Tinnitus is a common symptom in otosclerosis patients. Many papers have been written about tinnitus outcome after stapes surgery. However, none has attempted to quantify the intensity of the symptom pre- and postoperatively in order to evaluate the influence of surgery on the degree of annoyance caused by tinnitus. Severe disabling tinnitus (SDT) is defined by Shulman as a symptom severe enough to disrupt the patient's routine and to prevent him from performing his daily tasks. The measurement of bone-conduction thresholds is an integral part of audiologic evaluation. The relationship between bone-conduction and air-conduction thresholds is the differentiating diagnostic indicator between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. At the same time, the influence of middle ear and inner ear structures upon the bone-conduction response has been well documented. We present two cases illustrating this influence and attempt to explain the clinical bone-conduction thresholds with operative findings.

We present the results of our revision stapes operations from 1989 to 2004 (n = 217). Long-term follow-up was performed in the first 135 cases. Eighteen of these patients were revised because of inner ear symptoms, predominantly within the first year. OBJECTIVE: Quantify the improvement and impact of the active middle ear implants (AMEIs) on a moderate-to-severe mixed hearing loss population.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study on the indications and results obtained by individuals implanted with the AMEI.
SETTINGS: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Thirteen adult patients with moderate-to-severe hearing loss were evaluated. Air and bone conductive pure tone audiometry and disyllabic word discrimination was performed before and after surgery. The follow-up period was from 5 to 64 months.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of efficacy of ossiculoplasty (OP) using different transplants. A total of 202 operations were performed. Prostheses made of the fragments of the auditory ossicles, or a cortical layer of the temporal bone (n=81), of nail plate (n=56), titanium implants (n=65) were applied. This study reports the evaluation of the hearing results after 62 implantations of a pure gold (99.9%) piston in cases of otosclerosis. A retrospective analysis of the pre- and postsurgery audiological results of these patients was carried out by microcomputer.
