Radiomics-based classification of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw using panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) caused by bone resorption inhibitors is difficult to treat and reduces the patient's quality of life. We aimed to classify the likelihood of MRONJ development using panoramic radiographs taken prior to bone resorption inhibitor administration. METHODS: We included patients who underwent panoramic radiographic evaluation at Hiroshima University Hospital prior to bone resorption inhibitor administration. Thirty-two patients with MRON of the mandible (16 men and 16 women) and 57 without MRONJ (23 men and 34 women) were selected. The

Synchronized dynamics of dengue across the Americas.

Dengue is endemic throughout the tropical areas of the Americas, but little is known about its regional dynamics. We examined seasonal and multiannual dengue trends across the Americas and possible underlying mechanisms using monthly dengue surveillance data from 14 countries. We collected monthly dengue case data from 241 subnational locations in 14 countries, ranging from 1985 to 2018 (6 to 22 years), and used wavelet analysis to isolate seasonal (8 to 16 months) and multiannual (17+ months) patterns. For each location, we assessed seasonal and multiannual dynamics as well as coherence and d

Altered brain complexity in first-episode antipsychotic-naïve patients with schizophrenia: A whole-brain voxel-wise study.

BACKGROUND: Measures of cortical topology are believed to characterize large-scale cortical networks. Previous studies used region of interest (ROI)-based approaches with predefined templates that limit analyses to linear pair-wise interactions between regions. As cortical topology is inherently complex, a non-linear dynamic model that measures the brain complexity at the voxel level is suggested to characterize topological complexities of brain regions and cortical folding. METHODS: T1-weighted brain images of 150 first-episode antipsychotic-naïve schizophrenia (FES) patients and 161 healthy

CT-derived radiomics predict the growth rate of renal tumours in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome.

AIM: To predict renal tumour growth patterns in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome by utilising radiomic features to assist in developing personalised surveillance plans leading to better patient outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study evaluated 78 renal tumours in 55 patients with histopathologically-confirmed clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs), which were segmented and radiomics were extracted. Volumetric doubling time (VDT) classified the tumours into fast-growing (VDT <365 days) or slow-growing (VDT ≥365 days). Volumetric and diametric growth analyses were compared between the groups. M

Climate, demography, immunology, and virology combine to drive two decades of dengue virus dynamics in Cambodia.

The incidence of dengue virus disease has increased globally across the past half-century, with highest number of cases ever reported in 2019 and again in 2023. We analyzed climatological, epidemiological, and phylogenomic data to investigate drivers of two decades of dengue in Cambodia, an understudied endemic setting. Using epidemiological models fit to a 19-y dataset, we first demonstrate that climate-driven transmission alone is insufficient to explain three epidemics across the time series. We then use wavelet decomposition to highlight enhanced annual and multiannual synchronicity in den

Validation of subjective manual palpation using objective physiological recordings of the cranial rhythmic impulse during osteopathic manipulative intervention.

Intermediate (IM) band physiology in skin blood flow exhibits parallels with the primary respiratory mechanism (PRM) or cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI), controversial concepts of osteopathy in the cranial field (OCF). Owing to inconsistent manual palpation results, validity of evidence of PRM/CRI activity has been questionable. We therefore tried to validate manual palpation combining instrumented tracking and algorithmic objectivation of frequencies, amplitudes, and phases. Using a standard OCF intervention, cranial vault hold (CVH), two OCF experts palpated and digitally marked CRI frequencie

Machine learning aided classification of tremor in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Tremors are frequent and disabling in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Characteristic tremor frequencies in MS have a broad distribution range (1-10 Hz), which confounds the diagnostic from other forms of tremors. In this study, we propose a classification method for distinguishing MS tremors from other forms of cerebellar tremors. METHODS: Electromyogram (EMG), accelerometer and clinical data were obtained from a total of 120 [40 MS, 41 essential tremor (ET) and 39 Parkinson's disease (PD)] subjects. The proposed method - Soft Decision Wavelet Decomposition (SDWD) - was used

Unraveling the Underlying Arrhythmia Mechanism in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation: Results From the STARLIGHT Study.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms that initiate and sustain persistent atrial fibrillation are not well characterized. Ablation results remain significantly worse than in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in which the mechanism is better understood and subsequent targeted therapy has been developed. The aim of this study was to characterize and quantify patterns of activation during atrial fibrillation using contact mapping. METHODS: Patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (n=14; mean age, 61±8 years; ejection fraction, 59±10%) underwent simultaneous biatrial contact mapping with 64 electrode cath

Thalamomuscular coherence in essential tremor: hen or egg in the emergence of tremor?

