An 82-year-old man with a prosthetic aortic valve and multimicrobial bacteremia.

The patient is an 82-year-old male with a past medical history of aortic valve replacement who presented to the emergency department after a fall. He developed atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response and non-ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, leading to hospitalization. During hospital admission, the patient complained of midline thoracic back pain, and an extensive evaluation for this complaint revealed discitis and osteomyelitis with epidural abscess near the T7 and T8 vertebrae that did not result in neurological deficits and required no surgical intervention. A total

Pre-Diagnostic Saliva Microbiota of School-Aged Children Who Developed Type 1 Diabetes or Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Altered commensal microbiota composition has been associated with pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but the causal relationship is still unclear. To search for potential pre-diagnostic biomarkers for pediatric T1D or IBD, we compared microbiota in saliva samples in a nested case-control design comprising children developing T1D (nchildren = 52) or IBD (nchildren = 21) and controls with a similar age, sex, and residential area (nchildren = 79). The pre-diagnostic saliva microbiota alpha- and beta-diversity of children who would develop T1D (nsamples

Tongue Coating Microbiota Community and Risk Effect on Gastric Cancer.

Background: Although oral hygiene and health have long been reported to be associated with increased risk of gastric cancer (GC), the direct relationship of oral microbes with the risk of GC have not been evaluated fully. We aimed to test whether tongue coating microbiome was associated with GC risk. Methods: Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene of tongue coating microbiome was used in 57 newly diagnosed gastric adenocarcinomas and 80 healthy controls. Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) was applied for multiple comparison correction. Co-abundance group (CAGs) analysis was adopted. Results: We found that highe

Unraveling the diagnostic and prognostic signatures of oral microbiota in head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer, predominantly squamous cell carcinoma, has emerged as a significant global health concern. Growing evidence has established a strong association between dysbiosis of the oral microbiota and both oral and systemic diseases. However, the association between the oral microbiota and head and neck cancer has not yet been fully described. This study aimed to investigate the distinct profiles of the oral microbiota in patients with head and neck cancer and their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for head and neck cancer. RESULTS: Comparative analyses

Identification of candidate periodontal pathogens and beneficial species by quantitative 16S clonal analysis.

Most studies of the bacterial etiology of periodontitis have used either culture-based or targeted DNA approaches, and so it is likely that pathogens remain undiscovered. The purpose of this study was to use culture-independent, quantitative analysis of biofilms associated with chronic periodontitis and periodontal health to identify pathogens and beneficial species. Samples from subjects with periodontitis and controls were analyzed using ribosomal 16S cloning and sequencing. Several genera, many of them uncultivated, were associated with periodontitis, the most numerous of which were gram po

Molecular analysis of bacterial flora associated with chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the role of microbial infection remains undefined. Bacteria have been isolated from chronically inflamed sinuses; however, their role in the chronicity of inflammation is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine whether bacteria are present in clinical samples from chronic maxillary sinusitis and to assess the diversity of the flora present. Washes and/or tissue samples from endoscopic sinus surgery on 11 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis were subjected to PCR amplification of bacterial 16S rDNA using

Oral microbiome dynamics in head and neck cancer patients undergoing oral healthcare: implications for prognosis and early diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative head and neck cancer (HNC) patients frequently experience oral microbiome dysbiosis and bad prognosis outcomes due to surgical trauma and reduced oral function, which may exacerbate symptoms and impair recovery. This study investigates how two oral mouthwash interventions—normal saline (N) and Yikou gargle (Y)—influence the oral microbiome at critical postoperative time points and explores their prognostic implications. METHODS: Eighty HNC patients scheduled for surgery (30 requiring tracheostomy) were randomized into Group N or Group Y. Saliva samples were collected

Phlebotomus duboscqi gut microbiota dynamics in the context of Leishmania infection.

INTRODUCTION: The manipulation of the gut microbiota of disease vectors has emerged as a new approach to use in the integrated control of vector-borne diseases. For this purpose, a deep knowledge of their gut microbial communities is essential. To our knowledge, to date, no study has documented the gut microbiome dynamics of Phlebotomus duboscqi sand flies over the entire time-period required for the maturation of a Leishmania infection. Here, we address this limitation. METHODS: P. duboscqi midguts were dissected both before and at different days after L. major infection and subjected to gen

Skin microbiota analysis in patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy-weight controls reveals microbial indicators of healthy weight and associations with the antimicrobial peptide psoriasin.

Anorexia nervosa (AN), a psychiatric condition defined by low body weight for age and height, is associated with numerous dermatological conditions. Yet, clinical observations report that patients with AN do not suffer from infectious skin diseases like those associated with primary malnutrition. Cell-mediated immunity appears to be amplified in AN; however, this proinflammatory state does not sufficiently explain the lower incidence of infections. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of the innate immune system protecting from pathogens and shaping the microbiota. In Drosoph

Distribution of Pathogenic Bacteria and Antimicrobial Resistance After Plastic Surgery of L-Shaped Zygomatic Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: The zygomatic bone forms the prominence of the midface and determines human facial attractiveness. A facial contour with a prominent zygoma causes a disproportion between the midface and the superior-inferior dimensions of the face. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze infections after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy. METHODS: Between January 2011 and December 2021, after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy alone or after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy combined with mandibular angle reduction, microbial strains from patients who underwent relevant surgeries were collected, identified,

Microbial Differences in Prostate Lesions Between Black and White American Men.

BACKGROUND: Ethnicity and pathological factors contribute to differences in prostate neoplasm, and this landscape could be influenced by the local microbiome. METHODS: To investigate whether prostate tissue harbors race-specific microbiota, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing of various hypervariable regions of cancer, inflammation, and non-cancer (benign) tissue from Black and White American men with prostate cancer followed by qRT-PCR for validation. All reported p-values were adjusted for false discovery rate to account for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Comparative analysis revealed ma

Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes is associated with reduced airway microbial diversity.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic airway inflammation and lung function decline. CF-related diabetes (CFRD) is the main extrapulmonary complication and it is tightly linked to an impaired lung function, but the underlying mechanisms behind these observations are incompletely understood. In the present study, we aimed to compare airway microbiome compositions between pwCF with and without CFRD. METHODS: Sputum samples from pwCF with and without CFRD were analysed for inflammatory cytokines using MesoScale assays and total bacterial load using quanti

Characterization of the oral microbiota of Kawasaki disease patients by metagenomic analysis: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile systemic vasculitis characterized by vascular inflammation. Its pathogenesis has been linked to the infiltration of IgA+ plasma cells within the respiratory tract, suggesting the upper airway may act as a potential portal of entry. However, evidence connecting respiratory infections to KD remains limited. This study aimed to explore the relationship between oral microbiota and KD development. METHODS: Oral swab samples were collected from 25 KD patients before and after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment, as well as from 25 health
