Two cases of cutaneous cryptococcosis.

We report two cases of cutaneous cryptococcosis in male patients without underlying disease. Case 1 had a granulomatous mass on his right neck, gradually enlarging for 3 months. After the mass was debrided surgically in a hospital, the incision wound gradually developed into a severe ulceration. Mycological examination revealed Cryptococcus neoformans infection. It was significant that histopathology of both pre-surgery granuloma and post-surgery ulceration revealed thick-walled spores with thick capsule. Chest X-ray revealed a shadow in the left lower lung. After treatment with amphotec for 2

An analysis of the population of Cryptococcus neoformans strains isolated from animals in Poland, in the years 2015-2019.

Fungi belonging to the Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii species complex (CNGSC) are pathogens causing severe infections in humans and animals, that for humans may result in a mortality rate ranging up to 70%. The CNGSC is divided into eight major molecular types, that may differ in their virulence and susceptibility. In order to fully understand the epidemiology of cryptococcosis, it is important to study the world distribution and population structure of these pathogens. The present study is the first presenting a population of strains isolated in Poland and one of the few using a multi-spec

[Cryptococosis: clinical epidemiological laboratorial study and fungi varieties in 96 patients].

Ninety-six patients with cryptococcosis confirmed by clinical and laboratorial diagnosis were assessed in a prospective study in a University Hospital from March 1998 to November 2003; of these, 81.3% were HIV seropositive patients. Cryptococcus neoformans was isolated from different samples, of which the cerebrospinal fluid 74 (77%) was the most frequent. C. neoformans var neoformans was isolated in 89 cases, where as C. neoformans var gattii was isolated in 7. Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis was detected in 56.3% cases. It was the most frequent unique clinical manifestation and the fungus w

[The epidemiological characteristics of 105 cases of cryptococcosis diagnosed in the Republic of Argentina between 1981-1990].

Some epidemiological characteristics of 105 cases of cryptococcosis diagnosed in Argentina, between 1981-1990, were studied. Until 1987, the annual number of cases was 4-8. It has increased since 1988 by AIDS influence and reached 35 cases in 1990. The annual number of cases non associated with AIDS has remained in 3-7 cases. The age median of the all patients, AIDS and non AIDS associated cases was 30, 30 and 45 years old, respectively. The 20-39 years old group was the most affected and the age distribution was different in AIDS and non AIDS population. Masculine predominance was more eviden

MDA5 signaling induces type 1 IFN- and IL-1-dependent lung vascular permeability which protects mice from opportunistic fungal infection.

Lungs balance threat from primary viral infection, secondary infection, and inflammatory damage. Severe pulmonary inflammation induces vascular permeability, edema, and organ dysfunction. We previously demonstrated that poly(I:C) (pICLC) induced type 1 interferon (t1IFN) protected mice from Cryptococcus gattii (Cg) via local iron restriction. Here we show pICLC increased serum protein and intravenously injected FITC-dextran in the lung airspace suggesting pICLC induces vascular permeability. Interestingly, pICLC induced a pro-inflammatory signature with significant expression of IL-1 and IL-6

Temporal shifts in adaptive immunity drive HIV-associated cryptococcal IRIS: mechanisms, models, and therapeutic opportunities.

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis (CME) remains a leading cause of AIDS-related mortality, and up to one-quarter of persons living with HIV who survive CME develop cryptococcal immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (CME-IRIS) after antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. CME-IRIS arises when recovering immunity encounters a high residual fungal antigen burden, yet the temporal adaptive immune dynamics that distinguish protective reconstitution from damaging neuroinflammation are not fully defined. This review synthesizes clinical and experimental data to propose a temporal framework cent

Cryptococcal infection in haematologic malignancies and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

This review summarises both the recent and relevant studies about cryptococcal infections in haematologic malignancies and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Although uncommon in this patient population, this infection carries a high mortality, especially if left untreated. Given the limited data, we draw some conclusions with respect to management from the solid organ transplantation and HIV-infected literature. Herein, we discuss cryptococcosis with a particular attention to its background, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention in this

[Cutaneous mycoses in Japan originating from animals].

Human cases of dermatophytoses are occasionally transmitted from animals, and suffered from tinea corporis and sometimes Kerion celsi. The most frequent causative agent of these diseases is Microsporum canis. The other dermatophyte, Arthroderma benhamiae is now prevailing in rabbits, rodents and hedgehogs that are popular household pets in Japan. Therefore, some human cases of A. benhamiae infection were reported and the transmission of this infection from rabbits and rodents was confirmed.Cryptococcosis is regarded as dangerous zoonosis, but its transmission from animal to peoples has not bee

Severe Disseminated Cryptococcosis Leading to Multi-organ Failure in a Renal Transplant Patient: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcosis is a severe but rare opportunistic fungal infection predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals, such as posttransplant patients. The diagnosis is frequently delayed due to non-specific symptoms and lower incidence than other fungal infections. CASE REPORT: A case of a 50-year-old male renal transplant recipient who developed disseminated cryptococcosis complicated by multi-organ failure is presented. Despite adherence to international treatment guidelines, the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated due to the extensive immunosuppression required for tra

Cryptococcosis in solid organ transplantation-Guidelines from the American Society of Transplantation Infectious Diseases Community of Practice.

