Here, we present the ITS ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence data on 330 larvae of nematodes of the genus Anisakis Dujardin, 1845 collected from 26 different bony fish species from 21 sampling locations and different climatic zones. New host records are provided for Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809) sensu stricto (s.s.) and A. pegreffli Campana-Rouget et Biocca, 1955 from Anoplopoma fimbria (Pallas) (Santa Barbara, East Pacific), A. typica (Diesing, 1860) from Caesio cuning (Bloch), Lepturacanthus savala (Cuvier) and Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus) (Indonesia, West Pacific), A. simplex s.s. from Colol

We analysed patients with allergic or digestive symptoms after seafood ingestion in order to assess a correct diet in Anisakis simplex sensitised individuals. A total of 120 patients who suffered allergic and/or digestive symptoms after marine food ingestion were studied. We performed skin prick tests for A. simplex and seafood, total serum and specific serum immunoglobulin E to A. simplex in the acute stage and 1 month later. A gastroscopy was carried out to find larvae in those patients with persistent abdominal pain. A challenge with non-infective larvae was performed to assess a correct di

OBJECTIVE: Anisakis simplex parasite causes anisakidosis, a disease that often mimics other gastrointestinal diseases such as peritonitis, appendicitis, Crohn's disease, ulcer, etc. Patients with digestive haemorrhage caused by ulcers, varices or Mallory syndrome were analysed for antibodies to the worm A. simplex.
METHODS: Antibody detection was carried out by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblot using crude extracts of antigen and excretory/secretory products. Total immunoglobulin (Ig), IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE were studied.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven patients were studied. The

Oral infection by Anisakis simplex third stage larvae (L3) frequently gives rise to an allergic response. To comprehend the allergic and immune responses induced by L3, we investigated the kinetics of specific antibody isotype expression and the time course of biological and immunochemical allergy states using sera prepared from rats orally infected with L3 twice, with an interval of 9 weeks between infections. Biological and immunochemical allergy states were analysed by RBL-2H3 exocytosis and by indirect ELISA for IgE, respectively. The peak IgM at reinfection (RI) was comparable or similar

The aim of this study was to verify whether cross-reactivity appeared between Toxocara canis and Anisakis simplex in an experimental rodent model. No cross-reactions were detected using sera from mice infected with T. canis eggs. When responses obtained against T. canis ES antigen using sera from BALB/c and C57BL/10 mice infected with T. canis eggs were compared with those obtained by testing sera from mice infected with one A. simplex L3, an increase in cross-reactions was observed using the C57BL/10 strain.

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex sensu stricto and Anisakis pegreffii are sibling species of nematodes parasitic on marine mammals. Zoonotic human infection with third stage infective larvae causes anisakiasis, a debilitating and potentially fatal disease. These 2 species show evidence of hybridisation in geographical areas where they are sympatric. How the species and their hybrids differ is still poorly understood.
RESULTS: Third stage larvae of Anisakis simplex s.s., Anisakis pegreffii and hybrids were sampled from Merluccius merluccius (Teleosti) hosts captured in waters of the FAO 27 geograp

Toxocariasis caused by the nematode larvae of the Toxocara genus is a worldwide parasitic zoonosis. Diagnosis of human toxocariasis commonly relies on serological tests since the symptoms and signs of Toxocara infection are not pathognomonic. However Toxocara larval excretory-secretory (TES) antigen used in serological tests may exhibit low specificity due to the cross-reactions between related helminth infections such as ascariasis, anisakiasis, strongyloidosis and filariasis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the possible effect of Trichinella cross-reactions in the serological diagnosis o

BACKGROUND: Inferring the microbiota diversity of helminths enables depiction of evolutionarily established ecological and pathological traits that characterize a particular parasite-host interaction. In turn, these traits could provide valuable information for the development of parasitosis control and mitigation strategy. The parasite Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) realizes the final stage of its life-cycle within gastric chambers of aquatic mammals, causing mild-to-moderate granulomatous gastritis with eosinophilic infiltrate, to severe ulcerative gastritis with mixed inflammator

Numerous factors contribute to perinatal risk, many of which remain undefined. This study sought to determine the frequency of fish intake in postpartum women, and to establish a relationship between the rates of immunoreactivity for antigens from Anisakis spp. and high-risk pregnancy. In this prospective noninterventional study, a structured questionnaire was administered and serum was collected from postpartum women at two perinatal centers (a high-risk birth unit [HRBU] and a low-risk birth unit [LRBU]) in the Niteroi municipality of Brazil. Anisakis species-specific IgG and IgE were measur

