The Relationship Between Obesity and Cancer: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and the Effect of Obesity Treatment on Cancer.

There is growing evidence relating to the risk of cancer in people with obesity. Obesity is already established as one of the strongest predisposing factors to cancer, and 'obesity-related' cancers have been defined in previous studies. In this review article, we examine the epidemiological relationship and describe the potential pathophysiological mechanisms that underpin the association between obesity and cancer. These include hormonal and growth factors that are in abundance in persons living with obesity and thereby increase cancer risk. Additionally, the increased disposition towards chr

Acute Kidney Injury in the Patient with Cancer.

Over the last three decades, advancements in the diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care of patients with cancer have significantly improved their overall survival. However, these advancements have also led to a higher rate of cancer-related complications. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are highly prevalent in patients with cancer, and they are associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. This bidirectional interplay between cancer and kidney, termed "the kidney-cancer connection" has become a very active area of research. This review aims to provide

The neurological adverse events of immune check point inhibitors in the treatment of cancer.

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer treatment with significant improvements in survival rates. With the increase in ICI use in the clinical setting, several case reports and series have described neurological adverse events associated with it. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the incidence of neurological adverse events among ICI clinical trials.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) on November 25, 2025, using ICI and clinical trial as keywords along with

Hypercalcemia in Cancer: Causes, Effects, and Treatment Strategies.

Calcium plays central roles in numerous biological processes, thereby, its levels in the blood are under strict control to maintain homeostatic balance and enable the proper functioning of living organisms. The regulatory mechanisms ensuring this balance can be affected by pathologies such as cancer, and as a result, hyper- or hypocalcemia can occur. These states, characterized by elevated or decreased calcium blood levels, respectively, have a significant effect on general homeostasis. This article focuses on a particular form of calcium metabolism disorder, which is hypercalcemia in neoplasm

Thrombotic microangiopathy in oncology - a review.

Thrombotic microangiopathy is a syndrome triggered by a wide spectrum of situations, some of which are specific to the Oncology setting. It is characterized by a Coombs-negative microangiopathic haemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and organ injury, with characteristic pathological features, resulting from platelet microvascular occlusion. TMA is rare and its cancer-related subset even more so. TMA triggered by drugs is the most common within this group, including classic chemotherapy and the latest targeted therapies. The neoplastic disease itself and hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation co

Percutaneous endoscopic cecostomy for management of Ogilvie's syndrome: a case series and literature review with an update on current guidelines (with video).

IntroductionPercutaneous endoscopic cecostomy (PEC) is a viable treatment option for patients with persistent or recurrent acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO; Ogilvie's syndrome). It should be generally considered in patients that are refractory to pharmacologic and endoscopic decompression, especially those not amenable to surgical intervention due to an increased perioperative risk. Physicians are rather unfamiliar with this approach given the limited number of reports in the literature and paucity of guideline resources, although guidelines concerning ACPO and covering the role of endos

Urgent and emergent radiotherapy for hematologic malignancies of the central nervous system: a review of the literature and practical approach.

IntroductionHematologic malignancies, including leukemias, lymphomas, and myeloma, can involve the central nervous system (CNS) at the time of diagnosis or later in relapse. CNS involvement can lead to acute neurologic symptoms or signs that need prompt evaluation and treatment. Radiotherapy (RT) can lead to quick disease response, but how it can best be incorporated early into multi-modality treatment in the urgent clinical setting is often unclear.MethodsHere, we outline a practical approach to planning and incorporating urgent RT in patients with hematologic malignancies involving the CNS.

Understanding Autoimmunity: Mechanisms, Predisposing Factors, and Cytokine Therapies.

Autoimmunity refers to an organism's immune response against its own healthy cells, tissues, or components, potentially leading to irreversible damage to vital organs. Central and peripheral tolerance mechanisms play crucial roles in preventing autoimmunity by eliminating self-reactive T and B cells. The disruption of immunological tolerance, characterized by the failure of these mechanisms, results in the aberrant activation of autoreactive lymphocytes that target self-tissues, culminating in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. Genetic predispositions, environmental exposures, and immun

Outcome Prediction of Hematologic Malignancy in Critically Sick People.

People with hematologic malignancies (HM) frequently postulate intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization due to organ damage caused by the disease process or treatment-related consequences. This study is aimed at looking at mortality and sign factors in adult patients with hematologic malignancy (HM) who have been hospitalized in the ICU. Death was one quality indicator; researchers used a machine learning approach to find determinants of death. As per the study, there have been 206 patients hospitalized in the ICU (mean age: 51.3 ± 13.6 years; 60% male). The average length of stay was three d

Neurological complications of current and emerging CAR-T cell therapies.

Harnessing an individual patient's immune system to enhance anti-tumor responses has been a long-standing goal in oncology. Multiple immune modulating or immune enhancing therapies have been FDA approved or are under development, utilizing varying strategies to engage the patient's own immune system. One such therapy is chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CAR-T), in which T-cells are genetically engineered to target specific antigens present on tumor cells. Multiple CAR-T products are currently approved for clinical use, with impressive and durable responses seen in hematologic cancers.

Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Epidemiology, Etiology and Management.

The spinal cord is a conduit within the central nervous system (CNS) that provides ongoing communication between the brain and the rest of the body, conveying complex sensory and motor information necessary for safety, movement, reflexes, and optimization of autonomic function. After a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), supraspinal influences on the peripheral nervous system and autonomic nervous system (ANS) are disrupted, leading to spastic paralysis, sympathetic blunting, and parasympathetic dominance, resulting in cardiac dysrhythmias, systemic hypotension, bronchoconstriction, copious re

Incidence and temporal trends of depression and anxiety following cancer diagnosis in Japan: Insights from the LIFE study.

Depression and anxiety are common among cancer patients and are associated with poorer treatment adherence, quality of life, and survival outcomes. While the prevalence of these conditions has been widely reported, less is known about their incidence and temporal trends. This study aimed to clarify the incidence and temporal patterns of depression and anxiety following cancer diagnosis using claims data from 14 Japanese municipalities. The study cohort comprised 22,863 newly diagnosed cancer patients from April 2018 to March 2021. During a follow-up period of up to 24 months after diagnosis, w

Guideline "diagnosis and non interventional therapy of neuropathic pain" of the German Society of Neurology (deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie).

2019 the DGN (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurology) published a new guideline on the diagnosis and non-interventional therapy of neuropathic pain of any etiology excluding trigeminal neuralgia and CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome). Neuropathic pain occurs after lesion or damage of the somatosensory system. Besides clinical examination several diagnostic procedures are recommended to assess the function of nociceptive A-delta and C-Fibers (skin biopsy, quantitative sensory testing, Laser-evoked potentials, Pain-evoked potentials, corneal confocal microscopy, axon reflex testing). Effects of glucocorticoid replacement therapy in patients with pituitary disease: A new perspective for personalized replacement therapy.

Secondary adrenal insufficiency (SAI) is an endocrine disorder due to impaired secretion of ACTH resulting from any disease affecting the pituitary gland. Glucocorticoid replacement therapy is mandatory to ensure patient survival, haemodynamic stability, and quality of life. In fact, a correct dose adjustement is mandatory due to the fact that inappropriately low doses expose patients to hypoadrenal crisis, while inappropriately high doses contribute to glucose metabolic and cardiovascular deterioration. This review analyses the current evidence from available publications on the epidemiology
