Clinicopathological profile of benign soft tissue tumours: a study in a tertiary care hospital in Western India.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of soft tissue tumours, especially the frequency of benign tumours relative to malignant ones, is nearly impossible to determine accurately. Benign soft tissue tumours outnumber malignant tumours by a wide margin. OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this study was to look into the clinicopathological profile of benign soft tissue tumour in terms of hospital incidence of age, sex, site distribution and comparison of histological types of benign soft tissue tumours with other similar studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The operated specimens or biopsy material of benign sof

Diagnostic efficiency of multidetector computed tomography versus magnetic resonance imaging in differentiation of head and neck paragangliomas from other mimicking vascular lesions: comparison with histopathologic examination.

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) versus MRI in detection and characterization of paragangliomas and differentiating them from other vascular mimicking conditions in the neck and skull base in comparison with histo-pathological results as a gold standard. A prospective study included 30 patients with vascular neck lesions. They were susceptible for MDCT and MRI for characterization of the nature of the lesions. Histo-pathological evaluation was performed in all lesions for confirmation. As a result of this study included 30 pa

[Advances in the diagnosis of ENT tumors in childhood].

In the present study we review ENT tumor pathology in childhood. Only the most salient aspects are emphasized and the variety of entities reviewed was restricted. Molecular biology techniques reveal infection by human papilloma virus (types 6 and 11) in 50 % of papillomas, while immunohistochemical techniques are less effective in papilloma virus detection. The myofibroblastic nature of nasal angiofibroma has been demonstrated and its incidence is 25 times more frequent in patients with familial polyposis of the colon. Overexpression of p53 occurs in the initial stages of nasopharyngeal carcin

Intraoral desmoplastic fibroma: a manifestation of tuberous sclerosis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor usually recognized as an intraosseous counterpart of soft tissue fibromatosis in both gnathic and extra-gnathic sites. The most common site is mandible followed by pelvis and long bones. Maxilla has been reported to be involved very rarely. Desmoplastic fibroma is recently being considered to be one of the oral manifestations of tuberous sclerosis rather than a coincidental finding. We report an unusual case of a girl with a previous diagnosis of tuberosclerosis who presented at 8 years with an oral lesion diagnosed as desmopla

Nasomaxillary osteotomy in lesions of the central compartment of the middle cranial base.

The pituitary fossa, sphenoid rostrum, sphenoid sinus, nasopharynx, pterygopalatine fossa and clivus are the components of the central compartment of the middle cranial base. It is a surgical challenge to gain access to this region. This fact has led to the development of a number of surgical procedures reported in the literature. However, none of these techniques can provide a wide and direct exposure to the middle cranial fossa without morbidity on its own. In this report, nasomaxillary osteotomy is described as a satisfactory alternative to reach the middle cranial fossa. With the nasomaxil

Pathology of skull base tumors.

The multidisciplinary requirements of skull base surgery have evolved over the last 25 years. The heterogeneity of tissue types in the cranium base gives rise to a diverse group of benign and malignant neoplasms with vastly different prognoses. This article reviews the distinct clinicopathologic features of some of the unique and problematic neoplasms of this region.

Case Report: A case of ruptured renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma leading to the diagnosis of TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is frequently complicated by renal lesions, including angiomyolipoma (AML), renal cysts, and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Large deletions involving adjacent TSC2 and PKD1 genes cause TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene syndrome (PKDTS), which carries a risk of early renal decline. Epithelioid AML (eAML), to the best of our knowledge, has not been previously reported in children with PKDTS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old boy with hypomelanotic macules and facial angiofibromas presented with acute abdominal pain and fever; CT revealed a ruptured heterogeneous

Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis and renal angiomyolipoma in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The co-incidence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and tuberous sclerosis with pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is rare. In such patients, the rupture of renal AML may result in fatal circumstances, but this may be preventable. METHODS: A 22-year-old Asian woman with SLE was admitted to our hospital with severe left-flank pain. Imaging studies showed the bilateral rupture of multiple renal AMLs. RESULTS: The patient underwent emergency selective transcatheter embolization (TE) of the left renal artery. After TE and massive hydration, the

Innumerable Meningiomas Arising in a Patient With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Decades After Radiation Therapy.

