The object of paper has been the study of amebic seroepidemiology in the northern region of Mexico, by means of an immunoenzymatic assay in solid phase (ELISA). The proteic antigen was obtained from axenic culture of E. histolytica's trophozoites of strain HM1:IMSS, by means of solubilization with phenoxy polyethoxyethanol (Triton X-100). Standardization of the method was obtained by analysis of 80 sera from patients with both a clinical and radiologic diagnosis of amebic hepatic abscess and 80 sera from healthy patients. The sensitivity reached 95% and the specificity was 90.7%. 15,457 sera f

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article presents a comprehensive narrative review of reactive arthritis (ReA) with focus on articles published between 2018 and 2020. We discuss the entire spectrum of microbial agents known to be the main causative agents of ReA, those reported to be rare infective agents, and those reported to be new candidates causing the disease. The discussion is set within the context of changing disease terminology, definition, and classification over time. Further, we include reports that present at least a hint of effective antimicrobial therapy for ReA as documented in case re

A case of amoebic colitis and liver abscess is described in a previously fit 59-year old man who had been given the incorrect diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. His symptoms were so severe that a colectomy was being considered. The patient had a significant travel history including trips to Morocco, the Gambia and Cape Verde, putting him at risk of acquiring amoebic disease. However, this history was not ascertained until much later on in the disease process. The case highlighted crucial learning points including the importance of taking a lifelong travel history, the difficulties in telling ulc

INTRODUCTION: Literature data provide little information about protozoa infections and gut microbiota compositional shifts in humans. This preliminary study aimed to describe the fecal bacterial community composition of people from Côte d'Ivoire harboring Giardia duodenalis, Entamoeba spp., and Blastocystis hominis, in trying to discover possible alterations in their fecal microbiota structure related to the presence of such parasites.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty fecal samples were collected from people inhabiting three different localities of Côte d'Ivoire for copromicroscopic analysis and molecular

Bolivia is one of the countries with a high intestinal helminth and protozoan infection rate. Despite the high prevalence of the parasitic infection, nationwide preventive measures for Bolivian children have not yet been implemented. We evaluated the effect of mass stool examination and treatment as a strategy for decreasing the infection rate. This study was conducted between 2013 and 2015 in children aged 2-18 years. A total of 2,033 stool samples (575 in 2013, 815 in 2014 and 642 in 2015) were collected and examined using the formalin-ether medical sedimentation method. As an anthelminthic

Detection of Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent of amoebiasis, is an important goal of the clinical parasitology laboratory. The identification of Entamoeba dispar as a morphologically identical but non-pathogenic species has highlighted the need for non-microscopic detection methods able to differentiate between the two organisms. In this study we evaluated the utility of conventional PCR and real-time PCR as methods for identification and differentiation of E. histolytica and E. dispar. The second aim of this study was to determine the relative proportions of infections caused by E.

A 125-kD surface antigen of Entamoeba histolytica is recognized by 73% of immune sera from patients with amoebic liver abscesses. Using pooled human immune sera a cDNA clone (lambda cM17) encoding this antigen (M17) has been isolated from a lambda gt11 expression library of the virulent stain E. histolytica HM1:IMSS. Monospecific antibodies, purified by binding to phage lysate of lambda cM17, and mAb FA7 reacted exclusively with the 125-kD antigen by Western blot analysis. Surface binding and cap formation are observed with patient sera, purified monospecific antiserum, and mAb FA7. Correspond

During invasion, Entamoeba histolytica (Eh) encounter macrophages and activate them to elicit tissue damaging pro-inflammatory responses. When Eh binds macrophages via the Gal-lectin, surface EhCP-A5 RGD sequence ligates α5β1 integrin to activate caspase-1 in a complex known as the NLRP3 inflammasome. In this study, we investigated Eh requirements underlying macrophage caspase-4 and -1 activation and the role caspase-4 and gasdermin D (GSDMD) play in augmenting pro-inflammatory cytokine responses. Caspase-4 activation was similar to caspase-1 requiring live Eh attachment via the Gal-lectin and

