OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms on skeletal morphologies of orthodontic patients with TMJ disc displacement (DD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 197 women seeking orthodontic treatment. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the presence of TMJ symptoms: the presence and absence of TMJ symptoms. Each group was sub-divided into three groups based on magnetic resonance images of bilateral TMJs: bilateral normal disc position (BN), bilateral disc displacement with reduction (DDR) and bilater

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary disorder that affects ectodermal structures. The main clinical oral manifestations of ED include oligodontia and deficient alveolar ridges. This case report presents the oral rehabilitation of a 15-year-old female patient who never received an accurate diagnosis or appropriate dental care. Treatment included a combination of surgical intervention, a maxillary tooth-supported fixed detachable telescopic prosthesis, and an implant-supported mandibular fixed partial denture. The results showed a significant improvement in the esthetics, function, and psyc

A 13-year-old sought treatment for a severely compromised maxillary left central incisor and an impacted fully developed left canine. Extraction of both teeth became necessary. As the key component of the revised comprehensive treatment plan, the right maxillary central incisor was moved into the position of the left central incisor. All other maxillary teeth were moved mesially to close any gaps. Active orthodontic treatment was completed after 34 months. Frenectomy, minor periodontal surgeries, and bonded lingual retainers were used to improve aesthetics and stabilize the tooth positions. Th

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), a broad term that describes a clinically heterogeneous group of arthritides of unknown cause, begins before 16 years of age. The hallmark feature of JIA is chronic inflammation of the joints, but the term encompasses several disease categories. The cause of JIA is still poorly understood and none of the available drugs for JIA can cure the disease. However, the prognosis has greatly improved as a result of progress in disease classification and management. The dental practitioner should be familiar with the symptoms and oral manifestations of JIA to help ma

OBJECTIVE: Kallmann's syndrome is characterized by the association of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia or hyposmia. The principal endocrine defect of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is a failure to secrete luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), resulting in underdevelopment of the pituitary gonadotropes and an inability to synthesize and release luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. The purpose of the present investigation was to describe the dentition and the craniofacial morphology in patients diagnosed with Kallmann's syndrome.
DESIGN: The sample consisted of

A concensus conference on the timing of facial osteotomies was held in Jönköping, Sweden. Seven teams consisting of a maxillofacial surgeon and an orthodontist representing five countries discussed treatment planning for young patients with maxillomandibular deformities with special emphasis on timing. Patients with severe syndromic facial deformities were not considered. Consensus was reached that for most deformities it is best advised to wait until growth has ceased, as determined by longitudinal cephalometric data. This rule is less tight for Angle Class II than for Class III cases. For as

INTRODUCTION: Interceptive treatment of Class II, Division 1 malocclusion is a challenge orthodontists commonly face due to the different growth patterns they come across and the different treatment strategies they have available.
OBJECTIVE: To report five cases of interceptive orthodontics performed with the aid of Klammt's elastic open activator (KEOA) to treat Class II, Division 1 malocclusion.
METHODS: Treatment comprehends one or two phases; and the use of functional orthopedic appliances, whenever properly recommended, is able to minimize dentoskeletal discrepancies with consequent imp

This case report describes a novel method of combining lingual appliances and lingual arches to control horizontal problems. The patient, who was 25 years of age at her first visit to our hospital with a chief complaint of crooked anterior teeth, was diagnosed with skeletal Class II and Angle Class II malocclusion with anterior deep bite, lateral open bite, premolar crossbite, and severe crowding in both arches. She was treated with premolar extractions and temporary anchorage devices. Conventionally, it is ideal to use labial brackets simultaneously with appliances, such as a lingual arch, a

This study was undertaken to determine whether angles SNA and ANB genuinely represent both the degree of maxillary prognathism and the intermaxillary relationship in natural head position (NHP). Pearson's r correlation coefficients were used to assess the associations between these angles, and variables based on NHP and extracranial reference lines. A large sample (n = 106) was used, comprising subjects with a variety of facial patterns. This was also divided into subgroups comprising subjects with similar facial configurations, determined by natural head position parameters. For the subgroups

A case of facial duplication with its surgical correction in childhood and the consequences on facial growth is reported. It is a unique case in the duration of observation. The following structures were fully duplicated: the nose, the premaxilla, the cribriform plate, the crista galli. In addition there was an enormous facial cleft including lip, alveolus and palate. Additionally there were two rudimentary eye sockets, eyes, and two supplementary eyebrows. The monstrous hypertelorism with the facial duplication was corrected at the age of ten. The surgical procedure is described and the posto
