The Effects of Dietary Nutrition Intake on Glycemic Variability in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is characterized by an absolute deficiency of insulin and dependence on insulin therapy. Therefore, glycemic control and management are important for T1DM patients, particularly glycemic variability, which is associated with the development of diabetic complications. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the glycemic variability in T1DM patients so far. Our objective was to identify the effects of food intake on glycemic variability in T1DM patients. METHODS: This was a single-center study that took place in the outpatient clinics of Pe

Evidence of Nasal Cooling and Sensory Impairments Driving Patient Symptoms With Septal Deviation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: About 260,000 septoplasties are performed annually in the US to address nasal septal deviation (NSD). Yet, we do not consistently understand what aspects of NSD result in symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: Blinded cohort study. METHODS: Two fellowship-trained surgeons blindly reviewed computerized tomography (CTs) of 10 confirmed NSD patients mixed with 36 healthy controls. All patients were correctly identified, however, 24/36 controls were falsely identified by both surgeons as patients (33.3% specificity), which were grouped as asymptomatic NSD (aNSD), while the remaining cont

Predictive Metagenomic Profiling, Urine Metabolomics, and Human Marker Gene Expression as an Integrated Approach to Study Alopecia Areata.

Involvement of the microbiome in many different scalp conditions has been investigated over the years. Studies on the role of the scalp microbiome in specific diseases, such as those involving hair growth alterations like non-cicatricial [androgenetic alopecia (AGA), alopecia areata (AA)] and cicatricial alopecia lichen planopilaris, are of major importance. In the present work, we highlighted the differences in microbial populations inhabiting the scalp of AA subjects and a healthy sample cohort by using an integrated approach relying on metagenomic targeted 16S sequencing analysis, urine met

Predictors of cigarette discontinuation and reduction among adults never planning to quit smoking: Longitudinal findings from the U.S. Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, 2014/15-2021.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarettes have increased in use prevalence among adults who smoke cigarettes. However, the population-based literature on e-cigarette use and smoking cessation largely still focuses on those planning or attempting to quit smoking. We evaluated predictors of cigarette discontinuation or reduction among adults not planning to ever quit smoking. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analyses using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2014-2021; Waves 2-6) cohort data collected in the United States. Data were collected using audio computer-assisted in-pers

Development and Validation of a Questionnaire to Assess Secondary Food Habits Associated With Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Food intake patterns among smokers represent a complex behavioral phenomenon, wherein, beyond general dietary habits, smokers often engage in specific food consumption during or immediately after smoking episodes. These "secondary food substances" include sugary products such as chocolates, candies, sweeteners, and chewing gum, menthol-based items, hot and cold beverages, carbonated drinks, mouth fresheners, and occasionally smokeless tobacco products. Such practices may be driven by factors including the desire to mask the odor or taste of smoke, sensory gratification, cravings, a

Vaping induces a marked pro-inflammatory state within the lung, which is at least partially due to its immunomodulatory effects.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarette use or "vaping" exposes the lungs to a large array of chemicals, flavors and nicotine. Initially marketed as a healthier alternative to tobacco use, research has since begun to demonstrate vaping plays a role in immune dysfunction and inflammation, with both similarities and differences in effects observed compared with tobacco use. One potential mechanism of immune dysfunction is related to the regulation of monocyte-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). MDSCs are a heterogenous population of cells that are generated and expand during inflammation and infection and are k

Developing a National Longitudinal Tobacco Cohort of Youth and Young Adults: The Tobacco Epidemic Evaluation Network (TEEN+) Study.

INTRODUCTION: Timely and relevant data are critical to monitoring the rapidly changing youth vaping epidemic and for understanding the prevalence, patterns of use, knowledge, and perceptions of tobacco products. While e-cigarettes have been the most used tobacco product among youth for nearly a decade, new nicotine delivery products continue to be introduced to the US market. Flavored tobacco products, including flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes, and flavored cigars, drive disparities in use by young people. AIMS AND METHODS: To examine tobacco use among youth and young adults, the Mo

Evaluation of the potential of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a sustainable alternative to obtain bioactive compounds from taturuba (Pouteria macrophylla)a.