BACKGROUND: Helminths affect the outcome of tuberculosis by shifting cell mediated immune response to humoral and by total suppression of the host immune system. On the reverse, Mycobacterium infection favors immune escape of helminths. Therefore assessing helminth co-infection rate and predisposing factors in tuberculosis patients is mandatory to set strategies for better case management.
METHODS: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted in Arba Minch to assess the prevalence and associated factors of intestinal helminths among pulmonary tuberculosis patients from January to August

Intestinal amebiasis is a major cause of diarrhea. However, research on host-amebae interactions has been hampered owing to a lack of appropriate animal models. Recently, a mouse model of intestinal amebiasis was established, and using it, we reported that Entamoeba moshkovskii colonized the intestine in a manner similar to that of the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica In this study, we evaluated the protective mechanisms present against amebae using this model. CBA/J mice infected with E. histolytica had a persistent infection without apparent symptoms. In contrast, E. moshkovskii-infected mic

Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins are key physiological regulators of both innate and adaptive immunity. These proteins belong to the three major classes of modulators of cytokines signaling. In the following article, we used porcine polarized intestinal cells to study early response to the protozoan, Entamoeba histolytica, and we identified by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) PCR porcine SOCS1, SOCS4, SOCS5 and SOCS6 encoding sequences. With more than 92% identity predicted porcine SOCS proteins are very similar to their human counterparts. Among SOCS transcripts, only S

Infection with the human pathogenic parasite Entamoeba histolytica has not been well-characterized in northeastern Brazil. In this study, the prevalence of E. histolytica infection in a slum in northeastern Brazil was assayed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibodies against the galactose/N-acetyl-D-galactosamine (Gal/GalNAc)-inhibitable adherence lectin of E. histolytica. Sera from a total of 335 individuals were examined for anti-Gal/GalNAc lectin antibodies. The overall seropositivity was 24.7%; 29.4% of females and 19.4% of males were positive. Among different age g

Stools from 1000 travellers returning from the tropics were examined for intestinal parasites. The most frequently isolated intestinal pathogens were Giardia lamblia (5%) and E. histolytica (3.6%). For 21 out of 36 E. histolytica isolates iso-enzyme differentiation by starch-gel electrophoresis was possible, yielding a pathogenic pattern in four. This finding correlated closely with clinical symptoms and positive serology, while E. histolytica with non-pathogenic zymodeme should not be considered as a cause of diarrhoea.

A survey of intestinal parasitism was conducted at Yaviza, a town in eastern Panama's Province of Darien. Single stool specimens from 202 persons, representing 11 percent of the town's total population, were examined. In all, 181 (90 per cent) of the specimens examined were found positive for one or more potentially pathogenic parasites. The most common parasite found was Trichuris trichiura, which was observed in 80 per cent of the samples. Others were Ascaris lumbricoides, in 62 per cent of the samples; hookworm, in 41 per cent; Entamoeba histolytica, in 16 per cent; Stronhyloides stercorali

These updated guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation review the diagnosis, prevention, and management of intestinal parasites in the pre- and post-transplant period. Intestinal parasites are prevalent in the developing regions of the world. With increasing travel to and from endemic regions, changing immigration patterns, and the expansion of transplant medicine in developing countries, they are increasingly recognized as a source of morbidity and mortality in solid-organ transplant recipients. Parasitic infections may be acquir

Embedded in the colonic mucus are cathelicidins, small cationic peptides secreted by colonic epithelial cells. Humans and mice have one cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (CRAMP) each, LL-37/hCAP-18 and Cramp, respectively, with related structure and functions. Altered production of MUC2 mucin and antimicrobial peptides is characteristic of intestinal amebiasis. The interactions between MUC2 mucin and cathelicidins in conferring innate immunity against Entamoeba histolytica are not well characterized. In this study, we quantified whether MUC2 expression and release could regulate the e

This study was carried out in 1997 to 1998, to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasite infestations due to groundwater pollution at Yeumbeul, Senegal, and to follow the progression of parasite infestations following anti-parasite treatment. The study included 705 people living in a suburban zone in which the water table was polluted with nitrates of fecal origin. These individuals consumed either well water or water from springs. The overall prevalence of parasite infestation was 42.26%, but varied significantly with age (p < 0.001). Individuals who consumed well water were more freque
