A semi-implantable middle ear electromagnetic hearing device (SIMEHD) is proposed for limited clinical trial in adult patients to evaluate the implantable hearing device for moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigational device exemption (IDE) approval has been granted (May 1996) for clinical trials. The implant unit has been evaluated acutely and chronically in animals (cats) with excellent results. Five cats undergoing chronic implantation were allowed to survive an average of 9.6 months, showing that the SIMEHD is biocompatible, functional

In order to examine the influence of afferent input on nonpyramidal dendrite development in the auditory cortex, unilateral deafening was carried out in neonatal rabbits at birth, approximately 6 days prior to the onset of hearing. Deafening was produced by surgical removal of the incus and stapes ossicles, aspiration of the cochlear perilymph, and kanamycin injection into the oval window. At 60 days of age, acoustic stimulation of the deafened ear was unable to evoke auditory brainstem responses. The brains of experimental and littermate control rabbits were processed according to the Golgi-C

We report the investigation of the cause of isolated malleus fractures based on four recent patients at our clinic and five patients reported to us by Swedish otosurgeons. In recent years we have treated four patients with isolated malleus fractures. Colleagues in the Swedish Society of Otosurgeons were encouraged to send us reports on patients with diagnosed isolated malleus fractures, resulting in five more cases. A literature review focusing on the cause and management of this injury was also conducted. Eight of nine patients in the Swedish material had the same history. The patients had in

The surgical findings and results are presented on 32 ears with congenital stapes ankylosis with an associated congenital anomaly of the ossicular chain. One third of the patients had a syndromal diagnosis. In 26 ears, stapedectomy could be performed. In 2 other ears, stapes ankylosis to the bony facial canal was mobilized successfully. In the 4 remaining ears, surgical intervention had to be limited to an exploratory tympanotomy for various reasons. The average hearing gain was 23 dB for the 28 ears on which stapes surgery had been performed. A substantial hearing gain of at least 15 dB was a

In this case report, the air-conducted cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (AC cVEMP) test was only sensitive for the left superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD), even though the contralateral SCD was of equal length (2.5 mm). Furthermore, a lysis of the processus lenticularis incudis caused a real conductive hearing loss in the left ear. A diminished left AC cVEMP was thus expected, but the opposite was shown (increased corrected amplitude, lowered detection threshold). The patient only experienced hearing loss, so middle ear surgery was performed to repair the lysis. The pos

Anomalous coursing of a dehiscent horizontal segment of the facial nerve, overlying or running below the oval window, is a rare phenomenon exclusively associated with conductive deafness caused by developmental abnormalities of the stapes and occasionally coincident with additional types of congenital auricular and nonauricular abnormalities. This article describes three new cases of this entity, including one previously unreported coincidence of an abnormally contracted tympanic ring, which should serve to alert the surgeon to the danger of surgical damage to a dehiscent, displaced facial ner

INTRODUCTION: Various couplers exist for the Vibrant Soundbridge implant to connect the actuator to a middle ear structure. While the surgical indication mainly distinguishes between purely sensorineural hearing loss and mixed hearing loss, and audiological indication ranges are designed accordingly, we believe that the biomechanical distinction between forward and reverse cochlear stimulation is more meaningful. To evaluate this, we apply all common couplers in temporal bone experiments and correct the measurements for adequate comparability.

Tympano-ossicular damage, associated with tympanic membrane injury, may be a severe consequence of ear trauma. Several ossiculoplasty types have been employed as therapeutic options, usually with favourable hearing outcomes. However, in case of traumatic mixed hearing loss with a sensorineural component, ossiculoplasty might not be sufficient to restore serviceable hearing. In such cases, hearing rehabilitation with bone conduction implants might rationally be seen as a possible approach. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous report of bone conduction implant placement du

Background/Objectives: Stapes surgery is a well-established treatment for conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis, with the choice of prosthesis playing a pivotal role in audiological outcomes and safety. Heat-activated and superelastic nitinol prostheses are widely used, but their comparative effectiveness and complication profiles remain debated. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the audiological outcomes, complication rates, and overall performance of these two prosthesis types. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Seven stu

Recently, our research group has utilized serial histological sections to investigate the morphogenesis of the middle ear, which corresponds to the period of middle ear ossicle (MEO) cartilage formation. However, research regarding middle ear development during the post-embryonic period has been limited. In the present study, we investigated morphogenesis of the middle ear in human fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) between 37 and 197 mm using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our findings indicated that the morphology of the MEOs is similar during fetal development and adu

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A prototype system for intraoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has been developed and augmented with real time optical tracking of a surgical drill. We hypothesize that this system provides sufficient accuracy for guidance of temporal bone surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Basic research.
METHODS: Measurements of drill localization accuracy using CBCT imaging were obtained with a custom three-dimensional calibration object. Integrated CBCT imaging and drill tracking were prospectively evaluated on 12 cadaver temporal bones. Six inexperienced and six experience

Introduction Inactive squamosal disease is unique for having a conflicting treatment protocol, with an age-old debate between early surgical intervention or keeping patients in a long-term follow-up. The shifting paradigm is early intervention to prevent further progress into active disease and improve hearing outcome in its nascent stage. Objective To evaluate recurrence and hearing outcome in cases of inactive squamosal disease after cartilage strengthening tympanoplasty. Methods The study was conducted on 50 patients with inactive squamosal disease. Detailed examination was done to grade

The intricate distribution of the facial nerve within the temporal bone is crucial in otological surgery. Anomalous facial nerve pathways are occasionally observed in middle ear malformations, although intra-tympanic bifurcation of the facial nerve is rare. When managing ossicular malformations with atypical facial nerve trajectories, hearing reconstruction should be prioritized based on the trajectory pattern and presence of the oval window. In this case, stapes surgery was performed due to facial nerve bifurcation within the tympanic cavity. In this case report, a 15-year-old female underwen

OBJECTIVE: Pure tone audiometry (PTA) guides surgical decision-making in chronic otitis media (COM), and PTA values depend upon the type and extent of COM.
METHODS: Our cross-sectional study included patients with COM with/without cholesteatoma who were scheduled for surgery. Findings on examination of the middle ear under the microscope and at surgery which could explain the hearing loss were corroborated with preoperative PTA through appropriate statistical methods.
RESULTS: The study included 114 patients (mean age: 31.07 years; range: 7-57). Following preoperative PTA, 50% of patients ha
