Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Japan.

Progress in public sanitation over the past four decades has greatly decreased the prevalence of soil-transmitted gastrointestinal parasites in Japan. Although food-borne zoonotic parasites also show a similar trend, there continues to be a steady flow of patients infected with the latter parasites. This stems from the traditional popularity among the Japanese of eating raw food, coupled with an increasing fondness for rare delicacies, overseas travel, and consumption of exotic food. These factors have given rise to many reports of anisakiasis, angiostrongyliasis, trichinellosis, capillariasis

Excretory-secretory products secreted by Paragonimus westermani delay the spontaneous cell death of human eosinophils through autocrine production of GM-CSF.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophils play important roles in tissue inflammatory responses associated with helminth infections. Excretory-secretory products (ESP) produced by tissue-invasive helminths contain a large quantity of proteolytic enzymes that can modulate the host's immune responses. However, little is known regarding the roles of worm-derived products that are responsible for eosinophilic inflammatory responses in helminth infections. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we investigated whether ESP produced by Paragonimus westermani, which cause pulmonary or extrapulmonary paragonimiasis in human

Analysis of Clonorchis sinensis antigens and diagnosis of clonorchiasis using monoclonal antibodies.

Clonorchis sinensis is a common parasite of man in Korea. Researches on the specific antigens of C. sinensis would be valuable not only because those elucidate the molecular characteristics of this fluke but also because it is applicable to immunodiagnosis. Although many monoclonal antibodies have been used in the field of parasite immunology, few articles on monoclonal antibodies against C. sinensis have been published so far. The aim of this study was to analyze C. sinensis antigens recognized by monoclonal antibodies, and to set up ELISA-inhibition test using C. sinensis specific monoclonal

Mucocutaneous manifestations of helminth infections: Nematodes.

In the 21st century, despite increased globalization through international travel for business, medical volunteerism, pleasure, and immigration/refugees into the United States, there is little published in the dermatology literature regarding the cutaneous manifestations of helminth infections. Approximately 17% of travelers seek medical care because of cutaneous disorders, many related to infectious etiologies. This review will focus on the cutaneous manifestations of helminth infections and is divided into 2 parts: part I focuses on nematode infections, and part II focuses on trematode and c

Update on eosinophilic meningoencephalitis and its clinical relevance.

Eosinophilic meningoencephalitis is caused by a variety of helminthic infections. These worm-specific infections are named after the causative worm genera, the most common being angiostrongyliasis, gnathostomiasis, toxocariasis, cysticercosis, schistosomiasis, baylisascariasis, and paragonimiasis. Worm parasites enter an organism through ingestion of contaminated water or an intermediate host and can eventually affect the central nervous system (CNS). These infections are potentially serious events leading to sequelae or death, and diagnosis depends on currently limited molecular methods. Iden

Food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the Philippines.

A number of food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been recorded in the Philippines and include echinostomiasis, artyfechinostomosis, fascioliasis, heterophydiasis, carneophallosis, clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, taeniasis, echinococcosis/hydatidosis, diphyllobothriosis/spirometrosis and sparganosis, intestinal capillariasis, gnathostomiasis, angiostrongylosis, toxoplasmosis and sarcosporidiosis. Some are now rarely observed while others continue to be public health problems. Many are endemic in certain areas of the Philippines because of the habit of consuming raw or partly cooked fish, snails, c

Characterization and localization of Paragonimus westermani antigen stimulating antibody formation in both the infected cat and rat.

Applicability of the adult Paragonimus westermani antigen for detection of anti-immature P. westermani antibodies in experimentally infected rats, a paratenic host of this lung fluke, was examined. The serum antibodies of the cats and rats infected with P. westermani metacercariae were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with the adult-fluke antigen. The ELISA titers of serum samples of the rats infected with only immature flukes were as high as those of the cats infected with adult flukes. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the immunoblotting techn

Detection of humoral immune response to Gnathostoma spinigerum in mice.

The humoral immune response to early third stage larvae (EL3) and advanced third stage larvae (AL3) of Gnathostoma spinigerum infection was studied in mice by Ouchterlony gel diffusion technique. The antibodies was detected at week 3 in mice infected with EL3 and remained up to week 10 after infection. Highest positive sample of sera were demonstrated at week 4 to week 7. Similar results were obtained from AL3 infected sera except the antibodies was found and disappeared earlier (week 2 to week 6). G. spinigerum larvae recovery from mice in both groups showed that the number of advanced third

[Histopathological alterations in rhesus monkeys after experimental infections with African lung flukes (Paragonimus africanus and P. uterobilateralis) (author's transl)].

