Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is accompanied by increased mast cell numbers in the absence of leucocyte infiltration.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) is the most common allergic disease to affect the eye, occurring alone or in association with allergic rhinitis. Infiltration with mast cells and eosinophils is characteristic of the chronic forms of allergic conjunctivitis such as vernal and atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and these cell types also contribute significantly to allergic inflammation in the skin. Indirect evidence for a similar pattern of cellular events in SAC comes from studies which demonstrate raised eosinophil and neutrophil numbers in conjunctival scrapings and elevated level

Circannual changes in progesterone secretion in intact ewes, luteinizing hormone secretion in ovariectomized estradiol-implanted ewes, and prolactin secretion in three sheep breeds anticipated to differ in seasonality of reproduction.

Changes in progesterone secretion in intact ewes (7 or 9 per breed) and luteinizing hormone secretion in ovariectomized, estradiol-implanted ewes (9 or 10 per breed) were monitored for 12 mo in Suffolk, tropically adapted St. Croix, and OOS ewes. The OOS line is a composite population of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finnish Landrace breeding that was selected for 10 yr for ability to lamb in October and early November. Ewes were isolated from rams, and blood samples were collected twice weekly. Circulating prolactin concentrations were also determined from blood samples collected near

Demographic aspects of allergic ocular diseases and evaluation of new criteria for clinical assessment of ocular allergy.

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of allergic ocular diseases (AOD) are characterized by their wide variety. Clinical evaluation criteria are essential not only for objective assessment in clinical trials, but also for clinical studies on etiological aspects of AOD. However, there have been no internationally established criteria for clinical evaluation and classification of the severity of AOD. We established new criteria and applied them to many cases of AOD, and evaluated their usefulness for clinical purposes. We also studied whether each clinical entity of AOD [allergic conjunctivitis (AC

Detection of antigen-specific T cells in experimental immune-mediated blepharoconjunctivitis in DO11.10 T cell receptor transgenic mice.

Antigen (Ag)-specific T cells are thought to play a key role in pathogenesis of chronic allergic conjunctivitis (AC) such as atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). In order to investigate the trafficking of Ag-specific T cells in experimental immune-mediated blepharoconjunctivitis (EC), we established a novel AC model in DO11.10 T cell receptor (TcR) transgenic (Tg) mice. DO11.10 TcR-Tg mice were challenged with eye drops of whole OVA protein, OVA peptide 1-15, 321-335, or 323-339. Their eyes were histologically examined. Conventional proliferation assay was p

Molecular basis of photoinduced seasonal energy rheostasis in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Seasonal rhythms in photoperiod are a predictive cue used by many temperate-zone animals to time cycles of lipid accumulation. The neuroendocrine regulation of seasonal energy homeostasis and rheostasis are widely studied. However, the molecular pathways underlying tissue-specific adaptations remain poorly described. We conducted two experiments to examine long-term rheostatic changes in energy stability using the well-characterized photoperiodic response of the Japanese quail. In experiment 1, we exposed quails to photoperiodic transitions simulating the annual photic cycle and examined the m
