Electrophysiological evidence of subclinical trigeminal dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 and smell impairment: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Smell and taste disturbances are among the most frequent neurological symptoms in patients with COVID-19. A concomitant impairment of the trigeminal nerve has been suggested in subjects with olfactory dysfunction, although it has not been confirmed with objective measurement techniques. In this study, we explored the trigeminal function and its correlations with clinical features in COVID-19 patients with impaired smell perception using electrophysiological testing. METHODS: We enrolled 16 consecutive patients with mild COVID-19 and smell impairment and 14 healthy controls (HCs).

Olfactory Function in Autism Spectrum Disorder Across the Lifespan: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Altered sensory processing is recognized as a core diagnostic feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Olfactory perception in autism remains poorly characterized, despite its important role in safety, nutrition, and socialization. We conducted a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify differences and identify moderators in olfactory function between autistic and non-autistic individuals. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched Web of Science, SCOPUS, PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases and ident

Ohmic heating processing of milk for probiotic fermented milk production: Survival kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes as contaminant post-fermentation, bioactive compounds retention and sensory acceptance.

The survival kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes (9 log CFU/mL) as a post-fermentation contaminant in probiotic fermented milk (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5, 8-9 log CFU/mL) processed with milk subjected to ohmic heating (0, 4, 6, and 8 V/cm; CONV, OH4, OH6, OH8, 90-95 °C/5 min) was investigated using Weibull predictive model. Additionally, the presence of bioactive compounds (antioxidant activity, inhibition of the enzymes α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and angiotensin-converting) and sensory analysis (consumer test) of probiotic fermented milks were evaluated. Overall, OH provided a decrease in

Adherence to ready-to-use food and acceptability of outpatient nutritional therapy in HIV-infected undernourished Senegalese adolescents: research-based recommendations for routine care.

BACKGROUND: Ready-to-use food (RUF) is increasingly used for nutritional therapy in HIV-infected individuals. However, practical guidance advising nutrition care to HIV-infected adolescents is lacking, so that little is known about the acceptability of such therapy in this vulnerable population. This study assesses the overall acceptability and perception of a RUF-based therapy and risk factors associated with sub-optimal RUF intake in HIV-infected undernourished adolescents in Senegal. METHODS: Participants 5 to 18 years of age with acute malnutrition were enrolled in 12 HIV clinics in Seneg

Acceptability and effect on food choices of incentives promoting more sustainable diets among low-income consumers: A qualitative study.

In the context of rising food costs, low-income consumers are likely to lack financial access to a sustainable diet primarily composed of healthy plant-based food. To promote a change towards more sustainable food habits, vouchers for fruit, vegetables and legumes redeemable in supermarkets have been experimented in the urban area of Dijon (France). The objective of the study was to explore the acceptability of the intervention and the effects of the vouchers on food choices through participants' perceptions. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-seven participants

Zinc deficiency in man: its origins and effects.

The occurrence of zinc deficiency in man remained unsuspected until the 1960s. Since then, however, our understanding of the clinical importance of human zinc deficiency has grown rapidly. Zinc depletion has been demonstrated or suggested to be responsible for a variety of clinical features, ranging from minor aberrations of normal growth patterns and subtle impairments of taste perception to life-threatening disease states. The latter have been observed most frequently as a result of an inherited defect in zinc absorption and from feeding intravenously without adding zinc to the infusates. No

Clinical evoked potentials in neurology: a review of techniques and indications.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are a powerful and cost-effective tool for evaluating the integrity and function of the central nervous system. Although imaging techniques, such as MRI, have recently become increasingly important in the diagnosis of neurological diseases, over the past 30 years, many neurologists have continued to employ EPs in specific clinical applications. This review presents an overview of the recent evolution of 'classical' clinical applications of EPs in terms of early diagnosis and disease monitoring and is an extension of a previous review published in this journal in 2005 by

Disgust and Huntington's disease.

The disproportionate impairment for the recognition of facial expressions of disgust in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) forms a double dissociation with the impaired recognition of fear that has been reported in amygdala patients. The dissociation has generated discussion regarding the potential existence of neural substrates dedicated to the recognition of facial signals of specific emotions. The aim of this study was to establish whether the impairment for disgust in HD was restricted solely to the domain of facial perception, or whether HD patients also demonstrate impairment in oth

The influence of opioid dependence on salt consumption and related psychological parameters in mice and humans.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of dietary salt (NaCl) is controlled by neuronal pathways that are modulated by endogenous opioid signalling. The latter is disrupted by chronic use of exogenous opioid receptor agonists, such as morphine. Therefore, opioid dependence may influence salt consumption, which we investigated in two complimentary studies in humans and mice. METHODS: Human study: three groups were recruited: i. Individuals who are currently opioid dependent and receiving opioid substitution treatment (OST); ii. Previously opioid dependent individuals, who are currently abstinent, and; ii

Pain and the Brain: A Systematic Review of Methods, EEG Biomarkers, Limitations, and Future Directions.

Background: Pain is prevalent in almost all populations and may often hinder visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and taste perception as it alters brain neural processing. The quantitative methods emerging to define pain and assess its effects on neural functions and perception are important. Identifying pain biomarkers is one of the initial stages in developing such models and interventions. The existing literature has explored chronic and experimentally induced pain, leveraging electroencephalograms (EEGs) to identify biomarkers and employing various qualitative and quantitative approaches
