Endocrine cells of gastric and gut mucosa are commonly thought to be present only within mucosal glands. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), leucine-enkephalin (Leu-Enk), dynorphin (Dyn), neurotensin (NT) and substance P (SP) were measured by radioimmunoassay in lung and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids of sham operated control rats and rats exposed to asbestos (5 and 10 mg, single intratracheal injections) for 3 and 6 months. Immunohistochemical studies in medullary thyroid carcinoma demonstrate the presence of C cells secreting calcitonin but also of other cells secreting other peptides or proteins. These different cells exist in the tumor as well as in metastases. These results and other reported in the literature suggest a common ultimobranchial and endodermal origin for these cells.

Five cases of nonfunctioning islet cell tumors of the pancreas are reported. There were 3 males and 2 females aged from 34 to 83 years (Average: 55.8 years). Two tumors were malignant since already metastatic, one tumor was probably malignant and two tumors were judged as benign. One patient died post-operatively. The four remaining patients are alive without recurrence after from 1.4 to 7.3 years. In 6 patients with uncomplicated gastric ulcer (GU) and 8 patients with GU complicated by acute bleeding morphohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis of apudocytes of gastric mucous membrane in the ulcer, periulcer and remote zone was carried out with detection of morphofunctional changes predicting ulcer bleeding. It is established that G- and ECL-apudocytes hyperplasia and hyperfunction in these zones have stable, irreversible nature in gastric ulcer bleeding, and are reliable prognostic criteria of this complication.
