Clinicopathological features of retroperitoneal tumours.

The clinicopathological features of 49 neoplasms in the retroperitoneum, but not arising directly from a major retroperitoneal organ, are described. Abdominal pain and a mass, urinary tract symptoms and evidence of pressure on venous channels or nerves were common modes of presentation. In 6 cases the neoplasms were found incidentally and in 4 patients removal of the retroperitoneal mass was an elective procedure during the treatment of metastatic testicular germ cell tumour. Histopathological diagnosis revealed 4 major tumour types: germ cell neoplasms, non-germ cell metastatic carcinoma, sof

Primary neoplasms of the appendix: radiologic spectrum of disease with pathologic correlation.

Although uncommon, primary appendiceal neoplasms often result in clinical symptoms that may lead to abdominal imaging. Acute appendicitis from luminal obstruction is the most common manifestation for most tumor types. Other manifestations include intussusception, a palpable mass, gastrointestinal bleeding, increasing abdominal girth (from pseudomyxoma peritonei), and secondary genitourinary complications. Asymptomatic appendiceal neoplasms may be discovered incidentally. Mucoceles from either benign or malignant mucinous neoplasms represent the majority of appendiceal tumors detected at imagin

Low Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: An Enigma for Pathologist.

Malignant mucinous neoplasms of the appendix is an infrequently encountered entity. Extra-appendiceal spread of these tumor is one of the commonest etiology of pseudomyxoma peritonei, which demands a hightened vigilance in their early diagnosis. Although low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) largely stay confined to the appendix, but they can spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei leading to an unpredictable outcome. Due to the rare occurrence of low-grade appendiceal neoplasm only tenuous and limited information is present in the medical literature. We report a case of

Simultaneous liver mucinous cystic and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the bile duct: a case report.

Cystic hepatic neoplasms are rare tumors, and are classified into two separate entities: mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the bile duct (IPMN-B). We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and jaundice due to the presence of a large hepatic multilocular cystic tumor associated with an intraductal tumor. Partial hepatectomy with resection of extrahepatic bile ducts demonstrated an intrahepatic MCN and an intraductal IPMN-B. This is the first report of the simultaneous occurrence of these two histologically distinct

A case of sebaceous carcinoma arising within a benign ovarian cystic teratoma.

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratoma, also known as dermoid cyst, is the most common germ cell tumor of the ovary. Malignant change in a component of a mature ovarian teratoma is rare, occurring in less than 2% of cases, with squamous cell carcinoma corresponding to 80% of such neoplasms. Pure sebaceous carcinoma is exceedingly rare, with only 6 reported cases thus far. CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain due to a palpable mass in the right abdomen. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound as well as computed tomography demonstrated a heterogenic tumor of the right ovary

[Functioning paraganglioma].

Pheochromocytomas and functioning paragangliomas are rare tumors arising from indifferent cells of the primitive neural crest. These tumors produce clinical symptoms (pheochromocytoma syndrome) related to catecholamine production. The pheochromocytoma syndrome, constituted by arterial hypertension, headache and sweating, is due in 80% of cases to adrenal pheochromocytomas and only in 20% of cases is due to extra-adrenal secreting paragangliomas. The diffused localization of the Paraganglion System and the common embryologic origin, can explain the occasional identification of multicentric tumo

[Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver].

Mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare benign tumours of the liver, accounting for less than 5% of all liver cysts. The exact etiology of mucinous cystic neoplasms is unclear, but female dominance and estrogen receptor positivity of ovarian type stromal cells suggest a role of hormonal factors in their development. The diagnosis is challenging as there are no specific laboratory or imaging characteristics, and the final diagnosis is often based on histological examination. A 27-year-old female patient was admitted to hospital with jaundice and abdominal pain. Laboratory results showed elevated lev

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas: A case report.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPN) is a rare exocrine tumor, accounting for <3% of all pancreatic neoplasms. SPN predominantly occurs in young females and typically presents with nonspecific clinical symptoms, including abdominal discomfort, bloating, abdominal pain and palpable abdominal masses. In certain cases, the tumor is detected incidentally during routine physical examinations. This article reports a case of SPN located in the pancreatic tail, which was initially identified during a routine health examination, subsequently diagnosed using contrast-enhanced ultrasound

Abdominal lymphadenopathy in children with AIDS.

