Genetic architecture and adaptive significance of the selfing syndrome in Capsella.

The transition from outcrossing to predominant self-fertilization is one of the most common evolutionary transitions in flowering plants. This shift is often accompanied by a suite of changes in floral and reproductive characters termed the selfing syndrome. Here, we characterize the genetic architecture and evolutionary forces underlying evolution of the selfing syndrome in Capsella rubella following its recent divergence from the outcrossing ancestor C. grandiflora. We conduct genotyping by multiplexed shotgun sequencing and map floral and reproductive traits in a large (N= 550) F2 populatio

Advanced Generation Seed Orchard of Abies alba Mill. in Romania Combining Genetic Gain and Diversity.

The genetic parameters at 6, 9 and 12 years were studied in two progeny trials (one half-sib and one full-sib) of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Romania, in order to establish an appropriate breeding strategy for advancing second-generation seed orchards. The half-sib trial (HS) consists of 60 open-pollinated families of plus trees from four first-generation seed orchards, while the full-sib trial (FS) consists of 51 half-diallel crosses of 11 plus trees from one seed orchard. Tree height and diameter were found to be under moderate to strong genetic control at both the family and individual

Chemical Stimulants and Stressors Impact the Outcome of Virus Infection and Immune Gene Expression in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera).

Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) are ecologically, agriculturally, and economically important plant pollinators. High average annual losses of honey bee colonies in the US have been partially attributed to agrochemical exposure and virus infections. To examine the potential negative synergistic impacts of agrochemical exposure and virus infection, as well as the potential promise of phytochemicals to ameliorate the impact of pathogenic infections on honey bees, we infected bees with a panel of viruses (i.e., Flock House virus, deformed wing virus, or Sindbis virus) and exposed to one of thr

Optimization of temperature and parental effects on seed germination and seedling growth in pistachio varieties.

INTRODUCTION: Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is a temperate and semi-arid tree crop of growing economic importance worldwide, yet new cultivar development is needed to enhance adaptation to diverse growing environments. Optimizing seed germination and early seedling growth is essential for accelerating breeding programs in long-generation tree crops such as pistachio. This study aimed to (i) determine the optimal temperature for seed germination and (ii) evaluate the effects of female parent, field origin, and seed weight on germination, seed emergence and seedling performance. METHODS: Seed fr

Target to Non-Target: Exploring Indoxacarb Toxicity and Resistance.

Indoxacarb is a widely used oxadiazine insecticide that has a unique pro-insecticidal mode of action. It functions by metabolic activation to a sodium channel-blocking metabolite, leading to disruption of neuronal signalling and insect mortality. However, increasing evidence highlights that, beyond its target specificity, indoxacarb exerts diverse biological and environmental effects. This review provides an integrated framework linking the physicochemical properties and mode of action of indoxacarb with its toxicity, resistance development, environmental transformation and degradation while i

Cytochemical and comparative transcriptome analyses elucidate the formation and ecological adaptation of three types of pollen coat in Zingiberaceae.

BACKGROUND: The pollen ornate surface of flowering plants has long fascinated and puzzled evolutionary biologists for their variety. Each pollen grain is contained within a pollen wall consisting of intine and exine, over which the lipoid pollen coat lies. The cytology and molecular biology of the development of the intine and exine components of the pollen wall are relatively well characterised. However, little is known about the pollen coat, which confers species specificity. We demonstrate three types of pollen coat in Zingiberaceae, a mucilage-like pollen coat and a gum-like pollen coat, a

Antifungal activity of different essential oils against Malassezia pathogenic species.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Plants produce essential oils in response to physiological stresses, pathogen attacks and ecological factors. Nowadays, they are recognized as defence compounds and attractors of pollinators. Essential oils have been traditionally used in the past years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. In recent times due to their well-documented antimicrobial activities, essential oils have consolidated their use in raw and processed food preservation, health and clinical uses. AIMS OF THE REVIEW: The potential activity of essential oils against the large

Land birds on atolls: diversity, origin, and function.

Oceanic islands are global hotspots of avian biodiversity and endemism. Their isolation and distinct environmental conditions have uniquely shaped the evolutionary trajectories of island birds, while, in turn, land bird communities have become critical providers of ecological functions to island ecosystems. However, these processes and dynamics have been studied almost exclusively on large volcanic islands. Coral atolls - the other principal type of oceanic island - remain largely absent from ecological research on island bird diversity, evolution, and functioning. This omission constitutes a

Using brief reflections to capture and evaluate end-user engagement: a case example using the COMPASS study.