Thalamomuscular coherence in essential tremor (ET) has consistently been detected in numerous neurophysiological studies. Thereby, spatial properties of coherence indicate a differentiated, somatotopic organization; so far, however, little attention has been paid to temporal aspects of this interdependency. Further insight into the relationship between tremor onset and the onset of coherence could pave the way to more efficient deep brain stimulation (DBS) algorithms for tremor. We studied 10 severely affected ET patients (six females, four males) during surgery for DBS-electrode implantation

Radiomic Biomarkers to Refine Risk Models for Distant Metastasis in HPV-related Oropharyngeal Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Distant metastasis (DM) is the main cause of death for patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancers (OPCs); yet, there are few reliable predictors of DM in this disease. The role of quantitative imaging (ie, radiomic) analysis was examined to determine whether there are primary tumor features discernible on imaging studies that are associated with a higher risk of DM developing. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Radiation therapy planning computed tomography scans were retrieved for all nonmetastatic p16-positive OPC patients treated with radiation therapy or chemoradi

Vibroacoustic detection of inclusions in an elastomeric tissue phantom using a multilayer perceptron classifier: A proof-of-concept study.

Accurate detection of tumor boundaries is critical for the success of oncologic surgical intervention. Traditionally, palpation can handover important information for tumor localization based on the tissue mechanical properties, but in Minimally Invasive Surgery no direct access to the tumor for palpation is feasible. For providing a technical analogy, this feasibility-level study focusses on the simplified problem of detection of an inclusion within a homogeneous silicon phantom. We hypothesized that existence of a relatively stiffer inclusion within an elastomer tissue phantom changes vibroa

Improved multi-layer wavelet transform and blind source separation based ECG artifacts removal algorithm from the sEMG signal: in the case of upper limbs.

Introduction: Surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals have been widely used in human upper limb force estimation and motion intention recognition. However, the electrocardiogram(ECG) artifact generated by the beating of the heart is a major factor that reduces the quality of the EMG signal when recording the sEMG signal from the muscle close to the heart. sEMG signals contaminated by ECG artifacts are difficult to be understood correctly. The objective of this paper is to effectively remove ECG artifacts from sEMG signals by a novel method. Methods: In this paper, sEMG and ECG signals of the bic

Acquisition and Classification of Lung Sounds for Improving the Efficacy of Auscultation Diagnosis of Pulmonary Diseases.

PURPOSE: Lung diseases are the third leading cause of death worldwide. Stethoscope-based auscultation is the most commonly used, non-invasive, inexpensive, and primary diagnostic approach for assessing lung conditions. However, the manual auscultation-based diagnosis procedure is prone to error, and its accuracy is dependent on the physician's experience and hearing capacity. Moreover, the stethoscope recording is vulnerable to different noises that can mask the important features of lung sounds which may lead to misdiagnosis. In this paper, a method for the acquisition of lung sound signals a

A Novel Acceleration Signal Processing Procedure for Cycling Safety Assessment.

With the growing rate of urban population and transport congestion, it is important for a city to have bike riding as an attractive travel choice but one of its biggest barriers for people is the perceived lack of safety. To improve the safety of urban cycling, identification of high-risk location and routes are major obstacles for safety countermeasures. Risk assessment is performed by crash data analysis, but the lack of data makes that approach less effective when applied to cyclist safety. Furthermore, the availability of data collected with the modern technologies opens the way to differe

A Machine Learning Approach for the Identification of a Biomarker of Human Pain using fNIRS.

Pain is a highly unpleasant sensory and emotional experience, and no objective diagnosis test exists to assess it. In clinical practice there are two main methods for the estimation of pain, a patient's self-report and clinical judgement. However, these methods are highly subjective and the need of biomarkers to measure pain is important to improve pain management, reduce risk factors, and contribute to a more objective, valid, and reliable diagnosis. Therefore, in this study we propose the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and machine learning for the identification of a po

ECG-based Random Forest Classifier for Cardiac Arrest Rhythms.

Rhythm annotation of out-of-hospital cardiac episodes (OHCA) is key for a better understanding of the interplay between resuscitation therapy and OHCA patient outcome. OHCA rhythms are classified in five categories, asystole (AS), pulseless electrical activity (PEA), pulsed rhythms (PR), ventricular fibrillation (VF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT). Manual OHCA annotation by expert clinicians is onerous and time consuming, so there is a need for accurate and automatic OHCA rhythm annotation methods. For this study 852 OHCA episodes of patients treated with Automated External Defibrillators (A
