Temporal bone computed tomography findings associated with feasibility of endoscopic ear surgery.

PURPOSE: There are no formal radiologic criteria to stratify patients for transcanal (TEES) or transmastoid endoscopic ear surgery for resection of cholesteatoma. We aim to determine 1) whether standard preoperative computed tomography (CT) findings are associated with the need for conversion to a transmastoid approach and 2) the amount of time added for conversion from TEES to transmastoid techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of consecutive pediatric and adult cases of TEES for primary cholesteatoma from 2013 through 2015 (n=52). TEES cases were defined as endoscope-

[Clinical views of cases with discontinuity of the ossicular chain].

It is well known that reconstruction for discontinuity of the ossicular chain, without inflammatory disease, has a good prognosis. Eleven cases of congenital ossicular chain malformation without ossicular fixation and 6 cases of ossicular chain injury due to the head trauma or an earpick , were treated surgically. The method of reconstruction and the prognoses, according to short-term and long-term follow up, were studied in these 17 cases. The following results were obtained: 1) In almost all cases, the pure tone audiograms were flat or slightly rising types, and the mean air conductive heari

Fetal ear malformations induced by maternal ingestion of thalidomide in the bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata).

Gross malformations of the external, middle, and internal ear were seen in fetal monkeys following maternal ingestion of thalidomide. Twenty-five pregnant bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) were each given a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg of thalidomide on day 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, or 29, or 30 mg/kg on day 25 or 28 of gestation. (Day of mating is assumed to be day zero of pregnancy). The skeletons, processed and stained with Alizarin Red S, were examined for changes in configuration and/or ossification of the ossicles and temporal bones. Bilateral temporal bones of one case, treated on day 24, were

Mobile genetic elements of global Escherichia coli ST131 clades with carbapenemases.

INTRODUCTION: Escherichia coli ST131 is an important clone linked with carbapenemases. Limited data is available about the international distribution of ST131 clades and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) linked with carbapenemases. METHODS: Short and long read WGS were performed on ST131 with carbapenemases (n=53) obtained from 21 countries (2010-19). We fully assembled 51 of the carbapenenemase containing plasmids that were grouped into MOB-clusters using MOB-suite v3.1.9. RESULTS: KPCs (n=37) were the most frequent carbapenemases followed by NDMs (n=8), OXA-48-like (n=7), VIMs (n=1) and IMPs

Genomic Insights into CRISPR-Harboring Plasmids in the Klebsiella Genus: Distribution, Backbone Structures, Antibiotic Resistance, and Virulence Determinant Profiles.

CRISPR systems are often encoded by many prokaryotes as adaptive defense against mobile genetic elements (MGEs), but several MGEs also recruit CRISPR components to perform additional biological functions. Type IV-A systems are identified in Klebsiella plasmids, yet the distribution, characterization, and role of these plasmids carrying CRISPR systems in the whole Klebsiella genus remain unclear. Here, we performed large-scale comparative analysis of these plasmids using publicly available plasmid genomes. CRISPR-harboring plasmids were mainly distributed in Klebsiella pneumoniae (9.09%), cover

Fecal cultivable aerobic microbiota of dairy cows and calves acting as reservoir of clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes.

Antimicrobial resistance has become a global threat to public health since multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have been reported worldwide carrying different antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), and animals have been described as a reservoir of ARGs. The presence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and ARGs in the food matrix is a risk to public health. This study aimed to research the presence of clinically relevant ARGs for important antimicrobials and genetic elements in fecal samples from dairy cows and calves on a Brazilian farm. In this study, a total of 21 fecal samples were collected

A comparative study on auditory and hyoid bones of Jurassic euharamiyidans and contrasting evidence for mammalian middle ear evolution.

The holotypes of euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya allinhopsoni and Arboroharamiya jenkinsi preserve the auditory and hyoid bones, respectively. With additional structures revealed by micro-computerized tomography (CT) and X-ray micro-computed laminography (CL), we provide a detailed description of these minuscule bones. The stapes in the two species of Arboroharamiya are similar in having a strong process for insertion of the stapedius muscle. The incus is similar in having an almond-shaped body and a slim short process, in addition to a robust stapedial process with a short lenticular process pre

Csf1 Signaling Regulates Maintenance of Resident Macrophages and Bone Formation in the Mouse Cochlea.

In the mammalian cochlea, resident macrophages settle in the spiral ligament, spiral ganglion, and stria vascularis, even at the steady state. Resident macrophages in the cochlea are believed to maintain homeostasis in the inner ear and become active, as part of the front line defense, following inner ear damage. However, the exact roles of cochlear resident macrophages require further clarification. Colony stimulating factor-1 (Csf1) signaling regulates survival, proliferation, and differentiation of resident macrophages and appears to be essential for resident macrophages in the inner ear. T

Insight into the mobilome of Aeromonas strains.

The mobilome is a pool of genes located within mobile genetic elements (MGE), such as plasmids, IS elements, transposons, genomic/pathogenicity islands, and integron-associated gene cassettes. These genes are often referred to as "flexible" and may encode virulence factors, toxic compounds as well as resistance to antibiotics. The phenomenon of MGE transfer between bacteria, known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT), is well documented. The genes present on MGE are subject to continuous processes of evolution and environmental changes, largely induced or significantly accelerated by man. For bac

[The active middle ear implant for the rehabilitation of sensorineural, mixed and conductive hearing losses].

Active middle ear implants, such as the Vibrant Soundbridge, are used as an important part in the rehabilitation of sensorineural, conductive hearing, or mixed hearing loss. The attachment of the Vibrant Soundbridge at the round window and the usage of the Vibroplasty couplers strongly expanded the application of the Vibrant Soundbridge. The Vibrant Soundbridge is developed for patients who have an intolerance to hearing aids and a moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss. The VSB also provides an optimal solution for patients with failed middle ear reconstructions or patients with atres