Taturuba (Pouteria macrophylla), a native Amazonian fruit, is a rich source of phenolic compounds with potent antioxidant properties. This study evaluates the efficiency of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as sustainable extraction agents and their role in stabilizing bioactive compounds. To achieve this, the raw material was characterized in terms of its sugar, amino acid, mineral, and phenolic acid profiles. Bioactive compound extraction was performed using DESs (choline chloride + acetic acid (ClC: AcA), choline chloride + lactic acid (ClC:AcL), menthol + lactic acid (Men:AcL)) and 80 % ethano

Selective Reduction of Socioeconomic Disparities in the Experimental Tobacco Marketplace: Effects of Cigarette and E-cigarette Flavor Restrictions.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking accounts for >30% of the socioeconomic gap in life expectancy. Flavored restrictions claim to promote equity; however, no previous studies have compared the effect of cigarette and e-cigarette flavor restrictions among individuals who smoke with lower and higher socioeconomic status (SES). AIMS AND METHODS: In a between-group within-subject design, individuals with lower (n = 155) and higher (n = 125) SES completed hypothetical purchasing trials in the experimental tobacco marketplace (ETM). Evaluating the effectiveness of e-cigarettes compared with usual care for smoking cessation when offered to smokers at homeless centres: protocol for a multi-centre cluster-randomized controlled trial in Great Britain.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smoking is extremely common among adults experiencing homelessness, but there is lack of evidence for treatment efficacy. E-cigarettes are an effective quitting aid, but they have not been widely tested in smokers with complex health and social needs. Here we build upon our cluster feasibility trial and evaluate the offer of an e-cigarette or usual care to smokers accessing a homeless centre. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Multi-centre two-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial with mixed-method embedded process and economic evaluation in homeless centres in England,

Toxicology of flavoring- and cannabis-containing e-liquids used in electronic delivery systems.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) were introduced in the United States in 2007 and by 2014 they were the most popular tobacco product amongst youth and had overtaken use of regular tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes are used to aerosolize a liquid (e-liquid) that the user inhales. Flavorings in e-liquids is a primary reason for youth to initiate use of e-cigarettes. Evidence is growing in the scientific literature that inhalation of some flavorings is not without risk of harm. In this review, 67 original articles (primarily cellular in vitro) on the toxicity of flavored e-liquids were identif

Electronic Cigarette Liquid Constituents Induce Nasal and Tracheal Sensory Irritation in Mice in Regionally Dependent Fashion.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are currently used by millions of adults and adolescents worldwide. Major respiratory symptoms, such as coughing reported by e-cig users, including patients with e-cig, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI), indicate e-cig constituent-induced sensory irritation. However, e-cig constituent-induced nociceptive activity in nasal and tracheal respiratory epithelia (RE) and neuronal activation in the trigeminal ganglia and brainstem nuclei, which receive airway chemosensory inputs have not been examined and compared. Comparisons of physio

Analgesia mediated by the TRPM8 cold receptor in chronic neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic established pain, especially that following nerve injury, is difficult to treat and represents a largely unmet therapeutic need. New insights are urgently required, and we reasoned that endogenous processes such as cooling-induced analgesia may point the way to novel strategies for intervention. Molecular receptors for cooling have been identified in sensory nerves, and we demonstrate here how activation of one of these, TRPM8, produces profound, mechanistically novel analgesia in chronic pain states. RESULTS: We show that activation of TRPM8 in a subpopulation of sensory

Amplification of odor-induced Ca(2+) transients by store-operated Ca(2+) release and its role in olfactory signal transduction.

A critical role of Ca(2+) in vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) is to couple odor-induced excitation to intracellular feedback pathways that are responsible for the regulation of the sensitivity of the sense of smell, but the role of intracellular Ca(2+) stores in this process remains unclear. Using confocal Ca(2+) imaging and perforated patch recording, we show that salamander ORNs contain a releasable pool of Ca(2+) that can be discharged at rest by the SERCA inhibitor thapsigargin and the ryanodine receptor agonist caffeine. The Ca(2+) stores are spatially restricted; emptying pro

Effect of d-limonene, alpha-pinene and cineole on in vitro transdermal human skin penetration of chlorpromazine and haloperidol.

The aim of this research is to carry out a comparative study of the ability to cross human skin of two neuroleptic drugs: chlorpromazine (CAS 50-53-3) and haloperidol (CAS 52-86-8), in the absence and in the presence of three terpenes (cineole, d-limonene and alpha-pinene) with the purpose of considering the possibility of improving their transdermal penetration profile. Franz diffusion cells were used, in conjunction with human skin as permeation membrane. The permeation parameters calculated were permeability constant (Kp), flux (J) and lag time (Tl) in the presence and in the absence of enh
