Word recognition for temporally and spectrally distorted materials: the effects of age and hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of Experiment 1 was to measure word recognition in younger adults with normal hearing when speech or babble was temporally or spectrally distorted. In Experiment 2, older listeners with near-normal hearing and with hearing loss (for pure tones) were tested to evaluate their susceptibility to changes in speech level and distortion types. The results across groups and listening conditions were compared to assess the extent to which the effects of the distortions on word recognition resembled the effects of age-related differences in auditory processing or pure-tone hearin

Afferents from vocal motor and respiratory effectors are recruited during vocal production in juvenile songbirds.

Learned behaviors require coordination of diverse sensory inputs with motivational and motor systems. Although mechanisms underlying vocal learning in songbirds have focused primarily on auditory inputs, it is likely that sensory inputs from vocal effectors also provide essential feedback. We investigated the role of somatosensory and respiratory inputs from vocal effectors of juvenile zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during the stage of sensorimotor integration when they are learning to imitate a previously memorized tutor song. We report that song production induced expression of the imme

Level-dependent changes in detection of temporal gaps in noise markers by adults with normal and impaired hearing.

Compression in the basilar-membrane input-output response flattens the temporal envelope of a fluctuating signal when more gain is applied to lower level than higher level temporal components. As a result, level-dependent changes in gap detection for signals with different depths of envelope fluctuation and for subjects with normal and impaired hearing may reveal effects of compression. To test these assumptions, gap detection with and without a broadband noise was measured with 1, 000-Hz-wide (flatter) and 50-Hz-wide (fluctuating) noise markers as a function of marker level. As marker level i

Phonovibrogram visualization of entire vocal fold dynamics.

OBJECTIVES: High-speed (HS) video recordings are the up-to-date method for visualizing irregular vocal fold vibrations. However, perceptive evaluation during offline replay is time consuming and shows high inter-rater variability. METHOD: A visualization procedure is presented that extracts vocal fold vibrations from HS videos and transfers the motion information into a set of three phonovibrogram (PVG) images that make visual vocal fold displacements (PVG-0), velocities (PVG-1), and accelerations (PVG-2). RESULTS: The principles of PVG computation as well as their application to three clini

CO(2) laser posterior ventriculocordectomy for the treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

We reviewed our clinical experience between 1991 and 1997 concerning use of the CO(2) laser for posterior ventriculocordectomy (PVC) for the treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Pre- and postoperative functional evaluation was assessed in a prospective setting. In all, 41 patients (33 females and 8 males) underwent an endoscopic CO(2) laser PVC. Pre- and postoperative pulmonary function tests documented a significant statistical improvement in the parameters considered. Sixteen of 21 previously tracheostomized patients were decannulated within 15 months of operation. In no case was a p

MFCC Parameters of the Speech Signal: An Alternative to Formant-Based Instantaneous Vocal Tract Length Estimation.

On the one hand, the relationship between formant frequencies and vocal tract length (VTL) has been intensively studied over the years. On the other hand, the connection involving mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), which concisely codify the overall shape of a speaker's spectral envelope with just a few cepstral coefficients, and VTL has only been modestly analyzed, being worth of further investigation. Thus, based on different statistical models, this article explores the advantages and disadvantages of the latter approach, which is relatively novel, in contrast to the former which

Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index, Version 03.01, in French.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), version 03.01, is a tool for quantitative assessment of the overall severity of dysphonia. It is based on the recordings of a sustained vowel and part of a text read aloud. For the Dutch sample, 34 syllables must be read aloud to balance the duration of the two tasks. The first part of this study thus aimed to determine how many syllables of a commonly used text in the French-speaking part of Belgium should be used to achieve the same balance. The psychometric qualities of the AVQI have been confirmed by numerous publications in various lang

Gradual adaptation to auditory frequency mismatch.

What is the best way to help humans adapt to a distorted sensory input? Interest in this question is more than academic. The answer may help facilitate auditory learning by people who became deaf after learning language and later received a cochlear implant (a neural prosthesis that restores hearing through direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve). There is evidence that some cochlear implants (which provide information that is spectrally degraded to begin with) stimulate neurons with higher characteristic frequency than the acoustic frequency of the original stimulus. In other wor

The use of analogy in speech motor performance.

The acoustic correlates of pitch variation were examined in 40 participants who received analogy instructions or explicit instructions that required them to modulate their intonation during speech production. First, using focus group methodology, professional speech-language pathologists were asked to identify analogies that best described minimum pitch variation (monotone), moderate pitch variation (normal intonation), and maximum pitch variation (exaggerated intonation) in speech. The focus group established that an appropriate pitch variation metaphor may be related to imagery of "waves at

An autosomal dominant genetically heterogeneous variant of rolandic epilepsy and speech disorder.

We report a three generation pedigree with 11 of 22 affected with a variant form of rolandic epilepsy, speech impairment, oromotor apraxia, and cognitive deficit. The core features comprised nocturnal rolandic seizures, interictal centrotemporal spike waves with early age of onset and late age of offset. The transmission of the phenotype was consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance, with variable expressivity but no evidence of anticipation. We found evidence that the seizure and speech traits may be dissociated. No abnormalities were found by cytogenetic analysis. Linkage analysis exclu

An alternative diagnostic test for active Ménière's disease and cochlear hydrops using high-pass noise masked responses: the complex amplitude ratio.

We [Don et al.: Otol Neurotol 2005;26:711-722] previously demonstrated that patients diagnosed with an active case of Ménière's disease could be distinguished from non-Ménière's normal-hearing subjects by a special auditory brainstem response method involving clicks and ipsilateral high-pass masking pink noise. Specifically, auditory brainstem responses to clicks presented alone and clicks with masking noise high-pass filtered at 8, 4, 2, 1 and 0.5 kHz were recorded. It was shown that the level of masking noise sufficient to progressively mask the response to clicks in non-Ménière's normal-hea

Warming up improves speech production in patients with adult onset myotonic dystrophy.

UNLABELLED: This investigation was conducted to study whether warming up decreases myotonia (muscle stiffness) during speech production or causes adverse effects due to fatigue or exhaustion caused by intensive speech activity in patients with adult onset myotonic dystrophy. Thirty patients with adult onset myotonic dystrophy (MD) and ten healthy controls were examined, using a protocol that requires subjects, to speak continuously for at least 10 min. In MD patients, warming up led to an increase in speech rate and a decrease in speech variability without causing signs of fatigue or exhaustio

The effects of the amplitude distribution of equal energy exposures on noise-induced hearing loss: the kurtosis metric.

Seventeen groups of chinchillas with 11 to 16 animals/group (sigmaN = 207) were exposed for 5 days to either a Gaussian (G) noise or 1 of 16 different non-Gaussian (non-G) noises at 100 dB(A) SPL. All exposures had the same total energy and approximately the same flat spectrum but their statistical properties were varied to yield a series of exposure conditions that varied across a continuum from G through various non-G conditions to pure impact noise exposures. The non-G character of the noise was produced by inserting high level transients (impacts or noise bursts) into the otherwise G noise

Speech based transmission index for all: An intelligibility metric for variable hearing ability.

A method to measure the speech intelligibility in public address systems for normal hearing and hearing impaired persons is presented. The proposed metric is an extension of the speech based Speech Transmission Index to account for accurate perceptual masking and variable hearing ability: The sound excitation pattern generated at the ear is accurately computed using an auditory filter model, and its shapes depend on frequency, sound level, and hearing impairment. This extension yields a better prediction of the intensity of auditory masking which is used to rectify the modulation transfer func
