Borderline left ventricle refers to a spectrum of left ventricular underdevelopment, typically associated with other cardiac anomalies. The left ventricle may be mildly hypoplastic, as is sometimes seen accompanying aortic coarctation, or it can be severely hypoplastic, as is seen in hypoplastic left heart syndrome. For patients with a borderline left ventricle that is at either extreme, the treatment decision is relatively straightforward. Those with the most severe form of left ventricle hypoplasia will require single ventricle palliation or cardiac transplantation, whereas those with the mi

Mitral valve stenosis caused by a discrete supravalvular membrane is a rare congenital malformation haemodynamically leading to significant mitral valve stenosis. When the supravalvular mitral stenosis consists of a discrete supravalvular membrane adherent to the mitral valve, it is usually not clearly detectable by routine echocardiography. We report about the typical echocardiographic finding in three young patients with this rare form of a discrete membranous supravalvular stenosis caused by a membrane adherent to the mitral valve. These cases present a typical echocardiographic feature in

A 5 mo old female rottweiler was referred for evaluation of a suspected congenital heart disease. Clinical signs included anorexia, exercise intolerance, and severe loss of body condition. Clinical examination revealed dyspnea, pale mucous membranes, and weak femoral pulses. Pleural and abdominal effusions and iron deficiency anemia were identified. A distended intrathoracic caudal vena cava (CVC) visible on thoracic radiographs suggested that the modified transudate abdominal effusion was the result of improper venous return to the right side of the heart. Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) was dia

Cardiac and pulmonary disease are so closely interrelated that it is often difficult to determine in young infants which is the primary offender. As illustrated in these case reports, failure to recognize the true nature of the disease process may lead to unnecessary procedures and delays which can be life-threatening. Statistically, the wheezing infant very likely is suffering from primary pulmonary disease; however, congenital cardiac abnormalities can cause pulmonary symptoms which completely dominate the clinical picture and lead to erroneous diagnoses. Although rare, the basis of cough an

A 20-month-old patient with a previously diagnosed atrial septal defect presented with acute heart failure. The clinical and echocardiographic features at admission to hospital were of a congenitally partitioned left atrium. At surgery a medially displaced and infolded left atrial appendage together with infolded left atrial wall was found, which gave a false appearance of a left atrial 'membrane'. This unusual arrangement was subsequently correctly identified by transoesophageal echocardiography. It is speculated that the abnormal orientation of the appendage may have produced a physiologic a

A newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation warrants a full investigation of the etiopathogenesis of this common arrhythmia. In the adult population, the most frequently associated conditions are systemic hypertension, coronary artery disease, mitral valvulopathy, congestive heart failure, and hyperthyroidism. Nevertheless, more infrequent and even rare, yet correctable, etiologies should not be overlooked. We describe three patients who presented to our hospital with a first episode of atrial fibrillation and who subsequently were demonstrated to have very unusual cardiovascular pathologies subtend

BACKGROUND: Beyond the well-known etiologies of ischemic stroke associated with recognized vascular risk factors, the literature describes a spectrum of uncommon causes with low prevalence but significant diagnostic and therapeutic implications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case series report of seven rare etiopathogenic mechanisms (in patients aged 25-85) who presented within a 3-year interval (2022-2025) to our stroke unit at the Neurological Department-"St. Ap. Andrew" County Emergency Clinical Hospital in Galati, Romania.
RESULTS: The seven uncommon embolic stroke cases included three patien

Between 1985 and 2002, 60 patients (58% female) with a mean age of 20.3 +/- 12.1 years (range, 2-55 years) were treated for anterior mitral leaflet cleft. There was a primum atrial septal defect in 52 patients (87%) and a secundum type in 8 (13%). Concomitant cardiac defects were patent foramen ovale in 6 patients, cleft tricuspid valve in 3, ventricular septal defect in 2, cor triatriatum in 1, and persistent left superior vena cava in 1. Mean grade (1-4) of mitral insufficiency was 2.28 +/- 0.74. Atrial septal defects were closed with a pericardial patch in 45 patients, with a prosthetic pat