The nematode Anisakis simplex (AS) is a world wide distributed parasite that infects consumers of raw or undercoocked parasitized fish. The clinical manifestation of Anisakiosis depend on the site in the digestive tract in which larva lodges. The symptoms develops as a result of the inflammation when the larvae penetrates the gastric mucous. Most of asymptomatic subjects show high levels of specific IgE to AS. Diagnosis of AS allergy is not simple, due to cross-reactivity with other allergens. In childhood is more difficult to make a right diagnosis than in adult population. Most of positive p

The authors report a group of 36 cases of hypersensitivity to Anisakis simplex, a fish parasite. They examined 11 boys and 25 girls who attended the Allergy service of the Central Hospital Marques of Valdecilla in Santander (Spain), between 12th May 1997 and 26th June 1998, for history of acute urticaria, most often after an aggravation of an allergic pathology. All were given an immunological examination that was composed of: food investigation, prick test, measurement of total and specific IgE and blood eosinophilia. In conclusion, the authors emphasize an increase in hypersensitivity to Ani

The consumption of raw fish parasitized with larval ascaridoid nematodes of the family Anisakidae can cause anisakiasis, provoking gastrointestinal and/or allergic symptomatology. The main causative agents in the Anisakis genus are the sibling species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (s.s.) and A. pegreffii of the A. simplex sensu lato (s.l.) complex. Larvae of A. simplex (s.l.) are frequently detected in fish commonly consumed in Spain, as are larvae of the genus Hysterothylacium of the family Raphidascarididae, associated with allergic reactions but not considered pathogenic. Reported here are

Anisakis and Contracaecum species are fish borne zoonotic nematodes. In our previous studies, other larval anisakid and raphidascarid nematodes, Anisakis and Hysterothylacium species, were genetically identified in marine fish from Turkish waters. However, there is no information on molecular identification of larval Contracaecum species in marine fish from Turkey. Therefore, the aim of this study was only to investigate the presence and molecular identification of Contracaecum species in commonly commercialized marine fish from Turkish waters. A total of 475 marine fish, which belong to 21 di

Anisakid larvae are a prevalent food-borne pathogen that has been found in numerous fish species destined for human consumption. The accidental consumption of infected raw or poorly cooked fish may cause gastroenteric diseases and allergies in humans. In spite of the fact that thorough cooking or freezing kills Anisakis worms, this method does not destroy their allergenic capacity. The presence of A. simplex (s.s.) in seafood products may present a health risk for consumers. In Turkey, Atlantic mackerels are marketed as frozen and mainly imported from Norway. The aim of this study was to ident

Toxoplasma gondii is a food-borne and orofecal microorganism which produces chronic infection, and attempts have been made to prove its negative association with atopy in the context of the hygiene hypothesis. Anisakis simplex is a fish parasite associated with chronic urticaria (CU) in endemic regions. We analysed the relationship between both infectious agents in CU. We included 42 patients with chronic urticaria (18 patients with CU associated with A. simplex sensitization and 24 not sensitized CU patients). Patients were assessed for atopy by a skin prick test (SPT) against common aeroalle

BACKGROUND: So far, the frequency of Anisakis simplex-specific IgE antibodies has been determined by skin prick tests (SPTs) and the ImmunoCAP system. These commercial methods have good sensitivity, but their specificity is poor because they use complete parasite extracts. Our aim was to determine the frequency of sensitization to A. simplex using recombinant Ani s 1, Ani s 3, Ani s 5, Ani s 9 and Ani s 10 and to evaluate these allergens for diagnosis, comparing their performance with the commercial methods.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional validation study pe

The histopathology, ultrastructure, and immunohistochemistry of the alimentary canal of flounder Platichthys flesus (L.), naturally infected with the nematode Anisakis simplex s.l. (Rudolphi 1809) from the River Forth (Scotland), were investigated and described. Eight of the 16 flounders were infected with A. simplex s.l. larvae (L3); parasites were encapsulated by serosa on the external surface of the host's digestive tract (intensity of infection 1-8 parasites per host), although nematode larvae were found encysted under the peritoneal visceral serosa of the host spleen and liver and, occasi
