UNLABELLED: Common activities of daily living naturally blend walking on level ground, stairs, and slopes. Predicting human locomotion behavior across these environments is critical for control design in lower-limb assistive devices. One approach to achieving this goal is to use feedforward simulation of conceptual gait models that capture the whole body dynamics of human locomotion. So far, however, these models have mainly been developed to predict human walking and running dynamics on level ground.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a conceptual gait model that can walk on level ground as well as negot

BACKGROUND: In post-stroke rehabilitation, functional connectivity (FC), motor-related cortical potential (MRCP), and gait activities are common measures related to recovery outcomes. However, the interrelationship between FC, MRCP, gait activities, and bipedal distinguishability have yet to be investigated.
METHODS: Ten participants were equipped with EEG devices and inertial measurement units (IMUs) while performing lower limb motor preparation (MP) and motor execution (ME) tasks. MRCP, FCs, and bipedal distinguishability were extracted from the EEG signals, while the change in knee degree

There has been increased interest in using residual muscle activity for neural control of powered lower-limb prostheses. However, only surface electromyography (EMG)-based decoders have been investigated. This study aims to investigate the potential of using motor unit (MU)-based decoding methods as an alternative to EMG-based intent recognition for ankle torque estimation. Eight people without amputation (NON) and seven people with amputation (AMP) participated in the experiments. Subjects conducted isometric dorsi- and plantarflexion with their intact limb by tracing desired muscle activity

OBJECTIVE: Poor ergonomic posture during interventional procedures might lead to increased physical discomfort and work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Adjunctive equipment such as lead aprons (LAs) has been shown to increase ergonomic posture risk (EPR). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of StemRad MD (StemRad Ltd., Tel Aviv, Israel), a weightless exoskeleton-based radiation protective ensemble, in reducing EPR on the operator using wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors.
METHODS: A prospective, observational study was conducted at an academic hospita

Robotic exoskeletons for physical rehabilitation have been utilized for retraining patients suffering from paraplegia and enhancing motor recovery in recent years. However, users are not voluntarily involved in most systems. This paper aims to develop a locomotion trainer with multiple gait patterns, which can be controlled by the active motion intention of users. A multimodal human-robot interaction (HRI) system is established to enhance subject's active participation during gait rehabilitation, which includes cognitive HRI (cHRI) and physical HRI (pHRI). The cHRI adopts brain-computer interf

A hybrid neuroprosthesis that combines human muscle power, elicited through functional electrical stimulation (FES), with a powered orthosis may be advantageous over a sole FES or a powered exoskeleton-based rehabilitation system. The hybrid system can conceivably overcome torque reduction due to FES-induced muscle fatigue by complementarily using torque from the powered exoskeleton. The second advantage of the hybrid system is that the use of human muscle power can supplement the powered exoskeleton's power (motor torque) requirements; thus, potentially reducing the size and weight of a walki

BACKGROUND: Robotic exoskeletons have changed rehabilitation care available to people after spinal cord injury (SCI). Yet, the current evidence base is insufficient to identify the optimal dose and neurophysiological mechanism of robotic exoskeleton gait training (RGT) as an effective rehabilitation approach. This study will (1) examine whether the frequency of RGT after motor incomplete SCI impacts function and health outcomes, (2) analyze the neuroplastic effects of RGT dose, and (3) evaluate the safety, tolerability, and feasibility of delivering RGT.
METHODS: We will enroll 144 participan

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitation of patients having undergone limb amputation is difficult due to problems related to poor socket fit, which often deteriorates comfort, gait and the ability to take part in everyday life and work. The endo-exo prosthesis has been an alternative provision for people having undergone lower limb amputation for reasons other than diabetes or peripheral vascular disease for more than 10 years. The system consists of an intramedullar, osseointegrated and skin perforating prosthesis, which is implanted in the remaining bone and has an abutment to allow the att

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) often experience impaired balance control and turning-while-walking ability, which increase the risk of falls and limit their community mobility. While overground exoskeleton training has shown promise in improving gait and balance, evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on ambulation of individuals with iSCI remains limited. This protocol outlines a cluster RCT investigating the effectiveness of overground exoskeleton-assisted gait training compared with conventional training and usual care in improving turning-whi

Lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots connect with the human body in a wearable way and control the movement of joints in the gait rehabilitation process. Among treadmill-based lower limb rehabilitation exoskeleton robots, Lokomat (Hocoma AG, Volketswil, Switzerland) has 4 actuated joints for bilateral hips and knees whereas Walkbot (P&S Mechanics, Seoul, Korea) has 6 bilateral actuated joints for bilateral hips, knees, and ankles. Lokomat and Walkbot robotic gait training systems have not been directly compared previously. The present study aimed to directly compare Lokomat and Walkbot

BACKGROUND: Gait intention is typically detected using electroencephalogram (EEG) and primarily focuses on recognizing the initiation of walking. Recently, wearable sensors have been extensively used to classify different walking patterns.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The study was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in recognizing directional change intentions during gait, hypothesizing that distinct patterns exist that indicate the initiation of turning before actual turning movements occur.
METHODS: Twenty healthy participants performed one to two gait cycle

Movement disorders present a substantial challenge by adversely affecting daily routines and overall well-being through a diverse spectrum of motor symptoms. Traditionally, motor symptoms have been evaluated through manual observational methods and patient-reported outcomes. While those approaches are valuable, they are limited by their subjectivity. In contrast, wearable technologies (wearables) provide objective assessments while actively supporting rehabilitation through continuous tracking, real-time feedback, and personalized physical therapy-based interventions. The aim of this literatur

The long-term goal of this research is to establish electromyography (EMG) as an intuitive and dexterous control interface for human-computer interaction. EMG is an established technique for classifying hand gestures and motions, used often in prosthetics and orthotics. Recently, there has been a shift towards recording EMG at the wrist, instead of at the forearm, to yield a more socially acceptable form factor for consumer applications. EMG within the size of a watch or bracelet means fewer electrodes and more variable placement with respect to the underlying muscle anatomy. Here, we explore

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent an emerging advancement in rehabilitation, enabling direct communication between the brain and external devices to aid recovery in individuals with neurological impairments. BCIs can be classified into invasive, semi-invasive, non-invasive, or hybrid types. By interpreting neural signals and converting them into control commands, BCIs can bypass damaged pathways, offering therapeutic potential for conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. BCIs' current a

Real-time gait event detection (GED) using inertial sensors is important for applications such as remote gait assessments, intelligent assistive devices including microprocessor-based prostheses or exoskeletons, and gait training systems. GED algorithms using acceleration and/or angular velocity signals achieve reasonable performance; however, most are not suited for real-time applications involving clinical populations walking in free-living environments. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a real-time rules-based GED algorithm with low latency and high accuracy and sensitivity

The suffering from organ dysfunction due to damaged or diseased tissue/bone has been globally on the rise. Current treatment strategies for non-union bone defects include: the use of autografts, allografts, synthetic grafts and free vascularized fibular grafts. Bone tissue engineering has emerged as an alternative for fracture repair to satisfy the current unmet need of bone grafts and to alleviate the problems associated with autografts and allografts. The technology offers the possibility to induce new functional bone regeneration using synergistic combination of functional biomaterials (sca