PURPOSE: To identify conditions associated with abdominal lymphadenopathy in children with vertically-transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS: Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans were performed on 29 children over an eight-year period. The presence or absence of abdominal lymphadenopathy (> 10 mm in diameter) was prospectively evaluated at the time of CT. Clinical and histopathologic data in these children was reviewed. RESULTS: Abdominal lymphadenopathy was noted in eight (28%) children. The lymphadenopathy was isoattenuating relative to adjacent muscle in all

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver in adult patient: A report of two cases.

Primary sarcomas of the liver are unusual neoplasms developing in adults. They constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Patients usually present with an abdominal mass and abdominal pain. Case 1: A 53-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed an occupying mass in the right lobule and an intra-auricular multi-lobulated mass suggestive of a secondary deposit. Biopsy of the hepatic lesion revealed undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Despite radiotherapy and supportive measures, her overall status progressively worse

Rare cases of atraumatic splenic rupture managed conservatively in patients with myeloid neoplasms: a report of two cases and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is rare and typically attributed to underlying pathological conditions, with neoplastic diseases being the main etiologies. Traditionally, surgical intervention has been the standard approach for managing ASR in the majority of patients. However, reports on the outcomes of conservative management, especially for ASR related to myeloid neoplasms, are scarce. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we present two case reports involving ASR associated with myeloid neoplasms. The first patient, suffering from chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) harboring CBL and AS

Analysis of Pancreatic Cyst Fluid.

Pancreatic cysts are extremely common, and are identified in between 2% to 13% on abdominal imaging studies. Most pancreatic cysts are pseudocysts, serous cystic neoplasms, mucinous cystic neoplasms, or intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms. The management of pancreatic cysts depends on whether a cyst is benign, has malignant potential, or harbors high-grade dysplasia or invasive carcinoma. The diagnosis of pancreatic cysts, and assessment of risk of malignant transformation, incorporates clinical history, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoscopic ultrasound, an

[A rare cause of bleeding intestinal intussusception in adult: jejunal lipoma].

Small bowel neoplasms are usually diagnosed when patients are referred with complications such as hemorrhage or obstruction. Intestinal lipomas are the third most frequent benign tumors among all intestinal neoplasms and their definite diagnosis is usually obtained after histopathological examination of the resected specimen. A 76 year-old male patient with partial intestinal obstruction and rectal bleeding at admittance was found to have an abdominal mass on ultrasound. The density pattern of the mass at abdominal CT was supporting a jejunal lipoma leading an intussusception. Then an enterocl

Ovarian plasmacytoma: a case report.

Plasmacytomas are a rare spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms that are single localized tumours, lacking the clinical features of plasma cell myeloma with no radiographical evidence of additional plasma cell tumours. Two clinical variants of plasmacytomas can be distinguished: solitary plasmacytoma of bone and extramedullary (or extraosseous) plasmacytoma. The latter is rare, representing 1% of all plasma cell neoplasms, occurring most frequently in the upper airways. Ovarian localization is exceptional, with only a few cases being reported in the literature. We herein report a case of an ovarian

Purulent appendicular peritonitis revealing an appendiceal mucocele: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucoceles are rare entities, often discovered incidentally or presenting with chronic, nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Acute purulent peritonitis, as an initial presentation, is exceptionally uncommon. Recognizing this atypical presentation is essential, as it may reveal an underlying appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with important therapeutic and prognostic implications. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 26-year-old man with a 1-year history of intermittent abdominal pain and diarrhea who presented with an acute abdomen. Laboratory investigations showed elevat

Pancreatic involvement by plasma cell neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic involvement by plasma cell neoplasms is an extremely rare event, with only 50 cases described in the literature. They can present as a primary solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma or plasmacytoma secondary to a plasma cell myeloma. Clinical manifestations are due to the presence of a pancreatic mass usually in the pancreas head, which causes extra-biliary obstruction and abdominal pain. METHODS: Abdominal imaging including CT scan or endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration tissue sampling is essential for the initial diagnostic procedure. However, immunohist
