The Cancer Risk Associated with Residential Exposure to Soil Containing Radioactive Coal Combustion Residuals.

Coal combustion residuals (CCRs) are composed of various constituents, including radioactive materials. The objective of this study was to utilize methodology on radionuclide risk assessment from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to estimate the potential cancer risks associated with residential exposure to CCR-containing soil. We evaluated potential radionuclide exposure via soil ingestion, inhalation of soil particulates, and external exposure to ionizing radiation using published CCR radioactivity values for 232 Th, 228 Ra, 238 U, and 226 Ra from the Appalachia, Illinois, and Powder

Speciation and Complex Formation of Zirconium(IV) with Tc(VII) and Re(VII) in Liquid-Liquid Extraction Systems.

The formation of Tc-(VII)-Zr-(IV) species in nitric acid and their extraction in kerosene/tributyl phosphate (TBP) phases was studied. The technetium distribution coefficient (D Tc) was evaluated as a function of nitric acid concentration (1-7 M) and is in the range of 25-37, which is significantly higher compared to solutions that do not contain zirconium and confirms the synergism of their coextraction. Emphasis was placed on 1 M HNO3 solution, which is the initial concentration used in uranium extraction during spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The behavior of pertechnetate under these condi

Four-decade follow-up of a plutonium-contaminated puncture wound treated with Ca-DTPA.

Contaminated wounds are a common route of internal deposition of radionuclides for nuclear and radiation workers. They may result in significant doses to radiosensitive organs and tissues in an exposed individual's body. The United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries' whole-body donor (Case 0303) accidentally punctured his finger on equipment contaminated with plutonium nitrate. The wound was surgically excised and medically treated with intravenous injections of Ca-DTPA. A total of 16 g Ca-DTPA was administered in 18 treatments during the 2 months following the accident. Ninety-three u

Subcortical brain atrophy in Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a multisystem disorder that has affected a substantial number of veterans who served in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The brain is prominently affected, as manifested by the presence of neurological, cognitive and mood symptoms. Although brain dysfunction in GWI has been well documented (EBioMedicine 12:127-32, 2016), abnormalities in brain structure have been debated. Here we report a substantial (~10%) subcortical brain atrophy in GWI comprising mainly the brainstem, cerebellum and thalamus, and, to a lesser extent, basal ganglia, amygdala and diencephalon. The highest at

Adsorption and reaction of SO2 with a polycrystalline UO2 film: promotion of S-O bond cleavage by creation of O-defects and Na or Ca coadsorption.

To characterize UO(2) for its possible use in desulfurization applications, the interactions of molecular sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) with a polycrystalline uranium dioxide film have been studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and low-energy ion scattering (LEIS). The stoichiometric, oxygen-deficient, calcium-precovered and sodium-precovered UO(2) surfaces have been characterized. The changes in oxide reactivity upon creation of oxygen vacancies and coadsorption of sodium and calcium have been studied. After creation of a reduced UO(2-x)

Intrarenal haemodynamics in uranyl nitrate-induced acute renal failure.

Intrarenal haemodynamics were investigated in the dog at various intervals after the iv. injection of 10 mg/kg uranyl nitrate (UN). Renal blood flow (RBF), as determined by measuring the renal venous effluent and by radioactive microspheres, decreased by about 23% at 6 hr after UN administration, as compared to normal controls, then rose and reached controls at 24 to 48 hr; subsequently, RBF increased and surpassed controls by about 36% at 96 hr. Thus, the early phase (6 hr) and the late phase (96 hr) of uranyl nitrate-induced acute renal failure (UNARF) were characterized by an increase and b

Optimizing the Production of a Condensed Tannin-Based Bioflocculant for Toxic Metal Remediation.

Conventional water treatment typically employs chemical coagulants and flocculants, such as aluminum sulfate and iron salts. However, the intensive use of these products can lead to negative environmental impacts and pose significant health risks. In this context, bioflocculants derived from renewable sources, such as tannins extracted from açaí seeds (Euterpe oleracea), represent a promising alternative for sustainable production. This study investigated the efficiency of a cationic bioflocculant (BioTAC), developed from açaí seed tannins and chemically modified via the Mannich reaction, for

Phosphorus mining and bioavailability for plant acquisition: environmental sustainability perspectives.

This review aims to examine microbial mechanisms for phosphorus (P) solubilization, assess the impacts of P mining and scarcity, and advocate for sustainable recycling strategies to enhance agricultural and environmental resilience. Phosphorus is an indispensable macronutrient for plant growth and agricultural productivity, yet its bioavailability in cultivation systems is often constrained. This scarcity has led to a heavy reliance on fertilizers derived from mined phosphate rock (PR), which is a finite resource usually contaminated with hazardous elements such as uranium, radium, and thorium

Radiobiological evaluation of the therapeutic effect of silver-111 for the ISOLPHARM project.

INTRODUCTION: The ISOLPHARM project has the aim of developing novel radiopharmaceuticals using the wide choice of radionuclides produced by Isotope Separation OnLine (ISOL) at LNL-INFN in the SPES facility, which is currently nearing completion. One of the most promising candidates for Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (TRT) is the beta-emitting radiometal silver-111, obtainable carrier-free irradiating a uranium carbide target with a proton beam and applying the ISOL technique. Until SPES will become fully operational, small quantities of silver-111 are produced by the TRIGA Mark II nuclear react

Characterization of the Ubatuba formation using gamma radiometry, X-ray fluorescence and well logs: A case study from the Upper Cretaceous to the Lower Paleogene in the Campos Basin.

In the Campos Basin, the Turonian, Campanian, and the Cretaceous-Paleocene-Lower Eocene transition are characterized by the presence of rollover-type anticlines and listric faults, reflecting a pronounced tectonic influence during sediment deposition and reorganization. This tectonic activity resulted in distinct depositional patterns and abrupt environmental changes, observable at multiple scales through geophysical methods. These variations span from abyssal to neritic environments, as well as the interfaces between bathyal and neritic domains. The aim of this study was to define the main ch