Several forms of congenital heart disease that cause left ventricular inflow obstruction have similar M-mode findings, and frequently the exact anatomic diagnosis cannot be made by M-mode echocardiography alone. We examined five children with various forms of left ventricular inflow obstruction using two-dimensional echocardiography. The diagnosis was confirmed by cardiac catheterization and surgery in all five patients. In one patient with congenital mitral valve stenosis, a thick mitral valve with two papillary muscles was imaged. This patient was easily distinguished from a second child wit

We report a case comparing the measured half-life of flecainide with the half-life stated on the label. An 84-year-old woman presented with symptoms of anorexia and exertional dyspnea. She had undergone mitral and aortic valve replacements and excision of the membranous septum in the atrium for mitral and aortic stenosis and cor triatriatum. She was regularly administered 100 mg/day flecainide for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. A previous electrocardiogram (ECG) showed a regular sinus rhythm. However, upon admission, the ECG revealed a heart rate of 94 bpm and an accelerated idioventricular r

During fetal life the right valve of the sinus venosus directs oxygenated blood from the inferior vena cava to the left atrium through the foramen ovale, until the regression of the right valve which usually occurs within the 15th week of pregnancy. Incomplete regression of the right venous valve in varying degrees can lead to different types of remnants such as the Eustachian valve, the Chiari Network and Cor Triatriatum Dexter. Prenatal diagnosis of remnants of right venous valve has only rarely been reported in the literature. We present a case of prenatal diagnosis of Chiari Network associ

The following is a case report of a 1-month-old patient who developed adverse hemodynamic sequelae during the use of nitric oxide (NO) in the postoperative period for pulmonary hypertension after correction of total anomalous pulmonary venous return. At the time of diagnosis, the patient had evidence of systemic right ventricular pressures estimated by continuous-wave Doppler. He was sedated and paralyzed for hyperventilation in preparation for surgery and underwent pulmonary vein confluence to left atrial anastomosis. Postoperative pulmonary hypertension was managed by hyperventilation, sedat

Division of the morphologically left atrium (cor triatriatum) is a recognized clinical and surgical entity. Division of the right atrium (prominence of the eustachian and thebesian valves) is recognized pathologically, but is rare. It is unusual for this entity to be diagnosed during life. Stimulated by our experience with two patients seen at operation, one with an obstructive spinnaker-like formation and the other with a partitioned right atrium in the setting of pulmonary atresia, we reviewed the specimens in the heart museum of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh that had prominence of the e

OBJECTIVE: Tricuspid regurgitation is often associated in patients with congenital heart disease. Significant morbidity and mortality are related to tricuspid valve replacement. Tricuspid valve plasty is still a preferred choice. This report deals with our surgical experience in using the edge-to-edge valve plasty technique to correct severe tricuspid regurgitation in patients with congenital heart disease.
METHODS: From December 2002 to August 2007, severe tricuspid regurgitation was corrected with a flexible band annuloplasty and edge-to-edge valve plasty technique in nine patients with con

Scanning suprasternal echocardiography was performed in 280 patients with a variety of cardiac anomalies. By using the special suprasternal transducer on the suprasternal notch, the aortic arch, right pulmonary artery, and left atrium were recorded superoinferiorly. From this reference position various scanning techniques were made to record the main pulmonary artery, pulmonary valve, ascending aorta, aortic valve, and distal aortic arch, wherever possible. These scans made it possible to assess (a) the integrity and size of right pulmonary artery and main pulmonary artery in pulmonary atresia

Left ventricular diverticulum is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly characterized by a myocardial outpouching that typically contracts synchronously with the left ventricle. It is usually incidentally detected and may mimic other ventricular outpouchings with distinct clinical and prognostic implications. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman referred for evaluation of systemic hypertension without prior cardiovascular disease. Transthoracic echocardiography raised suspicion of an interventricular communication due to an apparent septal discontinuity and hypertrophic moderator band. Cardiac

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common congenital heart anomaly, often diagnosed with relative ease. However, the presence of additional structural abnormalities, such as cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) or a prominent eustachian valve, can create a triatrial appearance, complicating diagnosis and management. Accurate differentiation of these anomalies is essential to guide appropriate clinical decisions. We report the case of a 25-year-old male with exertional dyspnea and fatigue. Cardiovascular examination revealed a wide, fixed splitting of S2 and a systolic murmur. Transthoracic echocardiograp
