Andersen-Tawil Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review.

Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a very rare orphan genetic multisystem channelopathy without structural heart disease (with rare exceptions). ATS type 1 is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion and is caused by mutations in the KCNJ2 gene, which encodes the α subunit of the K+ channel protein Kir2.1 (in ≈ 50-60% of cases). ATS type 2 is in turn linked to a rare mutation in the KCNJ5-GIRK4 gene that encodes the G protein-sensitive-activated inwardly rectifying K+ channel Kir3.4 (15%), which carries the acetylcholine-induced potassium current. About 30% of cases are de novo/sporadic, sugge

DEGS1 variant causes neurological disorder.

Sphingolipidoses are monogenic lipid storage diseases caused by variants in enzymes of lipid synthesis and metabolism. We describe an autosomal recessive complex neurological disorder affecting consanguineous kindred. All four affected individuals, born at term following normal pregnancies, had mild to severe intellectual disability, spastic quadriplegia, scoliosis and epilepsy in most, with no dysmorphic features. Brain MRI findings were suggestive of leukodystrophy, with abnormal hyperintense signal in the periventricular perioccipital region and thinning of the body of corpus callosum. Nota

Prevalence, predictors and psychological conditions of tanning behavioural addiction - A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although regulatory and public concerns have implemented policies to minimize risk-associated tanning, little is known about tanning behavioural addiction (TBA). OBJECTIVES: To estimate and summarize the prevalence and predictors of TBA and its association with substance use and psychological conditions among tanners. METHODS: We systematically searched six electronic databases and grey literature from inception to February 26, 2026, without language restrictions, to identify all relevant studies addressing TBA among adolescents or adult tanners. Considering the identified valida

Sleep-related respiratory impairment and psychosocial stress in patients with persistent orofacial pain: A cross-sectional exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD), including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and habitual snoring, can substantially impair quality of life (QoL). However, evidence regarding their impact in patients with orofacial pain (OFP) remains limited. Although disentangling the specific consequences of SRBD from the overlapping conditions is challenging, validated psychometric instruments provide a valuable means of screening for associated biopsychosocial burdens, such as depression and anxiety. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate potential associations betwee

Are Burnt-out Doctors Prone to Seek Cosmetic Surgery? A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have so far examined several psychosocial factors associated with an interest in aesthetic plastic surgery. Among them, gender, teasing history, marital status, education, social networks and body dysmorphic disorders are all predictors of interest in cosmetic surgery. Given the fact that professional status can influence health-related attitudes, our objective was firstly to identify if medical professionals are more likely to express interest in plastic surgery compared to non-medical professionals. Secondary, given the high rate of burn-out among physicians, the study

Microstructural corpus callosum anomalies in children with prenatal alcohol exposure: an extension of previous diffusion tensor imaging findings.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have now shown corpus callosum abnormalities using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in comparison with nonexposed controls. The data suggest that posterior regions of the callosum may be disproportionately affected. The current study builds on previous efforts, including our own work, and moves beyond midline corpus callosum to probe major inter-hemispheric white matter pathways with an improved DTI tractographic method. This study also expands on our prior work by evaluating a larger sample and by incorporating

Patterns of energy availability and carbohydrate intake differentiate between adaptable and problematic low energy availability in female athletes.

BACKGROUND: Problematic low energy availability (EA) is the underlying culprit of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), and its consequences have been suggested to be exacerbated when accompanied by low carbohydrate (CHO) intakes. OBJECTIVES: This study compared dietary intake, nutrition status and occurrence of REDs symptoms in groups of female athletes, displaying different patterns of EA and CHO intake. METHODS: Female athletes (n = 41, median age 20.4 years) from various sports weighed and recorded their food intake and training for 7 consecutive days via a photo-assisted mobile ap

Brain white matter abnormalities associated with copy number variants.

White matter (WM) signal abnormalities are demonstrated in various neurodevelopmental disorders on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The pattern of WM abnormalities can aid in the diagnostic process. This study aims to characterize the WM changes found in microdeletion/microduplication syndromes. Thirteen patients with neurodevelopmental disorders due to copy number variations were collected from a cohort of children with evidence of WM abnormalities on brain MRI, in two medical centers. A pediatric neuroradiologist blindly interpreted the MRI scans. Clinical and genetic findings were re

Primary Care Recognition of Rabson-Mendenhall Syndrome Despite Absence of Classical Diabetic Symptoms.

