UNLABELLED: The outcome for children with pulmonary vein atresia has been historically poor. This report describes clinical outcomes after surgical treatment of primary and secondary pulmonary vein atresia. All patients undergoing surgery for pulmonary vein atresia at Children's Hospital Boston from 1 January 2005 to 1 January 2009 were identified. The data available for analysis included demographic characteristics, findings based on cardiac catheterization and other imaging, clinical information, operative surgical intervention, and pulmonary vein histology. The study-specific information in

Systemic hypertension is not usually a complication following repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). We report an infant with supracardiac TAPVC with hypertensive crises post-operatively resulting in pulmonary edema. We feel this might have been related to the pre-operative hemodynamics as described. Beta-blockers improved the hypertensive crises.

We report the results of our retrospective evaluation, from February 2011 through August 2014, of the anatomic features of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) and its associated cardiovascular anomalies in a pediatric population. In all 43 patients under study (23 female; average age, 9 mo [range, 4 d-7.1 yr]), these examinations had been performed with a dual-source 256-detector scanner. The type of TAPVC, the presence of obstruction, and the association with other cardiovascular anomalies were investigated and recorded. In accordance with the absence or presence of these acco

We report a 64-year-old man with incidentally found uncorrected total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). There have been only a few case reports of untreated TAPVC diagnosed after 60 years of age. Also, this is a first case report of TAPVC in which ECG-gated CT and phase-contrast cine magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) was performed. He was referred to our hospital for the surgery of rectal cancer. He had been diagnosed to have an arterial septal defect (ASD) and persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC), and Eisenmenger's syndrome was thought to be the cause of cyanosis at first

Most isolated congenital heart defects are thought to be sporadic and are often ascribed to multifactorial mechanisms with poorly understood genetics. Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR) occurs in 1 in 15,000 live-born infants and occurs either in isolation or as part of a syndrome involving aberrant left-right development. Previously, we reported causative links between TAVPR and the PDGFRA gene. TAPVR has also been linked to the ANKRD1/CARP genes. However, these genes only explain a small fraction of the heritability of the condition. By examination of phased single nucleotide po

BACKGROUND: Surgical results for functional univentricular heart with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) have been unsatisfactory to date.
METHODS: During a 25-year period until December 2009, 207 TAPVC patients underwent surgical repair at our institute, including 56 with a univentricular heart. The 10-year survival rate was 51.1% with univentricular heart and 84.7% with biventricular heart (p<0.0001; log-rank, 27.6). Surgical outcomes and risk factors for early and late death after TAPVC repair in univentricular hearts were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Patients were

Detailed preoperative imaging of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is critical to ensuring adequate surgical planning and preoperative decision making. The purpose of this study was to describe the computed tomography findings of TAPVC and identify morphologic death risk factors. We conducted a retrospective study included 70 patients with TAPVC between May 2014 and June 2017 in Hunan Children's Hospital. All available clinical data and computed tomography imaging were reviewed, and survival time was followed-up. Life Tables analysis was used to estimate survival rates. Patie

We report a rare causal association between obstructed supracardiac totally anomalous pulmonary venous drainage and coronary sinus ostial atresia. Our 12-week-old patient developed venous myocardial infarction secondary to coronary venous hypertension because her sole route of coronary venous drainage was obstructed. She recovered after the obstruction was relieved by balloon dilation. Surgical repair then included anastomosis of the pulmonary venous confluence to the left atrium, ligation of the vertical vein, and unroofing of the coronary sinus. Coronary sinus ostial atresia is rarely diagno

BACKGROUND: Different methods for surgical correction of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) exist. We evaluated the outcomes of four techniques regarding morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: A total of 116 patients underwent PAPVC repair in our institution over a period of 20 years. Single-patch technique (n = 82 [71%], mean age: 18.59 ± 20.49 years), double-patch technique (n = 13 [11%], mean age: 43.18 ± 25.14 years), Warden's technique (n = 7 [6%], mean age: 10.04 ± 10.47 years), and direct implantation of anomalous pulmonary veins (n = 14 [12%], mean age: 14.42 ± 18.58 yea

BACKGROUND: Poor left ventricular (LV) growth and diastolic dysfunction long after simple total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) repair has been well documented and is believed to originate from insufficient preoperative volume preload. The objective of the study was to confirm these findings.
METHODS: Of 61 patients undergoing simple TAPVC repair between 1996 and 2016, 42 patients undergoing postoperative catheter examinations were enrolled. The mean age at the time of repair was 39 ± 117 days. Postoperative catheter examinations were conducted at a mean duration of 1.1 years af

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO) is an important cause of late mortality in total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). We aimed to describe current practices for the management of postoperative PVO and the efficacy of the different interventional procedures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective international collaborative population-based study involving 19 pediatric cardiac centers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Sweden. Patients with TAPVC born between January 1, 1998, and December 31, 2004, were identified. Patients with functionally univentricular circulation o

The association of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection with ventricular septal defect and aortic coarctation is rare. A premature neonate weighing 1350 g was diagnosed with infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, aortic coarctation, and a perimembranous ventricular septal defect. On postnatal day 23, we performed emergency extended aortic arch anastomosis under total circulatory arrest, pulmonary venous connection repair using a primary sutureless technique, and patch closure of the atrial septal and perimembranous ventricular septal defects. The patient was discharge

BACKGROUND: A persistent anastomosis between the pulmonary veins that connect with the left atrium and the systemic vein that drains into the right atrium has occasionally been reported. We report characteristics and transcatheter therapy in partially abnormal pulmonary venous return with additional drainage to the left atrium.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied such patients in 5 institutions.
RESULTS: Ten patients (6 girls) presented at a median age of 8 (0.1 to 54) years with 2 anatomic types: 8 vertical vein types with drainage of the left upper lobe to the innominate vein via a large v

Background Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a rare cardiac malformation associated with significant morbidity and mortality rates. We report a large surgical series study to evaluate mid-term and long-term results of conventional surgical techniques. Methods and Results We performed a retrospective analytic study of all patients operated on for simple total anomalous pulmonary venous connection in the University Hospital of Lyon, France, between January 1973 and June 2014. A total of 180 patients were included (43% supracardiac, 27% intracardiac, 19% infracardiac, and 11% mixed t

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reported our 26-year experience with operative repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) with biventricular physiology.
METHODS: Between December 1982 and December 2008, 122 TAPVC patients with biventricular heart underwent surgical repair in our department. Moderate or deep hypothermia was induced at the time of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Follow-up was conducted for 5 postoperative years. Surgical outcomes of early and intermediate deaths after TAPVC repair were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Six deaths occurred operatively; and thre

In recent years the advent of high-resolution and color Doppler ultrasound has enabled a more comprehensive examination of the veins at the cardiac level. These veins include both the superior and inferior vena cava, the pulmonary veins, the azygos vein, the coronary sinus, and the brachiocephalic (or innominate) vein. This article gives a review of the normal and abnormal conditions of the cardiac venous system. Normal anatomy and abnormal findings of these veins are demonstrated by grayscale and color Doppler. Three groups of anomalies are presented: 1) the interrupted inferior vena cava wit