These updated guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation review the diagnosis, prevention, and management of cryptococcosis in the pre- and post-transplant period. The current update now includes a discussion of cryptococcosis, which is the third most common invasive fungal infection in SOT recipients. Infection often occurs a year after transplantation; however, early infections occur and donor-derived infections have been described within 3 months after transplant. There are two main species that cause infection, Cryptococcus neof

Human neutrophils produce extracellular traps against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

Neutrophils play an important role as effector cells and contribute to the resistance of the host against microbial pathogens. Neutrophils are able to produce extracellular traps (NETs) in response to medically important fungi, including Aspergillus spp., Candida albicans and Cryptococcus gattii. However, NET production in response to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis has yet to be studied. We have demonstrated that human neutrophils produce NETs against both conidia and yeasts of P. brasiliensis. Although the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI) did not alter NET production

Cryptococcosis in ferrets: a diverse spectrum of clinical disease.

Cryptococcosis was diagnosed in seven ferrets (five from Australia; two from western Canada) displaying a wide range of clinical signs. Two of the ferrets lived together. One (5-years-old) had cryptococcal rhinitis and presented when the infection spread to the nasal bridge. Its sibling developed cryptococcal abscessation of the right retropharyngeal lymph node 12 months later, soon after developing a severe skin condition. DNA fingerprinting and microsatellite analysis demonstrated that the two strains isolated from these siblings were indistinguishable. Two ferrets (2- to 3-years-old) develo

Epidemiology and host- and variety-dependent characteristics of infection due to Cryptococcus neoformans in Australia and New Zealand. Australasian Cryptococcal Study Group.

A prospective population-based study was conducted in Australia and New Zealand during 1994-1997 to elucidate the epidemiology of cryptococcosis due to Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans (CNVN) and C. neoformans var. gattii (CNVG) and to relate clinical manifestations to host immune status and cryptococcal variety. The mean annual incidence per 10(6) population was 6.6 in Australia and 2.2 in New Zealand. Of 312 episodes, CNVN caused 265 (85%; 98% of the episodes in immunocompromised hosts) and CNVG caused 47 (15%; 44% of the episodes in immunocompetent hosts). The incidence of AIDS-assoc

Lung adenocarcinoma concurrent with pulmonary cryptococcosis: a case report and literature review.

Pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) is a common opportunistic fungal infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii. PC primarily invades the respiratory system, followed by the central nervous system. Few clinical reports have examined the coexistence of PC and lung cancer. This study reports the case of a 54-year-old immunocompetent PC patient with lung adenocarcinoma. Chest CT revealed multiple nodules in the right lung, with the largest nodule located in the dorsal segment of the right lower lobe. 18 F‑FDG positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) revealed ele

[Genotypes and in vitro antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus isolates in Sichuan Province].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the genotypes and in vitro antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus strains isolated from Sichuan Province. METHODS: Ninety two clinical isolates of Cryptococcus spp. were collected from West China Hospital. Genotyping of the URA5 gene was accomplished by restriction fragment length polymorphism. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the isolates to 5 antifungals, including amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole were determined by agar-based E-test method. The MIC50 and MIC90 were calculated based on MICs. RESULTS: Among the

Feline cryptococcosis: impact of current research on clinical management.

UNLABELLED: DISEASE SUMMARY: Cryptococcosis, principally caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, is the most common systemic mycosis of cats worldwide. Cats may be infected following inhalation of spores from the environment, with the nasal cavity suspected as being the initial site of colonization and subsequent infection. Other sites of infection in cats are the skin, lungs, lymph nodes, central nervous system (CNS), eyes and, occasionally, periarticular connective tissue. Cryptococcosis can be diagnosed using serology (antigen testing), cytologic examination of smears, hi

The isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from pigeon droppings and serotyping of naturally and clinically sourced isolates in China.

This is the first report on the isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from pigeon droppings in China and their serotypes. C. neoformans colonies which produced brown colonies on caffeic acid-cornmeal agar were found in Twenty-five out of thirty-six samples of pigeon droppings. Fifty-one colonies randomly picked from the positive samples were identified as C. neoformans by a commercially available kit for carbon source assimilation test and Christensen's urea agar. Forty (78%) out of the 51 strains were serotyped as A and 11 (22%) as AD. At the same time, seventeen out of nineteen clinical isola
