Promising Essential Oils/Plant Extracts in the Prevention and Treatment of Dandruff Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Dandruff is a scalp disorder affecting the male populace predominantly. Topical agents and synthetic drugs used for dandruff treatment have specific side effects including burning at the application site, depression, dizziness, headache, itching or skin rash, nausea, stomach pain, vision change, vomiting, discoloration of hair, dryness or oiliness of the scalp and increased loss of hair. Thus, essential oils and extracts from plants could be valuable in the treatment and prevention of dandruff. AIMS & OBJECTIVES: This review aims to highlight current findings in dandruff occurrenc

Spread of Terbinafine-Resistant Trichophyton mentagrophytes Type VIII (India) in Germany-"The Tip of the Iceberg?".

Chronic recalcitrant dermatophytoses, due to Trichophyton (T.) mentagrophytes Type VIII are on the rise in India and are noteworthy for their predominance. It would not be wrong to assume that travel and migration would be responsible for the spread of T. mentagrophytes Type VIII from India, with many strains resistant to terbinafine, to other parts of the world. From September 2016 until March 2020, a total of 29 strains of T. mentagrophytes Type VIII (India) were isolated. All patients were residents of Germany: 12 females, 15 males and the gender of the remaining two was not assignable. Pat

Synthesis, determination of the lipophilicity, anticancer and antimicrobial properties of some fused 1,2,4-triazole derivatives.

3-Unsubstituted and 3-substituted-7-aryl-5H-6,7-dihydroimidazo[2,1-c][1,2,4]triazoles (1-14) were designed and obtained from biologically active 1-aryl-2-hydrazonoimidazolidines by cyclocondensation reaction with triethyl orthoformates (1-4), phenoxyacetic acid derivatives (5-13) and carbon disulfide (14), respectively. Their chemical structures were confirmed by IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, MS spectra and elemental analysis. In the high performance liquid chromatographic series of experiments, fourteen synthesized compounds (1-14) were chromatographed on octadecyl silica adsorbent and their lipop

Epoxyeicosatrienoic acid-mediated renal vasodilation to arachidonic acid is enhanced in SHR.

We tested the hypothesis that cyclooxygenase-independent vasodilation produced by arachidonic acid (AA) is mediated by epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and is blunted in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). At normal perfusion pressure (PP; 70 to 90 mm Hg), AA constricted the renal vasculature in both SHR and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats, an effect abolished by cyclooxygenase inhibition, and converted to vasodilation when PP was raised to approximately 200 mm Hg. Unexpectedly, renal vasodilation elicited by AA was greater in the SHR at high PP; for example, 2.5, 5, and 10 microg of AA p

Trichophyton mentagrophytes cause underestimated contagious zoophilic fungal infection.

Trichophytia infection, paraphrased cuddly toy mycosis, occurs primarily in prepubertal children, occasionally in infants and adults. The presented case shows the highly contagious infection of four family members with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Effective treatment requires detailed diagnostic: identifying the dermatophyte, finding the infection source, treating the infection carriers. Tinea must be treated systemically and topically because of infectivity and ignitability. Systemic terbinafine or fluconazole treatment and topical fixed combination isoconazole nitrate/diflucortolone valerate

Antimicrobial-impregnated central venous catheters for preventing neonatal bloodstream infection: the PREVAIL RCT.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials show that antimicrobial-impregnated central venous catheters reduce catheter-related bloodstream infection in adults and children receiving intensive care, but there is insufficient evidence for use in newborn babies. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were (1) to determine clinical effectiveness by conducting a randomised controlled trial comparing antimicrobial-impregnated peripherally inserted central venous catheters with standard peripherally inserted central venous catheters for reducing bloodstream or cerebrospinal fluid infections (referred to as bloodstream infect

Spontaneous ulcerative keratitis in immunocompromised patients.

We studied the occurrence of ulcerative keratitis in five eyes of four patients who were examined at the University of Maryland Hospital ophthalmology clinic over a 12-month period. All were young women who were intravenous drug abusers, with no known predisposing factors for ulcerative keratitis. Two patients had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), one was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive, and the fourth refused HIV testing. One had a corneoscleral limbus to corneoscleral limbus keratitis; three had inferiorly located corneal ulcers (bilateral in one patient with AIDS). Corn

A case of imported paracoccidioidomycosis: an awkward infection in The Netherlands.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is an important endemic mycosis in South America. In Europe the disease is very rare and only found as infections in travelers to Latin America. We report here the first case encountered in the Netherlands for which the appropriate diagnosis was not attained for several months. A Dutch 60-year-old man presented with a painful ulceration in the buccal mandibular vestibular mucosa of three months duration. While his medical history was uneventful, he had worked, until 8 years prior to his presentation, as a carpenter for 25 years in the jungles of Peru and Ecuador. An aber

[Diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic guidelines in patients with atopic dermatitis. Position paper by the task force of the National Specialists on Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology].

Treatment modalities of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are dependent on patient age, on the intensity of both skin symptoms and subjective signs of the disease i.e. itch and sleep disturbances, on the body surface involved with lesions, as well as on the type of sensitizing allergens. The characteristic of these allergens is crucial to start prophylaxis and to make decision about specific immunotherapy. In asymptomatic period of the disease the most important factor is to prevent dryness of the skin using emollients, which reconstruct integrity and continuity of stratum corneum. This pro

Aspergillus mastoiditis, presenting with unexplained progressive otalgia, in an immunocompetent (older) patient.