Meningioma is the most common radiation-induced brain neoplasm, usually occurring after a latency of 20 - 35 years, with multiplicity in 10% of cases. Radiation-induced meningiomas (RIMs) have not previously been reported in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), unlike their well-known occurrence in other familial tumor predisposition syndrome patients. We report a TSC patient who developed numerous intracranial meningiomas twenty five year after radiation therapy for subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA). Autopsy examination showed innumerable, coalescent, benign, meningothelia

Tuberous Sclerosis: Current Update.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a relatively rare autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder secondary to mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 tumor suppressor genes. Although manifestation of the classic triad of seizures, intellectual disability, and facial angiofibromas may facilitate timely diagnosis of TSC, the multisystem features that may indicate TSC in the absence of these manifestations remain highly variable. In addition, patients with TSC are at risk of developing multiple benign and malignant tumors in various organ systems, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Thus, imagi

[Prevalence of the tuberous sclerosis complex at patients taken care for a renal angiomyolipoma].

INTRODUCTION: Bourneville's tuberous sclerosis or Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant hereditary phakomatosis associated with angiomyolipomas (AML) of the kidney. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of TSC in patients diagnosed and cared for AML in our department of urology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All the patients with AML were included between March 2009 and June 2016 in a French university hospital. Each patient was reviewed in consultation with a clinical examination and imaging. Specific clinical criteria were used to refer patients to genetic analys

Radiobiological Characterization of Tuberous Sclerosis: a Delay in the Nucleo-Shuttling of ATM May Be Responsible for Radiosensitivity.

The tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) syndrome is associated with numerous cutaneous pathologies (notably on the face), epilepsy, intellectual disability and developmental retardation and, overall, high occurrence of benign tumors in several organs, like angiofibromas, giant cell astrocytomas, renal angiomyolipomas, and pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis. TSC is caused by mutations of either of the hamartin or tuberin proteins that are mainly cytoplasmic. Some studies published in the 1980s reported that TSC is associated with radiosensitivity. However, its molecular basis in TSC cells is not d

Fibrous cephalic plaques in tuberous sclerosis complex.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous cephalic plaques (FCPs) stereotypically develop on the forehead of patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). They constitute a major feature for TSC diagnosis and may present before other TSC-related cutaneous hamartomas. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics of FCPs in TSC. METHODS: A total of 113 patients with TSC were enrolled in an observational cohort study. Retrospective analysis of medical records and skin photography was performed. FCPs were categorized by anatomic location and size. RESULTS: FCPs were observed in 36% of patients (41 of 113).

Tuberous sclerosis complex: advances in diagnosis, genetics, and management.

UNLABELLED: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant multisystem neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the development of multiple hamartomas distributed throughout the body, skin, brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs. Two-thirds of patients represent sporadic mutations. The classic triad is seizures, mental retardation, and cutaneous angiofibromas. However, the full triad occurs in only 29% of patients; 6% of them lack all three of them. Two tumor suppressor genes responsible for TSC have been identified: TSC1 gene on chromosome 9 and TSC2 on chromosome 16. This article

Two loci for tuberous sclerosis: one on 9q34 and one on 16p13.

32 families informative for the segregation of Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) have been examined for genetic markers on chromosomes 9, 11, 12 and 16. In one large family there was clear evidence of linkage to markers on chromosome 16p13.3 (lodscore with D16S291 of 4.7 at theta = 0) but other families were too small to give individually convincing lodscores. Combined results for all families gave positive results with ABO/DBH on chromosome 9 (max lod 2.63) and with D16S291 on chromosome 16 (max lod 3.98) at values of theta of 0.2 in each case. Further analysis showed strong evidence for heterogeneity

[Midfacial degloving: an alternative approach to the frontobasal area, the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses].

Midfacial degloving can be characterized as an alternative surgical approach for exposing the bony structures of the midface. In combination with transient partial osteotomies the nasal cavities, the paranasal sinuses, the pterygopalatine fossa and the posterior parts of the anterior skull base are easily accessible. Using an intercartilaginous, a transseptal and a circumvestibular incision in the nose and a vestibular incision in the oral cavity the soft tissues of the upper face are mobilized and transposed cranially up to the infraorbital rim, the nasion and the lacrimal sac. Thus one can a
