BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae, Toxocara canis and Toxoplasma gondii organisms can all cause vision-threatening posterior segment disease. Diagnosis relies heavily on clinical findings, but detection of antibodies in the patient's serum may be helpful in some cases. The significance of a positive serology result depends on the seroprevalence in the general population. OBJECTIVE: To study the resistance of staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from children in Hangzhou to antibiotics and analyze the clinical value of mecA-PCR in determining oxacillin-resistant isolates.
METHODS: S. aureus isolates were screened by using latex agglutination test and identified with GPI card of Vitek system. Antibiotics sensitivity tests were performed using disk diffusion methods and tests for sensitivity to oxacillin and vancomycin were performed with a further E-test method. The indirect immunofluorescent technique has been used to study the specific immunoglobulin responses in twelve adult cases of acute uncomplicated rubella. IgG, IgA and IgM antibodies increased virtually simultaneously. IgG antibody persisted throughout the period of study but showed a slight tendency to fall in titre after 7 months. Using a new in vitro method of measuring the chemotaxis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes from peripheral blood, a chemotactic index has been calculated. The mean chemotactic index of 320 in 24 patients with definite rheumatoid arthritis, was significantly less (P < 0.0005) than the mean of 555 in 24 normal controls matched for age and sex. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and coagulase gene restriction profile (CRP) analysis techniques were used to analyze 71 Staphylococcus aureus isolates recovered from nine food-borne disease outbreaks. Twenty-two PFGE profiles and 11 CRPs were identified, with discrimination indices of 0.86 and 0.72, respectively. In addition, the variable regions of the coagulase genes of 39 isolates were sequenced and showed extensive identity, indicating that this is not an efficient alternative for the molecular typing of S. aureus.

Serum cryoglobulins were found in nineteen out of twenty patients with infectious endocarditis. The cryoglobulins were of the 'mixed type' consisting of IgG, IgM and IgA.