BACKGROUND Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome (RMS) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the insulin receptor gene, leading to severe insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia. Classical features include acanthosis nigricans, non-obese or underweight body habitus, hirsutism, dental abnormalities, dysmorphic features, and variable growth abnormalities. Early recognition may be difficult when the initial presentation is dominated by non-specific symptoms rather than classical metabolic complaints. CASE REPORT A 10-year-old Saudi girl presented to

Deficiency of anterior pituitary hormones in Noonan syndrome and its impact on response to growth hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant, multisystem disorder with a prevalence of 1 in 1000-2500. Multiple etiologies have been proposed for short stature in NS, including resistance to growth hormone (GH) and GH deficiency (GHD). Irrespective of the presence of GHD, NS is a Food and Drug Administration-approved indication for recombinant-GH therapy. Few case reports of combined anterior pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD) in NS have been reported. AIM: To describe the clinico-biochemical characteristics of NS with CPHD and to assess the response to recombinant GH therapy.

International Consensus on the Diagnosis and Clinical Management of Idiopathic Short Stature: A Modified Delphi Method.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic short stature (ISS) refers to children whose height falls substantially below the mean for sex and age relative to a reference population, despite the absence of an identifiable endocrine, genetic, syndromic, or systemic disorder. Clinical management remains challenging because no dedicated ICD-11 code exists and no universally accepted diagnostic criteria have been established. This has led to variability in how the condition is classified, inconsistency in access to testing, and uncertainty around eligibility for growth-promoting therapies. To address these inconsist

Community norms of the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) among gender minority populations.

PURPOSE: Representing the pathological extreme pursuit of muscularity, muscle dysmorphia (MD) is characterized by a pervasive belief or fear around insufficient muscularity and an elevated drive for muscularity. Despite evidence of heightened body image-related concerns among gender minority populations, little is known about the degree of MD symptoms among gender minorities, particularly based on Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) scores. The objective of this study was to assess community norms of the MDDI in gender-expansive people, transgender men, and transgender women. METHOD:

Semilobar holoprosencephaly with cebocephaly associated with maternal early onset preeclampsia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The term holoprosencephaly was proposed by DeMyer and Zeman. It is a developmental defect of the embryonic forebrain with heterogeneous etiology including genetic and environmental factors. It is commonly associated with midfacial defects and has a spectrum of presentations. There are four types: alobar, semilobar, lobar, and variant. Holoprosencephaly is relatively rare. The overall prevalence in a multicenter study was 1 in 13,000 to 18,000 live births. However, the presentation of holoprosencephaly with cebocephaly, micropenis, agenesis of middle phalanges of the fifth finger, a

Nonpharmacologic treatments in psychodermatology.

The author believes that psychocutaneous medicine has indeed come of age and is being incorporated into mainstream medical practice. Patients presenting to dermatologists today are more sophisticated and are frequently dissatisfied with traditional medical therapies. They actively seek alternative approaches and adjuncts to standard treatments. In contrast to many other "alternative" (or) "holistic" treatments offered through non-medical venues, dermatologists can assure their patients that controlled studies support the efficacy of psychocutaneous techniques in improving many dermatologic con

Definition and diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa: a narrative review of the literature.

AIM: In some cases, detrimental consequences on health are generated by self-imposed dietary rules intended to promote health. The pursuit of an "extreme dietary purity" due to an exaggerated focus on food may lead to a disordered eating behavior called "orthorexia nervosa" (ON). ON raises a growing interest, but at present there is no universally shared definition of ON, the diagnostic criteria are under debate, and the psychometric instruments used in the literature revealed some flaws. This narrative review of the literature aims at assessing state of the art in ON definition, diagnostic cr

Neurodevelopmental Genetic Diseases Associated With Microdeletions and Microduplications of Chromosome 17p13.3.

Chromosome 17p13.3 is a region of genomic instability that is linked to different rare neurodevelopmental genetic diseases, depending on whether a deletion or duplication of the region has occurred. Chromosome microdeletions within 17p13.3 can result in either isolated lissencephaly sequence (ILS) or Miller-Dieker syndrome (MDS). Both conditions are associated with a smooth cerebral cortex, or lissencephaly, which leads to developmental delay, intellectual disability, and seizures. However, patients with MDS have larger deletions than patients with ILS, resulting in additional symptoms such as

Comprehensive and differential long-term characterization of the alpha-galactosidase A deficient mouse model of Fabry disease focusing on the sensory system and pain development.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder due to impaired activity of alpha-galactosidase A with intracellular accumulation of globotriaosylceramide. Associated small fiber pathology leads to characteristic pain in Fabry disease. We systematically assessed sensory system, physical activity, metabolic parameters, and morphology of male and female mice with alpha-galactosidase A deficiency (Fabry ko) from 2 to 27 months of age and compared results with those of age- and gender-matched wild-type littermates of C57Bl/6J background. RESULTS: From the age of two months, ma