Aspergillus mastoiditis and skull-base osteomyelitis are extremely rare, even in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of an 81-year-old immunocompetent man, who underwent a mastoidectomy because of unexplained, progressive otalgia in spite of a noninflamed and air-containing middle-ear space. Histopathology yielded Aspergillus fumigatus. When confronted with otitis with an unexpected clinical course a high index of suspicion is required to facilitate early diagnosis and appropriate therapy of a potential lethal Aspergillus infection, even in immunocompetent patients. This seems to be m

Topical treatment of pulmonary aspergilloma by antifungals. Relationship between duration of the disease and efficacy of therapy.

Twelve patients with aspergilloma were treated with intracavitary or endobronchial administration of antifungals. Patients with successful therapy had significantly shorter mean duration of the disease course (3.6 months) than the less effective group (44.4 months, p < 0.01). Minimal inhibitory concentrations of antifungal agents against isolated strains of aspergilli were considerably lower than estimated intracavitary concentrations of the antifungals. A pathologic examination suggested that the old mycetoma was for the most part comprised of dead mycelial cells, against which antifungal age

Effective treatment of tinea corporis due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes with combined isoconazole nitrate and diflucortolone valerate therapy.

Trichophyton mentagrophytes is the dermatophyte species most commonly reported in cases of guinea pig-associated dermatophytosis (or guinea pig fungus) a condition that more often affects children than adults. In this case, a 13-year-old girl with recent direct contact with guinea pigs presented with a previously undertreated inflammatory skin lesion on the left side of her upper body, which was positive both for Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The condition was subsequently diagnosed as tinea corporis due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes with concomitant bacterial in

Steroid acne vs. Pityrosporum folliculitis: the incidence of Pityrosporum ovale and the effect of antifungal drugs in steroid acne.

BACKGROUND: Steroid acne is a folliculitis that can result from systemic or topical administration of steroid, and has been described as showing a similar clinical picture to Pityrosporum folliculitis, but there have been few reports about the incidence of Pityrosporum ovale and the effect of antimycotic drugs in steroid acne and other acneiform eruptions. Our purpose was to describe the association between steroid acne and P. ovale, and to confirm the superior efficacy of oral antifungal drugs over anti-acne drugs in the treatment of steroid acne. METHODS: The history, clinical features dire

Sequential serological responses to Aspergillus fumigatus in patients with cystic fibrosis. Use of antigen 'stretching' to delineate IgG and IgE activity.

Immunogens from Aspergillus fumigatus were fractionated on the basis of molecular weight. Nine fractions ranging from 900 to 10 kDa were used in ELISA and in a radioallergosorbent test (RAST) with sera from cases of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with ABPA or other Aspergillus involvement and compared with control subjects. The profile of IgG reactivity to the nine fractions did not vary substantially for all Aspergillus-involved groups producing peaks at greater than 900 kD and 170 kD whereas the profile for control subjects had a peak at

Vulvovaginal candidiasis among Yemeni women: prevalence of Candida species, biofilm formation rates, antifungal susceptibility patterns, and biofilm-associated genes ALS1 and HWP1.

BACKGROUND: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a common fungal infection in women, primarily caused by Candida species. Biofilm formation is a key virulence factor contributing to pathogenicity and antifungal resistance. This study aimed to identify Candida species, evaluate antifungal susceptibility, quantify biofilm formation, and detect virulence gene markers (ALS1 and HWP1) in vaginal isolates from women with VVC. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to June 2024 among 400 women attending obstetrics and gynecology clinics in Sana'a City. Vaginal swabs were coll

Pediatric Lymphangioma of the Tongue, From Diagnosis to Surgery: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphangioma is a rare pediatric benign lesion caused by a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. Most often (50%-70%) lymphatic malformations affect skin and subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck region, rarely the oral cavity. Intraoral lymphatic malformation occurs most commonly on the dorsum of the tongue, followed by the palate, buccal mucosa, gums, and lips. Lymphatic malformations are clinically and radiologically classified into three types, according to the cystic size: microcystic (< 1 cm), macrocystic (> 1 cm), and mixed. Differential diagnoses for lingual

Non-synonymous ERG11 mutations in M. restricta and M. arunalokei: impact on azole susceptibility.

UNLABELLED: Malassezia are commensal lipid-dependent yeasts and opportunistic pathogens that cause superficial mycoses and systemic infection. Azole antifungals target cell wall ergosterol synthesis and are the first line of antifungal treatment. ERG11 gene mutations and overexpression are major mechanisms conferring azole resistance and resulting in antifungal therapy failure. Malassezia restricta is found ubiquitously on healthy and diseased skin, with azole-resistant isolates described. Malassezia arunalokei is a relatively new, closely related common skin species. Ketoconazole and itracona

Catalytic Differences between Flavohemoglobins of Giardia intestinalis and E. coli.

The sole known heme enzyme of the parasitic protist Giardia intestinalis is a flavohemoglobin (gFlHb) that acts as a nitric oxide dioxygenase (NOD) and protects the organism from the free radical nitric oxide. To learn more about the properties of this enzyme, we measured its nitric oxide dioxygenase, NADH oxidase, and cytochrome c reductase activities and compared these to the activities of the E. coli flavohemoglobin (Hmp). The turnover number for the NOD activity of gFlHb (23 s-1) is about two-thirds of that of Hmp (34 s-1) at pH 6.5 and 37 °C. The two enzymes differ in their sensitivity to