Histopathological observations in monkeys experimentally infected with African lung flukes are reported. The observations were made on 3 Rhesus monkeys, infected with Paragonimus africanus from West-Cameroon, and on 5 Rhesus monkeys, infected with P. uterobilateralis from Eastern Nigeria. For comparison, the lung of a naturally infected Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) was included in the study. The following lesions were found: formation of parasite cavernae, intense infiltration of the cavern wall with plasma cells; formation of egg granulomata in the lung tissue with intense plasma cell infil

Neuroparasitic infections: imaging features and diagnostic algorithms.

Neuroparasitic infections are caused by a variety of organisms that affect the central nervous system (CNS). Given the increasing rates of international travel, climate change, and immunosuppression, neuroparasitic diseases represent a major global health concern. Accurate diagnosis relies on non-invasive medical imaging combined with exposure history and laboratory testing. Timely institution of appropriate therapy can drastically improve patient outcomes. This article represents an international collaboration of radiologists on multiple continents to illustrate exemplary radiologic cases and

Case Report: Simultaneous Paragonimus skrjabini infection in twin girls with spontaneous emergence of a juvenile worm from the eyelid of the elder sister.

We reported a rare case of paragonimiasis occurring in twin sisters who had eaten raw crabs 7 months ago. The elder sister complained of eyelid swelling and migratory lumps, while the younger sister was asymptomatic. Laboratory tests showed eosinophilia and elevated levels of inflammatory indicators in the two sisters. The brain MRI of the elder twin showed hyperintensity in the frontal lobe, suggesting cerebral hemorrhage. The chest CT image of the twins showed pulmonary involvement. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serum antibody test and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (

A seroepidemiological survey for toxocariasis in apparently healthy residents in Gangwon-do, Korea.

We investigated the sero-prevalence of toxocariasis among healthy Korean adults in 1999. A total of 314 sera from normal inhabitants in Whachon-gun, Gangwondo, Korea was examined for specific antibody levels against excretory-secretory products of second stage larvae of Toxocara (TES). The presence of cross-reactions with other helminthiases such as cysticercosis, paragonimiasis, sparganosis or clonorchiasis was also checked by specific IgG ELISA. Sera showing positive reaction against TES were also tested by IgG immunoblot and by IgE ELISA. Out of 314 subjects, 16 was found to be positive by

Exudative pleural effusion caused by lung fluke infection: A practical diagnostic approach.

OBJECTIVES: Pleural effusion caused by lung fluke is a rare etiology of exudative pleural effusion (EPE), which is often misdiagnosed or delayed. We aim to summarize the diagnosis and treatment course of EPE caused by lung fluke infection and put forward a practical diagnosis approach. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the diagnosis and treatment of 14 cases of EPE caused by lung fluke infection diagnosed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum antibodies or egg detection. RESULTS: All patients (100%) with an absolute count of eosinophils in peripheral blood exceeded 0.5 × 109/l, an

Eosinophilic Meningitis Due to Infection With Paragonimus kellicotti.

Paragonimus kellicotti is an emerging pathogen in the United States with 19 previously reported cases, most in Missouri. Pulmonary symptoms with eosinophilia are most common, though 1 case did involve the central nervous system with few symptoms. We describe the first 2 cases of eosinophilic meningitis due to Paragonimus kellicotti.

[Paragonimus westermani infection confirmed by the detection of Paragonimus ova in the sputum with bilateral pleural effusion].

A 28-year-old man had a 1-year history of hemoptysis. Consequently, he underwent a medical examination. A right pleural effusion, left hydropneumothorax, and multiple pulmonary nodular shadows were found on chest radiography. During a detailed interview, he reported that the hemoptysis began after eating "kejang" (a raw crab preparation) with a friend a year previously. His peripheral blood eosinophil count and serum IgE level were elevated. In addition, ova were detected in the sputum and bilateral pleural effusion. Morphological examination of the ova and immunoserological examination led to

[A investigation on the types of chromosomes and epidemiology of Paragonimus westermanni in Huadian city of Jilin Province].

An investigation on the types of chromosomes and epidemiology of Paragomanni westermanni in five Villages and towns of Huadian city was carried out. The data showed that the infection rate of crayfish, the first intermediate host, was 100% and the infectiosities varied from 99 to 160/per crayfish in the five areas. The genetic patterns of all the cysticercus, ovum and imagoes had been proved to be diploid by morphological and genetic studies. The infection rate of animal final host such as dogs and cats reached as highly as 94.3%, and all the infected animals presented typical pathological cha

Prevalence of Paragonimus westermani in some Ulchin school children.

In order to estimate the prevalence of Paragonimus westermani among the school children in Ulchin county, Kyungpook Province, five primary schools were selected for sampling. The children were first examined using an intradermal test with Paragonimus antigen, Lot No. 890417, and then examined for Paragonimus eggs from sputa and stools collected from the intradermal-positive cases. In a total of 382 children examined, 53 cases or 13.9 percent revealed positive reactions for Paragonimus westermani. The sex specific rate of infection was a little higher in boys than in girls. The age specific rat
