A compact, containerized gasification system was characterized for air emissions while burning four waste types. A methodology is presented for developing a standardized test waste composition and demonstrated using three military and one civilian waste types. Batch charges of waste were processed through a gasification chamber, afterburner, and wet scrubber. An electric field directed layer-by-layer assembly technique has been developed by combining electrophoretic deposition and the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. This technique is employed to realize spatially selective deposition of CdTe nanoparticles on electrodes of indium-tin oxide (ITO). To further explore the biochemical basis of Cd toxicity in developing wheat seedlings, we studied the possible role of nitric oxide (NO) and polyamines as signaling molecules involved in metal-induced root growth inhibition. When used at 0.1 mM, sodium nitroprusside, a NO-releasing compound, inhibited root growth to a similar extent as Cd and enhanced the polyamine contents as Cd also did. The action of natural (garlick extract, retinol) and of synthetic (crown-compound) antimutagenes in lymphotytes with gamma-radiation-induced inhibition of DNA-damages repair in cases of Elers-Danlos, syndrom, progeria and gomocystinurea was studied. Antimutagen cells defence from mutagenes was shown at all cases except one: progeria cells treated by retinol. Thus the repair-deficient cells resistance against mutagenes could be increased by antimutagenes.