BACKGROUND: Use of participatory research methods is increasing in research trials. Once partnerships are established with end-users, there is less guidance about processes research teams can use to successfully incorporate end-user feedback. The current study describes the use of a brief reflections process to systematically examine and evaluate the impact of end-user feedback on study conduct. METHODS: The Comparative Effectiveness of Trauma-Focused and Non-Trauma- Focused Treatment Strategies for PTSD among those with Co-Occurring SUD (COMPASS) study was a randomized controlled trial to de

Genetic diversity of Apis mellifera filamentous virus in bees sampled in the USA and Jamaica.

Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV) is a large filamentous virus with a ~500 kb double-stranded DNA genome identified in honeybees and a handful of other winged insects. Since its first identification almost 50 years ago, only a few nearly complete AmFV genomes have been sequenced. Genomic regions of AmFV have been identified using gene-specific primers as part of the viral screening surveys for honeybee viruses. Here, we assembled a complete AmFV genome from honeybees from the USA which shares 94.4-96.4% intergenomic similarity with previously published AmFV genomes. A distinct variation

A toxicogenomics approach reveals characteristics supporting the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) safety profile of the butenolide insecticide flupyradifurone.

Flupyradifurone, a novel butenolide insecticide, selectively targets insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), comparable to structurally different insecticidal chemotypes such as neonicotinoids and sulfoximines. However, flupyradifurone was shown in acute toxicity tests to be several orders of magnitude less toxic to western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) than many other insecticides targeting insect nAChRs. The underlying reasons for this difference in toxicity remains unknown and were investigated here. Pharmacokinetic studies after contact application of [14C]flupyradifurone to hon

Identification and evaluation of volatile organic compounds evolved during solarization with almond hull and shell amendments.

Biosolarization is a fumigation alternative that combines solarization with organic amendments to suppress pests and pathogens in agricultural soils. The generation of volatile biopesticides in the soil, stemming from biodegradation of carbon-rich amendments, contributes to pest inactivation. The purpose of this study was to (1) profile volatiles that may contribute to pest control under field conditions and (2) measure volatile compounds that may present nuisance or exposure risks for humans near biosolarized fields where larger-scale anaerobic degradation of residues occurs. Biosolarization

The ga3ox1b mutation reveals the crosstalk between gibberellin and other phytohormones in controlling the growth and development of female flowers in Cucurbita pepo.

Cucurbita pepo is a monoecious species with female and male unisexual flowers on the same plant. The large size of its flowers makes this species a model for studying the regulation of sex determination and sex-associated developmental traits. Because male flowers appear at earlier stages of plant development than female flowers, the plant has evolved a system in which female flowers grow and open much faster than male flowers in order to synchronize male and female flowering for proper pollination and fertilization. In this paper, we show that this differential growth of female and male flowe

Standardization of an ash (Fraxinus excelsior) pollen allergen extract.

BACKGROUND: Ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is the main representative of the Oleaceae family in temperate zones. Diagnosis of ash pollen allergy is made difficult due to (1) an overlapping pollinization period with Betulaceae, (2) non-inclusion in current diagnostic assays, and (3) some cross- reactivity with minor allergens from Betulaceae. The aim of this study was to calibrate an ash pollen in-house reference preparation (IHRP) in allergic patients in order to produce standardized products for diagnosis and immunotherapy purposes. METHODS: Ash pollen IHRP was extracted, ultrafiltered and fr

Fueling the fall migration of the monarch butterfly.

Monarch butterflies in eastern North America accumulate lipids during their fall migration to central Mexico, and use them as their energy source during a 5 month overwintering period. When and where along their migratory journey the butterflies accumulate these lipids has implications for the importance of fall nectar sources in North America. We analyzed the lipid content of 765 summer breeding and fall migrant monarch butterflies collected at 1 nectaring site in central Virginia over 4 years (1998-2001), and compared them with 16 additional published and unpublished datasets from other site

An allergen from Olea europaea pollen (Ole e 7) is associated with plant-derived food anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Several cross-reacting proteins have been identified as responsible of the co-occurrence of pollinosis and plant-derived food allergy. This association has been mainly described in the birch-apple syndrome but other pollens such as Olea europaea and other fruits may also contain homologous proteins. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between sensitization to allergens of Olea europaea pollen and confirmed plant-derived food allergy, in addition to investigate if any pattern of clinical hypersensitivity of food allergy reaction (oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or anaphylaxis) and/
