tone of neurosurgical PEMs before an

Evaluating the performance of EEG based on ANN to predict the effectiveness of tDCS combined evaluative conditioning on obsession symptoms reduction in contamination OCD patients: Secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial.

Over 40% of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients do not respond to common treatments. This study was a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial, for predictability of effectiveness of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) with Contamination-Based OCD (C-OCD) using artificial neural networks (ANN) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Out of 54 C-OCD patients, 48 were randomized into 4 groups. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, each group received a combined intervention (real or sham) based on tDCS and Disgust Reduction Evaluative Conditioning (DREC) in 1

Consumer Acceptability of Animal-Source Food Alternatives: A Literature Review to Support the Transition to Sustainable, Healthy Diets.

Animal-source foods (ASFs) have long been central to human diets but have come under increased scrutiny in recent years because of relatively large environmental impacts, animal welfare considerations, and some negative health impacts. One option for addressing these issues is (at least partially) replacing ASFs in the diet with alternatives to ASFs (Alt-ASFs): conventional or novel foods with the potential to be consumed as a substitute for conventional ASFs such as meat, eggs, dairy, and fish. However, the adoption of such products at scale depends on consumers purchasing, preparing, and eat

Anxiety matters: a pilot lab study into food, weight, and virtual body exposure in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is a core characteristic of anorexia nervosa and a potential target of exposure therapy, which requires a profound understanding of the patients' fears in order to be successful. The knowledge about fears in anorexia nervosa that should be targeted during exposure therapy can be enriched by laboratory research to the precise emotional and behavioral responses of anorexia nervosa patients when they are exposed to disorder relevant fear stimuli. METHODS: In the laboratory, patients with anorexia nervosa (n = 15) and healthy controls (n = 51) were exposed to 1. their own body

Beyond sound irritation: cross-cultural evidence on the robustness of the five aspects of misophonic experience measured by the S-Five in a Polish sample.

Misophonia is commonly associated with negative emotional or physiological responses to specific sounds. However, the consensus definition emphasizes that misophonia entails much more than that. Even in cases of subclinical misophonia, where individuals do not meet the disorder criteria, the experience can still be burdensome, despite not currently causing significant distress or impairment. The S-Five is a psychometric tool for comprehensive assessment of five aspects of misophonic experience: internalizing, externalizing, impact, threat, and outburst, and includes S-Five-T section to evaluat

Effectiveness of a projection-based augmented reality exposure system in treating cockroach phobia: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite being the treatment of choice for phobic disorders, in vivo exposure treatment (IVET) presents some important limitations related mainly to low acceptance and high drop-out rates. Augmented reality (AR) technologies can help to overcome these limitations. Evidence supports the use of AR in exposure treatment for small animal phobia. A new projection-based AR exposure treatment system (P-ARET) that offers the possibility of projecting the animals in a natural and non-intrusive environment has been developed. There are no randomised controlled trials (RCTs) available that hav

What are common barriers and helpful solutions to colorectal cancer screening? A cross-sectional survey to develop intervention content for a planning support tool.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal screening using faecal immunochemical tests (FITs) can save lives if the people invited participate. In Scotland, most people intend to complete a FIT but this is not reflected in uptake rates. Planning interventions can bridge this intention-behaviour gap. To develop a tool supporting people willing to do colorectal screening with planning to complete a FIT, this study aimed to identify frequently experienced barriers and solutions to these barriers. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. SETTING: Participants were recruited through the Scottish Bowel Screening Progr

Stayin' Alive in Little 5: Application of Sentiment Analysis to Investigate Emotions of Service Industry Workers Responding to Drug Overdoses.

The opioid epidemic has increasingly been recognized as a public health issue and has challenged our current legal, social, and ethical beliefs regarding drug use. The epidemic not only impacts persons who use drugs, but also those around them, including people who do not expect to witness an overdose. For example, in the commercial district of Little 5 Points, Atlanta, GA, many service industry workers have become de facto responders to opioid overdoses when a person experiences an opioid-involved overdose in their place of employment. To provide additional insights into >300 pages of intervi

No Evidence for a Role of Oral Contraceptive-Use in Emotion Recognition But Higher Negativity Bias in Early Follicular Women.

Accuracy in facial emotion recognition has shown to vary with ovarian hormones, both in naturally cycling women, as well as in women taking oral contraceptives. It remains uncertain however, if specific - endogenous and exogenous - hormonal levels selectively impact recognition of certain basic emotions (or neutral faces) and if this relationship coincides with certain affective states. Therefore, we investigated 86 women under different hormonal conditions and compared their performance in an emotion recognition task as well as self-reported measures of affective states. Based on self-reporte

A causal role for the anterior mid-cingulate cortex in negative affect and cognitive control.

Converging evidence has linked the anterior mid-cingulate cortex to negative affect, pain and cognitive control. It has previously been proposed that this region uses information about punishment to control aversively motivated actions. Studies on the effects of lesions allow causal inferences about brain function; however, naturally occurring lesions in the anterior mid-cingulate cortex are rare. In two studies we therefore recruited 94 volunteers, comprising 15 patients with treatment-resistant depression who had received bilateral anterior cingulotomy, which consists of lesions made within

Schoolgirls' experience and appraisal of menstrual absorbents in rural Uganda: a cross-sectional evaluation of reusable sanitary pads.

BACKGROUND: Governments, multinational organisations, and charities have commenced the distribution of sanitary products to address current deficits in girls' menstrual management. The few effectiveness studies conducted have focused on health and education outcomes but have failed to provide quantitative assessment of girls' preferences, experiences of absorbents, and comfort. Objectives of the study were, first, to quantitatively describe girls' experiences with, and ratings of reliability and acceptability of different menstrual absorbents. Second, to compare ratings of freely-provided reus

Good recovery is not full recovery: emotion recognition deficits and different regulation strategies in mild right-hemisphere ischemic stroke survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Mild right-hemisphere ischemic stroke can affect socioemotional functioning even in patients with excellent functional recovery, yet facial emotion identification and habitual emotion regulation remain undercharacterized in this population. This study examined both domains in stroke survivors with little-to-no residual disability compared to healthy controls. METHODS: Fifty-three mild right-hemisphere ischemic stroke survivors (modified Rankin Scale < 2; chronic phase, 12-24 months post-stroke) and 60 neurologically healthy controls completed a 24-item forced-choice identificati
